There is another post about naming the three best presidents. As expected, it is starting to get ugly. How about a poll that won't be so political.

How about your three favorite groups/ singers of all time.

Mine are

The Beatles

The Eagles
Lynard Skynard

Seger's "We Got Tonight" is my second most favorite song of all time (Imagine #1) I also love the Eagles and they should have been listed with Billy Joel as #3. You may disagree with me but Glenn Fry was/ is The Eagles. Don Hendley was a main contributer but Fry was the man. But like Lennon/McCartney- Fry/Hendley were a team and needed each other to reach the next level.

Looks like Coralway is a big Beatles fan. My wife saw them twice at Shea back in 1964 and my wife and I had front row seats to see McCartney in 2002.

I went to McCartney's concert this past summer at Yankee Stadium. He did a tribute to George that had everybody tearing up.

The guy puts on a helluva show.

IMO, the world's greatest entertainer.

Well the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.
Any fool can do it,
There ain't nothin' to it.
Nobody knows how we got to the top of the hill.
But since we're on our way down,
We might as well enjoy the ride.

The secret of love is in opening up your heart.
It's okay to feel afraid,
But don't let it stand in your way, No now.
Cuz everyone knows that love is the only road.
And since we're only here for awhile,
We might as well show some style,
Give us a smile now,

(Chorus)
Isn't it a lovely ride?
Sliding down, and
Gliding down, and
Try not to try too hard.
It's just a lovely ride.

The thing about time is that time isn't really real.
It's all on your point of view,
How does it feel to you in there, and
Einstein said that you could never understand it all.
Planets spinning through space,
The smile upon your face,
Welcome to the human race,

(Chorus)

Isn't that a lovely ride,
Oh la la yes,
See me sliding down and gliding down,
Try not to try too hard,
It's just a lovely ride.

Now the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time...

I should have mentioned The Four Seasons also. They were my favorite band for a long time. Their problem they didn't adjust to the musical changes like other bands did. Bob Gaudio was an underated song writer and nothing needs to be said about Frankie Valli's voice. Saw "Jersey Boys" and enjoyed it big time.

Interesting. I have "Turn The Page" in my juke box. It was one of those double sided records. It is the flip side of "Old Time Rock N Roll". I'll give it a spin next time I play some tunes. I don't recall ever playing it.

I've heard 'Turn the Page' at least twice in the last week on the radio. He released the original studio version in 1973 on a rare early album called "Back in '72", and that version is never played. After Bob became popular he released a double live album called "Live Bullet" in 1976 and the live version of the song became a hit, and is what's on the flip-side of your '45.

If you like classic rock listen to WIND FM 95.5 from Ocala.

My favorites artist are;

The Doors w/Jim Morrison
The Beatles especially Abbey Road
Journey w/Steve Perry

I really have so many it's hard to narrow it down, I had over 4,000 albums before I moved here.

Think any three I name would be likely to change tomorrow. Top three songs, yes, but top three singers, not so sure but I'll try.

Janis definitely would be on my list for any song she did

John Mayall -- never missed him when he played in San Francisco; love Clapton, but Mayall playing the harp beats Eric out by a smidgen

John Coltrane -- his sax always gives me chills but Blue Train can bring me to tears

Tupac Shakur and Eminem -- both great wordsmiths

Number one all-time favorite song is by Meatloaf -- Paradise by the Dashboard Lights. I can listen to that song 1,000 times in a row and then ask that it be played again.

3. One of one hundred or more, changes daily.

Oldcoach Ed, I noticed you listed Hall and Oats. Maybe you've already seen it, but Daryl Hall has a website "Live from Daryl's House" where he does live video recordings with a lot of new and old artists. They do new songs and usually one or two of the H&A classics. I love the site and check it out often. Suggest you check out Episode 40 where Daryl travels to Kauai and his band plays with Todd Rundgren. If you like Hall & Oats, you probably like the "other" great Philly rock and roller, the Runt.

