I invite all to join us in placing the Pink Ribbon page in your front window for the month of October to keep in mind the battle against Breast Cancer.
Also it wouldn't hurt to contribute to Cancer Research and say a prayer for all of our sisters who are being treated now for the disease and those who live happily after treatment and for those who have lost the battle.

Great sentiment Gracie!
I just wish that other more deadly diseases were given the same awareness that we give breast cancer. In my practice thus far I see diseases such as diabetes causing far more issues. In fact during 2007 Diabetes was listed as a cause or contributor to death in over 200K cases (http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/diabetes-statistics/) while breast cancer had around 40K in the same year http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/content/@nho/documents/document/bcfffinalpdf.pdf). And these are only the deaths! The amount of morbidity caused by diabetes is astounding and dwarfs that of breast cancer.
But that's just my rant for the silent majority. I do support the breast cancer foundation and have great empathy for those families that have been afflicted and those that continue to live with the aftermath of this and other horrible cancers.

Russ, You are so right that not every illness get's enough funding to wipe them out. I would never argue that. However, just a little history about the breast cancer funding.
Breast cancer was a major killer of women for years and very little funding went to the cure. We were losing our mothers, sisters, aunts and friends and watching funds go to so many other diseases and and very little going to Breast Cancer awareness and the cure. This is the one month we women and the men who support us pull together to make people aware. The reason so many women are living now is because they are aware.
That being said, November is diabetes awareness month. Why don't you call the paper and see if they will do the same thing for diabetes in November and maybe even have a benefit for the disease in TV.
We can post information on TOTV to make people aware so they can recognize it early and get help before it becomes a major problem. Diabetes is another disease that because people aren't aware of all the options and health issues, they become ill and die.
I'm sure there are a lot of people who would get behind you to help make it happen.
I know I would.

Graci, unfortunatly there have been no cures found for anything, with all the research going on since Polio. So they want you to believe. I believe that they have cures for many things but the drug companies don't make money on cures only treatment. There is now a blood test that will show 1 molecule of breast cancer and colon cancer. All the testing has been completed and it is sitting in the FDA for approval. I have known about that for about 1 year already and I don't know what they are waiting for. I hope it's not the ecconomics of causing the technicians and xray machine companies to downsize. This blood test will help catching the cancers very early giving you a much better chance of survival or radical sugeries. Another plus is not having to go through the mamograms or colonoscopies anymore. A Dr in the Cleveland Clinic (Ohio) has developed a vaccine to prevent breast cancer that looks very promising but it has to go through all the FDA studies which will take about 10 to 12 years. At least there is some hope for the future. Keep the faith.

You're right. Nothing will happen unless we make it happen. I try to be a personal advocate for Diabetes since I see it's devastating effects every day that I work.

GTTPF, you seem to be very knowledgeable about this subject. I remember reading a few months back, it was believed a doctor (I believe in Canada) found a cure for Cancer AND Aids. I read that it wouldn't even start to be tested for a few years to even be thought to be put on the market.
Do you know anything about this?

Having worked in the field of oncology for decades, I am so grateful for the advances in treatment through the years. I can actually remember the days when the patient was the last to know the cancer diagnosis because the family thought it was an evil thing to have....and maybe it was "contagious"! Treatment in those days was minimal and surgery was brutal. That was back in the 50's when I was a nurse's aide working after school and weekends. I digress.
There have been many advances in many diseases....and, yes, we have a long way to go.
Show that pink ribbon! I for one am so very grateful for my many breast cancer survivor friends.
BRING ON THE PINK!

Angiefox, I have not heard of that particular one, not to say it isn't true. There many so strains of cancer and I believe that they have cures for some of them not all, that they haven't or won't release. Just take a minute and think of the all of the technology and the Billions of dollars annually poured into reasearch in the last 60 or so years. Unfortunatly most of the reasearch money goes to the drug companies for the reasearch. Do you seriously think that they want that to end. We have done incredible things in the last 60 years but we haven't cured greed. I'm sorry but this is one subject that really aggrivates me. I case you didn't notice. Too many people are suffering and dying needlessly. I am not ignoring the subject of diabetes as it is a huge problem and I hope that they can come up with a cure or better treatment options. I am sorry that I am not in the loop of any medical findings in that area. I believe that you should remind the paper to put in for diabetes awareness month. It's important to do so! We all have our own medical problems to deal with. I am of the opinion to learn as much as you possibly can about your condition and treatment options. Your Drs won't tell you any more than they have to. Remember the person that graduates last in his or her class is still called Doctor. I do reasearch for my problems and have gone to the best hospitals and Drs in the country and my only extra expense was transportation. Good luck to all!

I will be celebrating my 10th anniversary this month, since breast cancer surgery so I have changed my profile picture to a pink ribbon! I agree also with Russ that diabetes is a huge health problem and a real killer. I was diagnosed with it a few years ago. It isn't any fun to NOT eat what I want, but I have a few more golf games to play and a couple more grandchildren to see through high school and college. So, considering that I also have osteoporosis I'm unclear just how I will meet my end! It could be the the "Big C" will show up at my door again one day. OR, I'll eat one too many pastries or dishes of ice cream. OR, I could get up on the tee box, take a big swing and crumple right there in a pile of brittle bones! I think, given a choice, I would rather go down swinging!
Whoops, my upload of my new picture didn't work.....I'll keep trying! Got it!!

Russ, thanks for being an advocate. Do you recommend a particular organization to contribute to. American Diabetes Assoc? Diabetes Foundation? A different one?
GG, thanks too. Susan G. Komen, I know.
VillagesFlorida, bless you and your upbeat spirit!

Thank you both for the positive responses. I don't think much about being a cancer survivor. I think more about those who are battling this awful disease. I fight right along side of them in my heart. I don't think much about having diabetes. I worry more about those who are on insulin and fighting so hard to keep their disease at bay. I don't think much about my osteoporosis....UNTIL I get ready to take a big rip with the driver. That is when I DO say a little prayer for myself! In the grand scheme of things I have much to be thankful for and so little to whine and complain about. My cup is definitely half full! Gotta go put that pink ribbon in my garage window now, before Gracie gets mad at me!

Thank you, Schaumburger! I'll keep the new avatar for the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It's for all of us who have been paid a visit by this nasty cancer. I DO believe that research is helping to find new treatments and, hopefully, one of these days a cure. Had my cancer happened 25-30 years ago I might not be here today. Girls, get your mammograms every year, keep your immune system healthy, and support fund raising efforts as much as you can. Guys, we value your support but don't forget that this cancer happens to men, too. Be aware of any changes and get yourself to the doctor ASAP. Hubby dealt last year with prostate cancer and it seems to be epidemic, also. How about some real recognition of THIS cancer that seems to be affecting so many men. Maybe I will change my avatar to a blue ribbon for the month of December!

I am a 3 year survivor and counting the days to year 5 so I can get off this awful medication that is causing me so much joint pain. However, pain is definitely better then dead!

Congratulations on your 3 years as a survivor. When you talk about medication are you referring to Tamoxifen? I took it for 5 years and really didn't have any side effects from it, maybe just some thinning hair. I am sorry that you are experiencing problems with your joints, but you are right, it beats the alternative. I was actually scared to STOP taking the drug for fear my cancer would start growing somewhere else in my body. From what I understand, taking Tamoxifen any longer than 5 years has not proved to give us any additional years of survival. I wish you well and I hope you have many more years cancer-free.
