We are kinda rule oriented. Both of us firstborns and a bit anal.
When we moved the contents of our bar down here, and we have quite a collection of stuff 'cause we have folks over a lot.
We gave away any opened bottles.
We drove the closed bottles down in our car.
I don't know if we have changed or our friends have changed but the stuff we have isn't used much anymore in our social get togethers. We have the tray with the Brandy and Benedictine and the Drambuie and all of the stuff that used to be served with coffee after dinner but nobody drinks it much anymore.
We have some nice bottles of Scotch etc but I don't drink it or any alcohol anymore because of the medication I am on. (I never did it very well) Sweetie has a Martini in the evening. Helene drinks water...no lemon please.
When we offer drinks, beer or wine is usually what is chosen when guests come over and they are outrageously fun people and we laugh until we hurt but they don't drink as much as our friends did twenty years ago. AND most of our friends don't drink. They did but now they don't is what they tell us. I don't think any have stopped for religious reasons.
We serve wine with dinner to our friends but it is surprising to me how many don't drink.
Tell us what you drink and when you drink and if your habits have changed over time. AND whether you choose your friends with a mind to their drinking habits. (Some people think that non drinkers aren't much fun etc)
.
Just for the sake of talking about booze and us grown ups here in TV.
It is kinda early in the morning to start a thread like this, isn't it?

With the picture of me holding two pina-coladas taken at Cody's and of me being Irish, most people assume I am a heavey drinker. I am not. Don't touch alcohol except on rare occassions. Give me a coke and I'm happy.

OMG, it's to early to answer.
Seriously. Used to drink more hard liquor then we do now. Mostly drink wine, an occasional beer or hard drink. Fewer friends drink as well. Same as you Gracie, must be part of the times, DUI environment and health issues and exercise and being more health conscious. Like you we still have the scotch and vodka and 20 other bottles, but replacements will be few. So drinking patterns have changed for most of us.
Of course now I have to figure out how to move the 1000 bottles of wine in our wine cellar. Didn't have that problem when we were younger.

I'll drink to that!! :1rotfl:
Sandy will have a glass of wine on occasion, usually when we're out with friends. Me? I don't drink anymore. Never had a problem with drinking - just decided to quit a number of years ago. Only drank a few beers now back then so giving it up wasn't a tough thing to do.
Most of our friends don't drink much at all. Years back, we used to be friends with a couple whose lives seemed to revolve around alcohol more and more as time went on. As a result, our social agenda with them "stopped meshing"........ :D

Wife and I have been beer drinkers forever. I think we both drink less than in our younger years and considerably less when we are out and have to drive home.
I miss Yuenling cuz they don't have it in MN and I'm anxious to have my first in a month or so.

I will enjoy a wine once in awhile with dinner. Ive drank too much twice in my life and I didn't like the way it felt. Now the issue is the calories. My metabolism has slowed down. I would rather put my calories to food then drink. Coffee please with sweet n low!
But of course I will take sugar if there is no sweet n low. *wink*

Hubby doesn't drink at all. I may have a glass of red (if we're out) with pasta or steak, but that's about it. Maybe a Mexican beer with Mexican food.
I keep a few bottles of wine handy for company (and deglazing a pan)
and have used different liqueurs for special holiday cooking:
Rum when roasting pineapple
Galliano in a picnic fried chicken recipe
Vodka in pasta sauce
Baileys over ice cream (or in coffee up North when it's cold outside)
(and a few other recipes that escape me now)
But I find that's about it. More and more I enjoy a good coffee instead.

I'll have a wine glass filled with ice.......and pour wine on top.
Truth is.......I'd much rather have a frozen strawberry lemonade! :)
Why did McDonald's discontinue that drink up north? Too cold here, I guess! I have to travel down south to get that delicious drink?
Now......in my younger years........Well, we just don't want to go there! :wine:

Nothing like a nice cold beer in my view. That first gulp is always wonderful. In the evening a nice glass of Jim Beam or Southern Comfort and I'm as relaxed as could be. There used to be a cigarette with those drinks years ago, but at least I cut that out about 18 years ago.

