View Full Version : It does seem that it could have been a beastie that....
got Mom's gutter.
Today my friend visited with a resident in our neighborhood who has had gutters damaged twice by some type of canine creature. Here are two pictures of guttering that was flattened and chewed. There were also bunny remains, I won't post that picture. Mom's guttering was found in a yard across the street from her house and the person who found it said it was pretty flattened, but it was disposed of before he realized what was going on. Guttering scattered around homes near Mom's didn't show teeth holes, but the pieces weren't very large and if a bunny was inside, he'd have been out rather quickly not giving the beast time to really bite into the aluminum.
Animal control has been brought in on this and hopefully there won't be any more damage and the critter will return to the wild and live its life .
Please, remember not to feed the outdoor creatures, they can find their own food. Don't leave pet food out, not sure that a cage is even a secure enough place to leave dog or cat food.

Just... wow!
When I lived in NJ, an aluminum trash can that was near the pool to hold hoses, etc. was attacked one night by a raccoon who tore it to pieces like that gutter. If we had not seen it (we were attracted by the NOISE), we would not have believed that a raccoon could do that type of damage.

Racoons are frightening creatures. They do look cute and harmless, but they are nasty and fearless. There are some that live in areas of the golf course near our house. Cripes, now we have to add another super creature to the list of potential metal eaters.... :)

I think Blueash, who also reported his gutter missing lives in Sabal Chase. I wish he would report in on this thread.
I wonder if the raccoon or whatever was trying to get the anoles that live inside...but Pooh, did you mention a bunny?
I had been scared of snakes and alligators but now some critter that bites down spouts has me shaking in my sandals.
A guttersnipe....?
When we were teens in Columbus, Ohio some of the kids went snipe hunting but not me.:)

Alas, there was a bunny in this instance, Gracie.
It's a jungle out there...lol....and each day, we see more and more that Mother Nature can be a tough ole girl!
When I was a kid, I always wondered what the heck a snipe was...lol....now we might have a species of snipe here that lives really close ..... ;)

Wow, Pooh! That's just creepy!
Gracie, as you may know, I grew up in Cincinnati. My Dad always warned me about boys who wanted to go "snipe hunting"! I thought that was a local thing but then I also believed that the cats he told me about at bedtime, Pete and Repete, were real, too!
Anyway, Pooh that's a lot of damage for a racoon. I think it's the work of this creature:
Central Florida is home, of course, to the Walt Disney World resort and numerous other tourist attractions.
But Florida is also home to the legend of the Skunk Ape, which is the Sunshine State’s version of Bigfoot.
The hairy creature that walks upright around the Florida woods and swamps is called the Skunk Ape because of its notoriously bad odor. Folks who have reported seeing it describe the creature’s smell as a combination of a skunk, rotten eggs and cow manure. People in Florida have reported seeing or hearing the Skunk Ape for more than 200 years now. And in the past 20 years, about 75 reported sightings have been turned in
Just sayin'. Google it and read about it.

Weird! Do you think Unidentified Beasty got stuck in there somehow and was trying to get out??

Could the bunny have been running from a coyote (maybe Wiley) and jumped in the downspout for cover?

We do have them here in the Villages. One was spotted in our neighborhood last year.

Now is the time for the posse :boxing2::boxing2: I don't blame the ladies ( and ocassional gentlemen) if they are too scared. :bigbow:

It was a lot of damage and the homeowner said it was a dog like animal. Some suggested a coyote, but the homeowner says it was a wild or feral? dog and not a coyote. We'll have to see if Animal Control has success in securing the beast.
I forgot about the Skunk Ape....cripes, now we've got all sorts of man and beast running amock around here.... ;) Maybe that's what it was......LOLOL!

I don't know, but I don't think I'd want to mess with the one doing the chasing. I know aluminum is fairly soft, but goodness, that's a lot of chewing! Kind of reminds me of Jaws from the James Bond movies....maybe this creature also has stainless steel teeth!
Good golly Miss Molly!! Do gators go after gutters in the night?
I'm not sure if gators go after gutters in the night....that's all we'd need.... ;) Glad I'm not nocturnal! There's so many creatures out at night, I'm surprised there's room for humans... :)

Most likely that's what happened, especially since there were bunny remains found.
I'm sure there are coyotes in our community and the surrounding land. They find lots of food in areas human live in....sometimes trash, sometimes pet food, sometimes even the pets.

They actually are very pretty creatures, but I like to make sure I'm a very safe distance from them.
One day when we lived in CA, a rather large and well fed it appeared, coyote came walking down our street. It was in the middle of the road. A lady driving her car approached the canine and it stopped, right in the middle of the road and would not move. Our neighborhood roads were narrow and this car could not go around the coyote and it continued to stand its ground. The driver ended up backing up, turning the car around and heading back in the direction she came from. That animal was not going to move and it was a good sized creature. Wild doggie type beasts have the right of way as far as I'm concerned!

Thanks pooh.... great gutter threads, great pictures, amazing...
Now I am perplexed..... Am I more comfortable with the fact that something is out there that needs a bite so bad it chews downspouts or was I more comfortable with my previous thinking that some nut was stealing downspouts....
I know one thing, I am less comfortable leaving my kitty cats on the lanaii after dark now.....

Personally, I'm more comfortable with the nut stealing downspouts.... ;)
We've got predators swooping down from the skies (hawk did a great job of that and decided that my girlfriend's yard was its dining area), feral cats, wild dogs?, gators, possible Skunk Apes and some beast that doesn't find metal difficult to chew!!! We're going to have to set up lookout posts....:icon_wink:
Keep your kitties safe!
