Has anyone had a binding estimate from a moving company and had the price increased after their belongings are weighed?We had a written estimate but now a binding one from a company that works with Atlas Moving, but it was made clear upfront that the price may rise once the vehicle was weighed. I don't have the figures readily available, but I believe that fee increase was about one third the estimate. We had a lot more going that we estimated. Check your paperwork. If it wasn't disclosed in writing or verbally that the price can raise after weighing, then you may have been wronged!

We had a guaranteed maximum when we moved in august. The actual bill ended up about $800 less when they weighed the load

Yes, we moved here in Sept., and we had a binding estimate. However, it wasn't done by weight. It was done by cubic feet. Meaning how much room it takes up on the moving van. By law, they're allowed to increase their estimate after everything is on the van, if it takes up more footage than they estimated. Of course you have to watch to make sure they're packing everything tight. They're allowed to go over up to 17% more than their estimate. Trish

We had quotes based on the number of boxes packed and total weight. The box number was less and the wieght less so our actual final payment was hundreds less from United

Using a moving van service can be VERY expensive. We used a pod (actually a SAM) because we knew we would be renting for three months and that wasn't cheap renting a pod for three months. We had the moving company pack the container with our best stuff and the rest we got family members help to put in a big storage unit back in Ohio. The POD arrived two hours after our new home closed and we had enough stuff to get us through until the rest came.

Sweetie flew back to Ohio because of business last week and rented a 24 foot box truck and had wonderful friends at work who helped him load all of it. (He was planning to hire guys to help him load) He drove it down here but at first it would only go 25mph on inclines. (I think he said he suspected a clogged fuel filter or air filter) (I was scared to death) Finally he got through the mountains and arrived here late Saturday night.

We couldn't hire the people to unload until he got here and we didn't know how long it would take to drive..The next day we tried to call the guys we had used before to unload but couldn't reach them on Sunday, so we started unloading what the two of us could carry. (I am just not as good at lifting and carrying as I used to be) Thinking to have the heavy stuff done when we could reach the strong mover guys but.............

Two of our brand new neighbors stopped by in their golf cart and said they would be right back and they helped...actually did MOST of the unloading which took over two hours. We kept protesting and they kept dragging stuff in.

I don't know how I can ever repay these wonderful people. This place is peopled with heros.

I would like to report that our "good" stuff in the POD (SAM) packed by the specialists did NOT get scratched or harmed or broken in anyway. And we were fortunate with the rest too.

We brought a little too much but not as much as I had feared.

If it is a quote " It should say Guaranteed.
Quotes are binding: That is what you pay unless you added items that were not listed on your price quote:

An estimate is a guess and could change. However when we moved to South Dakota years ago, we got an estimate. However we were lucky as the moving company invoiced us. They added about $2,000 to the estimate because they said it was only an estimate,. We only paid the estimate price and refused to pay the added charges. We received about three dun letters with threats of suing. Our lawyer wrote them a nasty note and we never heard from them again. Several years later I worked for Allied Van Lines as a district Manager. We gave Guaranteed quotes: Which meant the price was the price: (unless items were added or not disclosed) when we wrote up our cubing sheets during our walk through.

If it was a estimate: (this was given by phone information only) not a walk through at the house. An estimate is a good guess.

We moved from Maryland with Mayflower in July. Estimate was $3400, actual amount paid was $2850. Original scheduled delivery date was July 8th and they didn't deliver until July 24th. They refunded $2000, that's $125 a day times 16 days late. My furniture was delivered on a Sunday and I paid the driver at that time. I filed the late claim on Tuesday and the refund check was in my mail box on Friday. Total net cost of my move $850. I didn't carry insurance, they only destroyed a DVD rack which I replaced with a new one for $125 and two artificial tress which as it turns out we didn't have room for anyway.

When we moved from NY to SC we were threatened with a higher price than quoted. When I told them that I would pay to get my goods and then contact my attorney because they were in violation of federal interstate transport law they said they would "do me a favor" and charge me the original quoted price.
I believe they can increase about 10% from the quote, but there are limits on what they can do.
