The Tax Policy Center has just published an analysis of Herman Cain's 9-9-9 plan. This is the first such analysis that actually juxtaposes the plan with the income of real people. The Tax Policy Center is a joint venture of the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute.
Among the findings of the study...
The analysis by the Tax Policy Center concludes that more than 90% of people earning less than $37,090—the bottom 40% of earners—would see a tax increase under Mr. Cain's plan. It also estimated that those who earn $17,900 or less per year—the bottom 20%—would pay $1,854 more per year on average in U.S. sales taxes and income tax levies that many now are exempt from paying.
About half of households in the top 20% of earners, with incomes greater than $111,000, would get an average tax cut of $14,400.
The top 20% of earners would pay 51% of the federal tax burden under the Cain plan, a reduction of almost 17 percentage points. The bottom 20% would pay 3.4% of the federal tax burden, up from less than 1% now.
As much as many would like to see a new President in the White House in January, 2013, including me, there is no way it will be Herman Cain if he tries to campaign on this platform. Watch how far the GOP members of Congress who are running for re-election stay away from Cain if he continues to press forward with this plan.

You're right VK, we are too self interested to bring this country back. We might as well just give up and let our country go the way of Europe.
Solutions to bringing back business will hurt our sensibilities too much. We'll just forget about it. It's easier that way.

In 08 it was hope and change, now it is doom and gloom? Reminds me of children who don't get their own way...

One big difference, Richie and Katz. All the winning candidate needs to do is convince 51% of the voters that his ideas are best for them. My point was, Cain won't do it with this fiscal plank in his platform.

Well, he's the only one who is speaking beyond hyperbole. Something drastic needs to be done. There's no more time for half-baked ideas.
Even if just one of the candidates would campaign on the promise to drag the country back to the levels of of spending and taxation of 2007, as some have proposed in the conservative media, would be a solid plan.

No extremist right wing is going to be elected. Mr. Pizza has now fallen into that category. He is going to start going downhill real soon and you uber conservatives and those even more right wing than that will have to pull the lever for Romney. Even with that, President Obama will be the winner once again and you ubers and the rest of the right wing extremists will have another 4 years to kvetch about. Get used to it.:1rotfl:

I think Howdy Dowdy could win this election. B. Hussein Obama is going to be defeated. America will start the healing process. B. Hussein Obama has almost destroyed this Nation and we will be on the road to recovery January 20,2013 when our new Republican President will issue dozens of executive orders to steer this country back on the right track.

Love your thinking. Just keep it that way and; no worries. Just relax and sit there in your reverie.
We'll just keep about our business.

Mr Cain says it's a matter of apples and oranges. It really does not matter what he calls them, but a 9% national sales tax added to our current 6.5-7% local sales tax still adds up to a big fruit cocktail.

Sounds like you should be supporting Ron Paul.

Richie wants a 16% sales tax? Hey, good for you, bro. You can buy the next round at the watering hole. Thanks.

I might if he wasn't such a jerk (IMHO) when it comes to foreign policy; particularly his proposed abandonment of Israel and naivete about Iran .

Of course I would have more cash in my pocket to begin with, so maybe.
Cain financial advisor is reevaluating and suggesting that instead of the sales tax, that Cain switch to payroll tax, which people already have and understand. I don't know if that will suffice for revenue, but it's an idea.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/10/19/adviser-backs-away-from-cains-sales-tax-plan-as-candidate-endures-barrage/
Chris Edward of the Cato Institute thinks it would need to be 15-15-15 with the payroll tax. That's another idea. I hope people are really thinking about all this and are not just kneejerk partisan about it.

At the very least, Cain has engaged many people in actually thinking about scrapping the current tax code that is so open to corruption and punishing of economic productivity.

How about the 9 % national sales tax on everything bought new EXCEPT
anything MADE IN AMERICA. That might help with bringing jobs back to us from overseas. It would be a kind of twist on an import tax.

The 9 percent national sales tax REPLACES other taxes. Not directed to the folks who have read the 999 plan, or listened to Herman Cain discuss the 999 plan, but some of the others have just twisted about everything they can to make it fit their agendas.
The main thing about the 9% national sales tax that I like is that it flushes out the underground economy. Gang Banger want to buy a new $500 pair of sneakers with drug money, FINALLY they get in the tax base etc.
I hope Herman Cain doesn't bow to those who want him to eliminate it. It is an important part of the plan.
Herman Cain wil have my Florida Primary Vote.

I believe the point here, is that the national sales tax will NOT replace the state sales tax. Therefore, sales tax will be in the double digits for most folks. Cain does not dispute this fact....
As I remember from the most recent debate, he called his 9% ORANGES and the individual state taxes APPLES.
Maybe I misunderstood . . .

But wouldn't this encourage states to lower the sales taxes to encourage business?

NO....most of them are already bankrupt! Most [not all] are in worse shape than the federal government, in terms of spending and deficits.
Illinois can't even pay their bills now...story in the Daily Sun a few days ago...

If Herman Cain wins the nomination, it will not be because of the single platform plank of 9-9-9 taxation replacement plan. It will be because of the man of integrity that he is.
It will be because overall, he is not a liar, swindler, imposter, nor weiner.

Yes, you are right, but the Lamestream media is going to concentrate on this issue only. Of course he would be great for America. He is the polar opposite of Obama. He is honest, hardworking, has USA in his best interest, has executive experience, has no hidden agenda's etc.

Herman Cain is an interesting guy, but I doubt he will get the nomination, much less elected. His own mouth will be his undoing....electric fences, you're not rich, your problem... I know, he was joking, so he says. The joking excuse is just a little too convenient. ...and we all know, every joke has some element of truth...right?
When you're a CEO, you can say pretty much anything you want. As an elected official, it takes a bit more restraint.
Just my opinion... I like him, but no chance.

So the media can hand-pick a few phrases from Cain to defeat him and ignore all of Obama's 20 year association with the race-baiter anti-America Rev. Wright and get elected. Please.

As you know, it's all about how you say it. The words came out of Cain's mouth and he defended them... You can't tick off the voters and expect to get elected...
Like it or not, you don't hear our current President making these sorts of statements...

Or saying that the Cambridge police acted "stupidly" because they arrested his friend.
On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong
It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it.
Yea, Obama never says dumb things.

Obama will face Romney. The Christian Right may stay home.
If unemployment shows a downward trend next year, don't count Obama out. I hear that he has a billion dollar war chest.
Do you Republicans really want someone who can't do the math?
Cain is the Republican flavor of the month.

Reverend Wright is ancient history.
You're wrong on that one. Wright's legacy of "G-Damn America" lives on in his trainee, who is doing a thorough job of damning the "United" States.

How convenient. Does that make Bush ancient history and the predictable left will not pull him out of the proverbial hat?
Reverend Wright was ignored last election. Maybe he can be revived for next year?
