Recently Carguy mentioned in a post how tired he was of hearing people say how much he will hate Florida. I have been getting the same reaction, even from family..mainly "It's tooo hot...you'll hate the heat and humidity...too many bugs...etc..etc. " Since our lifestyle visit, I have been frequently checking the temperature and comparing it to Michigan. All summer I was seeing temperatures.... here in the 90's...temps there in the 90's...high humidity both places...unable to sit outside in the evening because of the mosquitoes. Now I look at the temps...30 here..62 there....45 here...75 there...inability to sit outside here because you'll freeze you butt off...hmmm..still trying to figure out why I'll 'hate' Florida!!

Trish, I think people are telling you why THEY wouldn't like FL......but they're representing it as why YOU won't like FL. :D

Just tell them you're glad they won't like it.....that way they'll stay up north and not enjoy everything that YOU'LL be enjoying in TV!!

Bill :)

I think most of us have heard the same from both friends and family. The reason is probably simple your making the move not them. I heard it from family and now that they've been here they also want to move. Make the move you'll be happy. As for the heat my comment I don't have to shovel it.Bugs they're everywhere. Humidity we all have. Good friends and a GREAT retirement place WE HAVE IT not them!!

..I can testify......when visiting relatives and friends in OTHER places in
Florida.......THE BUGS and SKEETERS are BRUTAL......

Here IN the Villages ...the Spray trucks eliminate the bugs and Skeeters.

Take a run over to Inverness....The Skeeters WILL eat you alive.
Run over to Sebastian.....the Skeeters RUN the area.
Go fishin in any lakes Off-Campus at Sunset...Skeeters are rampant.

...however...there are some Palm Trees loaded with cockroaches, field mice and roof rats.
You can rest assured there are NO longer any Palm trees at our place.

Would NEVER live IN Florida...IF we could not live IN The Villages.
Must be a reason why 20% of Villagers moved here from other areas of Fl.

A good friend of mine asked me. "why do you want to move to Florida, it's so hot in the summer".

I replied. "what's the difference if you have to stay inside during the winter to not freeze your butt off or stay in A/C for a few hours during the summer if it gets too hot"? She then saw my point of view. Also, they were never in TV so how could they possibly know where we are coming from?

IMHO - I think some people just have to justify where they live is really good for them.

To each his/her own.

The Florida those people are thinking of might not really exist any longer. It's HOT everywhere, the humidity is higher the further south you go in Florida. We found our son's area in Sarasota to be much warmer, because of the higher humidity, than here in TV, but people still live in those areas and quite happily, too.
Mosquitoes aren't a problem in our community. It isn't that they don't exist, there just aren't all that many. There is spraying done to control the pests and it works. Homes and stores and office buildings are climate controlled. Your car has air conditioning. If it's hot, you do something indoors. In other parts of the country, it gets cold and you're indoors so here it might just be a different season.

Over time, we all adjust to our new environment....by becoming acclimated or by staying in cool buildings.
Don't listen to them....and remember there are others who might be saying something similar about where they live....it's too COLD, there are mosquitoes, it's extremely windy, there are tornadoes, etc.

Trish---as a new transplant to FL and becoming a TV FROG, let me say I have not regretted it for a minute. In fact if anything I am feeling somewhat guilty for being so deliriously happy and content while all my naysayer northern friends are still naysaying and grouchy....I think they must just be jealous that I had the courage to make the move they are afraid of......
Come on down as soon as you life circumstances say you can! My guess is you will not regret it either.

Ohhhhh the damp cold of Florida will go right thru you and you will ache and die! Right as I sit here shivering at 15 degrees with high humidity aching. In UpState NY. Of course unlike Florida with the brilliant Blue Sky and Sun I get to rejoice with Grey FUNK! outside.

Only thing NY has over Floridia is 1/3 of the worlds fresh water. Thats what 7 feet of snow a year gets ya!