I drink nothing stronger than pop... and pop will drink just about anything! :loco:
Seriously, I got sick as a dog on Vodka and OJ when I was a teenager and ever since I haven't had much taste for alchohol. I will have an occasional drink when out but rarely have anything at home. What little taste I had got tempered even more because I dealt with the drinking driver for a number of years and saw the affects of getting caught driving while intoxicated, saw how nasty drunks can get and heard many incidents of how alcohol affects one's life and family.
There were a few positive experience I encountered on that job, like the woman whose driver's licence I was restoring upon completion of our Drinking Driver's Program. She told me that she just got married and that the person she married was... the arresting officer! Anyway, I think that was positive? I was even told by one person that getting caught was the best thing that ever happened to him. He said he had a problem and didn't know it. But after going through the drinking driver program and treatment, he then knew how to deal with his problem.
As for smoking, like RichieLion I too quit smoking, but that was nearly 33 years ago!
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :D

We drink everyday. Mostly just one but sometimes two. Mostly Manhatten's or Martini's but some times we will get a very special burbon and have it neat.
May is for Mint Julips. Summer is for Long Island Iced Tea.
Two or three times a week we have a Kalua and cream around 9 o'clock for desert.
Nothing beats a cold beer after a round of golf on a warm day.
Have a glass of red wine when we are having some heavy red meat mayby once or twice a month.
Holiday's and special occasions call for Bloody Mary's around noon except Easter. Easter is traditional Peach Fuzzy's. A drink my Dad invented I think.
We like after dinner drinks. Cognac, Port, Cherry Bounce, a kind of brandy that we make.
Boy this list sounds bad but really it's not. We enjoy, but if we don't feel good or get busy and miss Happy Hour it's no big deal.
Both of our parents always had Happy Hour so it is a tradition, a time to sit and talk, relax and enjoy each other's company.

I've had my second cup of coffee so here goes:
If you asked me when I was younger, I would plead the fifth but I probably
drank it. :jester:
I like to think as we age, we tend to be smarter about the amount of drinking one does. Due to medications, medical problems, being health concious or just the fact that one does not like to be out of control are all contributing factors in how one drinks.
Daily, I drink water as it is the best form of liquid. It not only keeps one hydrated but allows the organs of the body to function more effectively. The body consists mostly of water. I am also health concious and go to the gym three times a week.
I like to have an ocaasional beer or two. After two, one starts going downhill.
Up to one and a half ounces of alcohol, it is a stimulant. After one and a half ounces of alcohol, it becomes a depressant. I like to have beer with pizza occasionally and certain times when I feel a certain kind of thirst. Being a mild diabetic makes me pick my chances more carefully. I don't drink on a daily basis as I am not allowed more than a drink or two per day. I also don't have a need to or want to.
I don't choose my friends because of their drinking habits but as I age, I don't like to see someone sloppy drunk. I would never drink too much in someones home as it is disrespectful. I am a cheap date so I drink water but like to have an occasional beer before a special dinner, its relaxing. My family's culture believes in having a glass or two of wine at dinner but no more than that. It is healthy for you and helps the digestive process.
I would never be accused of being an angel so please don't feel like I am preaching.
Joke - "You can tell your drunk if you are lying on the floor and you have to hold on". :jester:

Those happy hour drinks will get you in a hurry.
I was up there a few weeks ago and arrived during happy hour. Got a Gray Goose and tonic. They asked if I wanted it in one glass. Seemed like a dumb question, but I said sure. Well let me tell you after I finished that one drink, it was down hill from there. That drink went right to this place in my brain called judgement and paralyzed it. Bad news. Then a glass of wine with dinner (judgement still paralyzed) and probably something else along the way and I had way to much for one evening. So never arrive at the square until after 6:00 PM. I thought I could hold my liquor, but not the way they mix them.

It sounds like "in a glass", is bar talk for giving you two or three shots of liquor in one drink. :)
Vodka is one of those drinks that sneaks up on you. I hope you were ok.

From what I've seen, a single shot drink in the squares is usually close to a double shot. Two for one is about FOUR shots! If I order the happy hour drink I always get it in the large soda plastic glass - but that doesn't make the amount of booze less. And my teetotaler wife drives home.

We used to call a shot that bordered on two shots a generous shot but a double that contains four shots of liquor in one drink is way too generous. :)
One would have to use "cufflinks as curb feelers". :jester:
Seriously, that would put one over the .08 alcohol limit and would require a ride home.