Impossible for me to name three because different genres elicit differrent names. Sinatra, SDavis Jr, Perry Como in one. Peter Paul and Mary, Kingston Trio, Brothers Four in another; Four Lads, Lettermen, Four Freshman in a third, etc etc etc. But sticking to the rock/pop theme, I'll go with The Beatles, The Beach Boys (can't believe no one else mentioned them yet!) and The Eagles. All three groups created songs that were not only popular, but also told great stories that related to real people. Brian Wilson was a genius at taking the typical teenage experience and putting it to music.

What you are trying to do is for me to select the 3 best kids from the 9 kids we raised! So, what I am going to do is by genre. In the Blues category, I would say Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton. In the Jazz category, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and I need to separate the singers Diane Schuur, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald. Crooners would be Frank Sinatra, Matt Monro(who I was introduced on TOTV recently) and Andy Williams. In Country category Jim Reeves, George Jones, Johnny Cash. No, no, can't do it!:sing: I am getting headache. Where to put Elvis, Pat Boone, Bing Crosby, Frank Patterson. Forgot Pavarotti. Damn:oops:

I guess you had no room on your list for "KYU SAKAMOTO". I remember his song in 1963. I tried to sing the words but couldn't do it. I have enough trouble speaking English. Why did I ever try singing a Japanese song that I had no clue to what it was about? On a serious side- He had a nice singing voice. I heard he died in a plane crash. Not sure if that is true or not.

This person was onboard JAL flight 123 in 1985 when the 747 with a bit over 500 souls perished. The details of this improper repair to the aft bulkhead of the pressurized section is documented as the cause.

BobandSandy. You are right. It was the JAL flight. Since it was two years apart, I got confused. I think though another famous star passed away on KAL flight.

Don't know why they called it a Sukiyaki Song but without that title, this song would not have become this famous. Am going to give it a try with the translation.

Let's walk with our heads up high
So that tears won't start to fall
Remembering a nice spring day
Walking alone in the evening sky

Let's walk with our heads up high
Counting the stars with the teary eyes
Remembering a nice summer day
Walking alone in the evening sky

Happiness is above the clouds
Happiness is beyond the skies

Let's walk with our heads up high
So that tears won't start to fall
Walking with our tears in our eyes
Walking alone in the evening sky

Whistling

Remembering a nice autumn day
Walking alone in the evening sky

Sadness is beyond the shadows of the stars
Sadness is beyond the shadows of the moon

Let's walk with our heads up high
So that tears won't start to fall
Remembering a nice spring day
Walking alone in the evening sky

This song was sang again aftter 3/11 Northern Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Radiation victims as they are persevering the fate which be fell them. They use the term "gaman" which literally means to persevere.

The current band is not quite as good as the originals (listening on Youtube) without the singer (Cory Wells, I think) and the drummer who had a special way of playing that I never heard before or since. He just added that extra sparkle. If you play the original song and then play their later performances side by side you can tell the difference but that might be a musician's take since we listen to all parts extra closely. I still have the leftover drumsticks he broke while playing (and he broke a lot of them) and the only one he did not break (benefits of working on stage with them). He used to toss the broken pieces out to the audience. They loved it. That was about 1969. Too bad you don't remember how good that concert was, but I understand!

I was surprised to see so many heavy metals acts listed. Being most are old folks in TV, I expected more votes for Elvis, Chuck Berry, Dion etc, even Glenn Miller. I was also surprised that The Rollong Stones were not mentioned.
At least no rappers were mentioned.

Tom, couldn't agree with you any more. Although your original post did include groups/singers, it's still amazing that most bloggers have been enamored by groups as opposed to individual singers. Maybe they should have been in split categories to include groups only and individual singers only thus giving bloggers a total of 6 choices. Also, in addition to Elvis not getting much recognition, how about a group like the Platters that seems to have escaped everyone's vote.

I almost mentioned The Platters in my previous reply. I know they (w/ Tony Williams) were a great force in the early days of rock n roll. There was no mention of Motown artist either aside from one Stevie Wonder vote.

Since this is a different day and I'm in a different mood, my 3 choices today are:

Eddie Floyd
Ray Price
The Casinos

Many won't recognize these but everyone probably knows songs they played but as recorded later by more well known artists. Can you guess the songs without Google? (Tom can't play..........he's a trivia expert!)

