View Full Version : Golf carts passing golf carts

My golf cart goes 19-20 mph, electric. I am always having to pull over and let a cart pass because I am not going fast enough (know this because they are on my butt). What is the big hurry? Aren't we retired? I had a couple yell at me because I stopped at a tunnel exit and didn't try to beat an on-coming cart.
Is the problem just me?

"Is the problem just me?"
Yes, if you let it bother you. Been here four years and some carts will pass you. So what?

No it is not just you. Your first mistake is pulling over to let them pass. You take the risk? Let them take it....the cart path is for GOLF carts and golf cart speed.
And do remember the jerks who yell at anybody for not getting out quicker are in the minority so let us not cast an ugly shadow on the majority of us who are here to have fun in retirement. Those in a hurry have something to prove....how fast they can get to the television set or beer stube or their geritol....thank God they are the minority and unfortunately like all minority (not race!!!!) situations these days....they do get the attention.....what a pity. They don't deserve it.
Keep smiling at them. Makes them wonder what they are missing!

First of all, nobody says you have to pull over. You can make them wait until they have a clear shot around you if they choose to do so. If you pull over because you're uncomfortable, that's your choice. It's probably safer if the illegal cart behind you is making you nervous, but you don't have to.
You can only control your own actions. Just do what feels right to you and try not to stress. Eventually the speedsters will pass someone on the road with an unmarked car behind them and get a mountain of fines.
You'll just drive pass them and the Sheriff at 19 mph. Smile and wave as you do.

I’ve had carts pass me and I’ve passed carts. Don’t let it stress you out. If someone yells at you, then give them the stink-eye. You can smile and wave if you want to, but I’d give them the stink-eye. :icon_twisted:

Back in my cart loaner days I had the signal for "come on around" down pat. Most everyone waved to say thanks! I always found a nice safe staight away and turned on the turn signal, slowed down and waved 'em on. I am in no hurry...
Now my new ride....well let's just say unless I ease off the pedal NOBODY catches me now!

My cart goes 24 MPH. I use that extra kick to pass those 12 mph rentals and when the road in front of me is clear. BUT if a cart in front of me is going 18-20 mph I do not attempt to pass. If you are going the speed limit there is no reason to pull over and give way to THE BULLY DRIVER.

I spent to many years of my life being in a hurry to get to work, home, store, etc., you name it. I came here to retire and lead a leisurely lifestyle. I choose not to do the "In a Hurry Thing" anymore.

Hi
It is not unusual or illegal for a STREET LEGAL golf cart to use the cart paths. They are legally allowed to go 25 MPH. You do not have to give way to them and they should wait for a clear passing area. Just as in cars tailgating should not be done. What irks me is the ILLEGAL golf carts that have been hopped up to above the 19 MPH limits and do so without paying for tags and insurance.

The Street Legals should switch to the golf cart mode when using the golf cart paths.

Why worry about someone trying to pass your golf cart with a faster cart? There is nothing you can do about it.
On the streets, the speed limit for carts is 20mph. Let the Sheriff catch them and ticket them.
On the multi-modal trails, the Sheriff has no jurisdiction and some carts want to run at full speed. Let them do it.
Of course, if one of the carts going at 30 mph hits you, their insurance is going to pay you and then they will cancel that driver. You can also sue him for whatever he is worth, too.

It's not about who passes who....it's about safety. The number, 19mph, is not just a random number. It is what maximum speed is deemed safe for that particular type of cart. The street legals are constructed to handle speeds that normal course carts are not.

Can you point me to the data/study that shows the 19mph number is based upon safety?
Thanks

It does make a difference. I pay for tags and insurance to be able to go that extra 6 mph. Furthermore even if I were allowed to go that speed with the stock wheels (10") I would not because I do not believe they are up to that speed. My GEM car has 14" road rated high speed wheels and tires. These are some of the reasons that hopped up golf cars should be reported and ticketed. As the saying goes you need to pay to play.

No, I can't. But I have attended the Golf Cart Safety Clinic held by law enforcement. The sheriff's deputy told us and I quote, "If you are involved in an accident, the first thing we will do is check to see if you have modified your cart to go above 20 mph. If you have....you're mine!"
I took him at his word.

Please do not take this advice, since your cart goes the legal limit we need fewer lawbreakers in the villages, not more.