Yea Trish! I gonna ban all my friends who want to come visit just for a place to stay while they go to Disney. LOL:wave:

Ummmm....could it possibly the same place Western New Yorkers.....and the other New Yaulkers are going?

And then there's the person who loves to diss anything positive I do. When the comment was made a couple days ago, "Why would you ever want to go to CENTRAL Florida....away from the ocean?". I have to compose myself....take a deep breath....smile.....and not go into the 42,000 reasons why I chose TV...in CENTRAL Florida....away from the ocean. 10,9,8, 7....maybe that second glass of vino isn't such a bad idea?!!!!

Exactly. The translation of "it's too hot...it's too buggy" is:

"I can't stand it that you don't want to share my misery. And I am gutless."

I love this reponse.

People critize things they don't understand.

It's ok. It ensures that a place for me is available. :)

Bingo 2B. Everyone has to think that they live in the best possible place or face the reality that they really don't like where they live all that much, or that they should be somewhere else. I will admit that I did not like Florida much after visiting various places in the state 3 or 4 times. Never thought I would want to live in Florida. Now I can't wait to get to the Villages (by the way, is TV in Florida?)

If you find yourself hearing that where you have chosen to live is not a good place than look jealousy right in the eye and smile.

Living happily is the best revenge.

Whenever I'm in the mood to aggravate myself, I just check the weather at The Villages. Winter temperatures are perfect; summer temps are hot but, with swimming pools seemingly around every corner and AC everywhere else,
no sweat. Don't know if I'll ever make it to TV but the weather certainly won't be a negative factor.

We were told how much we would miss the WNY fall. Well, while standing outside in my shorts and tee shirt under a very blue sky, a leaf fell off of whatever the tree is in the yard. I got out the rake and put the leaf in a lawn bag. Can't say I missed fall this year.

We heard it all before we moved too. We quickly figured out the people who were the most negative had never lived more than 50 miles from where they grew up. They simply could not fathom living "away from home".

Even on the hottest days here, it is still very pleasant outside in the mornings and evenings. I am also amazed at how quickly we adapted to the climate here. By the end of our first summer, it was only when the temps hit the upper 90s that it seemed uncomfortable to be outside for long periods of time. Up north, we considered it "shorts weather" when temps hit the low 70s. Now we wear long pants and grab a sweater before venturing out when it is that "cold". :cold:

I even get the line about Florida being too hot from people in Hotlanta, where it is often as hot or hotter than in TV on many a summer day. Sheesh.

AlbertC, welcome to TOTV. I hope you ever make it to TV. You will never regret it!

It is a choice of an active lifestyle. We are limited in Indiana due to the weather, always changing, gloomy, yucky snow, cabin fever. We are planning the really active lifestyle all year round!!!!:beer3:

It's all relative--after growing up in Miami and living th the Bahamas, Belize, and Panama, I am looking forward to the wintery weather that TV has to offer. Open windows and not running the AC 24/7 is very appealing right now.

If you found someplace in FL without flying insects you best bottle and sell it. I have lived many years in FL it is a great place to retire, but living it FL you live with the bugs I don't care how much you spray. If you think not just stand beside a lawn just after sundown you will soon be found by insects that have been here for years. I live in a city that sprays doesn't do a lot good. Move to FL and enjoy life to the fullest.

Personally I think jealousy is part of the component to these kinds of remarks! We have a couple in our family who, when we announced that we were coming here just how much we'd hate it. Summers are just awful and we surely would hate them. Well come to find out neither one of these folks had ever been to Florida. I just recently heard that they grilled my adult daughter, asking how we liked Florida....she told them we loved it as from her perspective we'd had no complaints! People are funny and will try to let the "air" out of others "balloons" just to make themselves feel better. Either this poster's acquaintances/friends either aren't in the same position (able to retire) or just plain jealous someone else is doing something they aren't.

The reason I heard that from people was because they were 1) jealous and 2) didn't want us to leave. Most everybody who were close to us wished us well. Those who bad mouthed FL will not be invited when the cold winds blow up north

I think summer is the best time here actually
