Grilling in Lanai

Know I'm gonna catch a lot of flak on this one, but I was wondering if anyone grills on their lanai?. We have a stucco home with plenty of ventilation and an 8'6" ceiling height. I'm afraid the smoke would eventually stain the ceiling and or the screening.

We have friends that have lanais half as big as our house with high ceilings and they grill on their lanai...but I wouldn't grill in a small lanai.

I have been grilling in my 8 X 28 foor lanai for 4 months) I have seen no issues yet. In intend to build a platform outside eventually but for now the grill is inside.

Definitely put the grill outside the lanai. Also, keep it covered and also lift the cover every now and then just to make sure nothing has taken up residence under the cover. It is a place some snakes like to call home. Most Florida snakes are totally harmless, so if you do see one, do not freak out and try and kill it. They are very useful in catching little rodents.

is the term lanai for the birdcage? Or for the part of the outdoors area that is under roof?

I would not grill in the lanai unless you have a hood ventilator above. The smoke you see also contains grease droplets which will cling to the walls, ceiling and anything else available. If you wear eye glasses you will notice this on your lenses after you are near a grill in operation. The grease droplets are sticky and will attract dirt and dust over time.

We have a 10 x 28 screened lanai and have been grilling on it for 8 months. There are no signs of residue on the walls or ceiling yet but not saying that won't eventually happen. If and when it does, we'll clean it up and repaint if necessary.

The ceiling in the lanai is regular drywall, not "fire code board". There is no barrier in the attic to prevent a fire from destroying your house roof. We had a neighbor up north do major damage to their home grilling on there porch. With the houses being so close here, "Grill at your own and your neighbors risk"

Also if your home is vinyl siding do not use with the grill backed up to siding. It will melt and warp the siding. This was a problem found on a home I purchased. Owner had to replace about 300 square feet of siding and also had issues matching the color. Also most screen is made from some type of plastic material so be careful there as well. Grills get hot and will melt things near them.

I have my grill uncovered now for about 1 1/2 years without any ill effects. With the critters, spiders etc. down here, I would never cover one. The moisture is also an issue if covered. Mildew will form under a cover. The sun may fade the paint on a grill, but will also discourage any unwanted guests from taking up residence in it.

This is very good advice, whether you grill inside [the lanai] or outside!

I grill inside the birdcage, but not under the lanai roof. No problems, but the grill gets very hot.

I believe the law in most places is that a grill must be at least 10 feet from any wall or structure, including a roof.

How do you explane summer kitchens with BBQ's? I've seen many lanais with built in BBQ's.

Most all of the summer kitchens I have seen that was built by the villages have a vented hood with a fan installed above the grill. I am pretty sure about this as when we doubled the size of our lanai and also looked at putting in a summer kitchen the contract included the power vented hood above the grill. It might be a code issue in Florida.

A lot of the laws apply to grilling on balconies in condos or apts. Don't see much for single family residences.