Sorry Dillywho... My earlier post sounded very argumentative. That wasn't my intent. But I thought there might be a study or something to support the speed limit. I understand the legal issue, but I think 19mph was pulled out of thin air. If my cart is safe going 19, I believe it's just as safe going 23 to 25. But, that's just my opinion and don't necessarily think it's safe to drive 25 everywhere. Sometimes, 19 isn't too safe. :D
No matter the limit, I'm just glad we're able to drive them the way [and where] we do.
Peace!

Excellent Point dillywho, Street Legals are designed for DOT Brakes Steering Tires Lights a Windshield with Wiper and Shoulder Belts. They are crash tested for up to the 25 MPH limit.
As a CarGuy, Automotive Technician and Instructor when I ride the trails I see what many only feel. All makes brand new out of the box set up with poor alignment issues. Camber Caster and most important Toe in or Toe out messes up their top speed, how they handle steer and stop.
We have all seen those electric/gas modified carts passing us going like scat! The passenger just a hanging on for dear life! The cart has been jacked up. Hopefully the driver isn't!
Those cool looking pimp daddie tall profile tires give MPH gains. Combine them with a slow speed Golf designed suspension geometry and we get to see those carts just a bouncing and wallowing around like Shamu the Whale in a Sea World Show.
I have not found a cart shop yet that has proper alignment equipment. No a tape measure does not count. That is probably because tire wear is a non issue for the GOLF cart industry. They figure a GOLF cart is suppose to run on grass and it's alignment geometery is set up for quick turns at SLOW speed. Grass and dirt impede the tire wear. Cement and Tar are not as kind.
Those with factory designed 25 mph street legals have better handling. The vehicle is DESIGNED for the speed. So I would rather have a 20 mph detuned street legal than a 21+ modified non street legal. Oh wait you could have that it's called a Tomberlin! -:1rotfl::thumbup:

Some carts are faster than others. Not all drivers go as fast as their carts will go. Some do. If someone wants to pass you, let them. Don't slow down or pull over for them but just let it go. Life is too short to worry about someone who wants to go faster than you do.

We are renting for now, and I am very happy with the speed our electric golf car goes, although it slows down chugging up the "hills" here in TV. But my dear husband wants a gas cart because of their better (?) speed! oh, what a dilemma

Buy two, one gas and one electric. That makes everyone happy.

"What is the big hurry? Aren't we retired? I had a couple yell at me because I stopped at a tunnel exit and didn't try to beat an on-coming cart."
There are jerks and angry people everywhere but fortunately they are the minority, especially in TV.
A couple of weekends ago, I was going to my car in the parking lot of Barnes & Noble and TGIF. A 60-ish guy with a pronounced MA or RI accent was running around the lot, literally screaming "GD this" and "F'n that" at his wife, REALLY loudly, because he could not find where he had "pahhked the F'n CAHHH". He was spewing all of the venom onto the poor, bedraggled wife diligently looking for the cahh. He was road rage on foot and the woman should have left the b*stard a long time ago.
Fortunately I have only seen one person (him) that mad and yelling in TV (pretty good odds, considering it's 85,000-plus people here).

Guess I'm a little dense, but I didn't take your post as argumentative. I just thought you were asking for backup which is ok by me. Thanks for your consideration even so. As for the 20 mph thingy, some have listed the Florida Statute in some other threads which govern the speed. (Correction, too: It was not a sheriff's deputy I quoted at the clinic, but was the Lady Lake Chief of Police. I did get the quote right and that's only because it made such an impression on me at the time.) To be honest, I think a good deal (if not most) of the safety lies with the driver of said cart regardless of the speed.
Like you, I'm just glad we have the option to drive the carts most everywhere, period. What a neat way to live!:a040:

Hi Lynn222,
I have been passed by golf carts, but have never been bothered by it. My suggestion is, don't let the other guy dictate how you drive. Drive safely and enjoy the ride and scenery.
Some people say to smile at road-ragers who yell at you. Others suggest giving the evil eye or finger. I do neither. I ignore them as if they were inconsequential, because, well... they are.

This passing issue has been a continued topic of discusiion. Yesterday on my way to the golf course carts still needed headlights. There were two guys behind me. The driver's cart headlights were hitting my mirrors and compromised my vision. so I pulled right and let them pass.
What I find is that most drivers will not pass another cart PROVIDED that cart is going between 17-19 mph.
Frankly I avoid passing at anytime on the cartpaths because they are multi-modal and I often travel before the sun is up. So I find walkers who do not wear reflective clothing or otherwise use a flashing light or something that will make you aware of their presence. Also cart drivers are blinded by headlight both from oncoming carts and cars, especially on Buena Vista