PS. Tomorrow I'm going to name: Blood, Sweat & Tears; Steve Winwood; and Booker T and the MG's.

CaptJohn! "Kiss me each morning for a millions years. Hold me each evening by your side. Tell me you love me for a millions years. Then if it don't work out. Then if it don't work out. Then you can tell me goodbye." Then the big B-3 solo! One of my all-time favorites! Someday we will play it together!

We saw Little Anthony and The Imperials about four years ago at Casino Rama in Orillia, Ontario. It was one of the best shows we have ever seen there! They are still all the original singers in their late 60s and have all been together since they were 17. They could sing and dance better than a lot of 20 and 30 year olds. Little Anthony hadn't lost a bit of his voice.
I wish they would come to The Savannah Center.

Something tells me the Electric Flag played at Monterey Pop Festival. Think they were a jazz/blues band. Otherwise I know little about them. And I think The Captain is pulling our legs about EF being one of his favorite bands. LOL

Very good! No joke from me. They've got organ, horns, drive, etc. Check out the album
'A Long Time Comin'.

Some of the songs were on the movie Easy Rider. Michael Bloomfield on guitar.

From youtube:
"Like Blood, Sweat, & Tears, and later Chicago, and Tower of Power, The Electric Flag, fused jazz, blues, R&B, and rock. It was one of the first groups to make use of horns. "Sittin' in Circles" composed by keyboardist, Barry Goldberg, and performed by singer and guitarist Nick Gravenites, is from A Long Time Comin' the debut album of the band. The album, released by Columbia Records in March 1968, reached #31 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart, and is currently available on CD on the Sony label."

CaptJohn, by now you may have figured out that I sang with a couple brass rock bands back in the day, and one did "Groovin' Is Easy" by the Flag. Ahhh, the memories!

Looks like Coralway is a big Beatles fan. My wife saw them twice at Shea back in 1964 and my wife and I had front row seats to see McCartney in 2002.

So jealous! I grew up three blocks away from the Beatles' first U.S. concert at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium and couldn't get a ticket. All I remember hearing from our front porch was all the screaming...

Glad to see someone mention Johnny Mercer. Are you familiar with a song called "When October Goes"? The lyrics are by Mercer, and it was set to music after his passing by Barry Manilow. It's on Manilow's "2 AM Paradise Cafe" CD, and it is hauntingly beautiful.

I'm not aware of When October Goes but, I'll look it up despite my allergy to Barry Manilow.

Mercer was great...a lyric master...just short of Cole Porter...and he could write a great melody (Somethings Gotta Give).

And in the end..who could beat...

Tom, you have to go by genre at least

Country. 1. Jim Reeves. 2. Hank Snow. 3. Marty Robbins
Easy Listening. 1. Nat King Cole. 2. Dean Martin. 3. Julie London
Folk. 1. Joan Baez. 2. Peter, Paul and Mary. 3. Kingston Trio
Blues. 1. Muddy Water. 2. John Lee Hooker. 3. Howling' Wolf
Pop. 1. Pat Boone. 2. Elvis. 3. Frank Sinatra
I give up. No way I can select even in the genre.

This thread has a life of it own. I posted the original starting post nearly a year ago. And yes, asking for three (3) favorites was ridicules. Asking for ten favorites would even difficult to choose from. We all relate from special songs in our past and as our lives change so does our taste in music. I remember in the early to mid mid 60's some of my favorite bands included, Hermins Hermits, Gary Lewis and the Playboys and Dave Clark Five. Of course, noteworthy bands like the Four Seasons, Beachboys and Rolling Stones were on the same list and of course the greatest of them all The Fab Four.

Although my music interest didn't capture me until mid 1963 I remember my first favorite songs was "Quicksand" by Martha and The Vandella's. My first record (of more than a thousand in my collection) was Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me. Shortly after my interest in music began I witnessed The British Invasion. Lucky me.

As a kid I heard lots of Big Band music as my father worshiped Glenn Miller as I did The Beatles. Although not my style I am the first to admit Glenn Miller was on a plateau of his own.

A few of my favorites from 1950's- early 1960's--- Chuck Berry, Dion, Everyly Brothers, Roy Orbison.