As a freshman in high school my friend dared me to chug down a jumbo beer mug of different kinds of whiskey. I took the dare chugged it down and almost immediately went to the floor. Nature did what the hospital thought they would have to do. To this day the aroma of whiskey sickens me. I do enjoy a glass of wine with my meals but would you believe one little glass sometimes gives me a buzz. My preference....H2O

I enjoy a vodka with diet tonic or grapefruit juice in the evening. Every Thursday Steve and I go to the wine tasting and then out to dinner (a walkable distance from the tasting) with some friends. As has been said, most of our friends are not 'drinkers', maybe a couple of drinks or glasses of wine. We do have fun discovering new things though...we went to a Russian restaurant in our area and Steve was served a plum vodka from the Ukraine...he loved it. Right now there is a bottle of Ciroc Berry vodka in our freezer, it's actually made from grapes. Once in a while we make a drink with it and 7Up. I'm afraid the days of partying down are gone (altho I did enjoy the margaritas at Sumpter Landing while we were there and sipping wine on our lanai...darn, I'm getting homesick for TV :( )

It should be remembered that Alcohol is the only drug that actually effects every organ in your body. If 3 people OD'd one on crack, one on herion and one on alcohol which would the detox center watch the most closely. The answer is the alcoholic as they are the most apt to die from the overdose as all their organ can shut down .It is a serious drug. It's funny to hear someone say I don't drink heavy alcohol as I just have a beer or a glass of wine. Oop's, they are serious sources of alcohol. There is nothing wrong in being a responsible drinker who does not let his/her drinking effect their home life, drive if impaired, or allow the alcohol to effect his/her health. What was bizzare is that I read in one note a comparison of a diabetic eating a candy bar with drinking and driving. I can't believe the writer was serious but if they were that is a serious denial problem.
Coke is a drug, Meth is a drug, Oxycodin is a drug..Alcohol is a drug. It is a legal drug and should be used with the understanding the user is drugging themselves for one reason or another to escape some basic reality. There is nothing wrong with this as long as the escapee still maintains a knowledge of true reality. When they don't that is being "Drunk"..

I was an adult in my teens. At 36, I finally had a chance to become a teenager. Was kinda nice since I could legally drink and party and I did. For two years, I partied. I could out-tequila most men. After two years, I decided that was enough and quit. I became an adult again. Now, I will have an occasional drink, prefer a good beer to wine, love amaretto in my coffee.
No way would I go back to drinking the way I did in my mid-30s. For one thing, I didn't get hangovers back then. Now, two and a half glasses of wine leaves me with a headache the next day. I'd hate to imagine what several shots of tequila would do. And that may be one of the big reasons we don't drink as much as we did in the past -- our bodies can't handle it.
BTW -- I am the ultimate Cokehead. No, not the drug -- the Real Thing (Coca-Cola .. classic only, tyvm). I drink it the way most drink coffee and water. I can tell you the whether the cola is Coke, Pepsi, RC or 7-Up Cola (the usual cola in bars).

I would drink when I was younger because everyone else was. You know, get all liquored up (among other things) and party hearty, even though I hate the taste of alcohol. Now I only drink when I have to, like a sip of champagne for a toast. Who'da thunk marriage could be so liberating! My wife has an occasional glass of wine and when I feel like making her an espresso or chocolate martini.

At about 3AM, I was drunk as a skunk. I came home just in time to hear the cuckoo clock cuckoo three times. Quickly coming up with a plan, I cuckooed nine more times, hoping my wife would think it was midnight. I was very proud of myself.
The next day, my wife asked what time I got home, and I replied, "Midnight, just like I said."
She said that was good, and for some reason she said we needed a new cuckoo clock. When I asked why, she answered, "Last night when it cuckooed midnight, it cuckooed three times, said "s***," cuckooed four more times, far**d, cuckooed three times, cleared its throat, cuckooed two more times and then started giggling."

As I read the responses and consider both sides, one common view becomes clear. Non drinkers are more opinionated than drinkers.
I NEVER DRINK: Why not as drinking is OK and normal.
I DON'T LIKE THE TASTE: Not even one of the 1000's of choices? That is BS.
I seem to have more fun when I don't drink. That one is a good reason.
If you have one and then go on to get blasted, then you should not drink.
If you drink and become obnoxious, then you should not drink.
If you have a medical condition that prohibits drinking, you should not drink.
Roughly 7 - 12% of people who drink enough, long enough, will develop a degree of alcohol dependence.
All drinkers have been to parties where there is someone having a great time that does not ever have a drink. I respect that person very much.
But, we have also been to parties where there is someone sitting and sipping on a water while staring at everyone else and not saying a word. That is a little weird to me. The word party means to have a good time and not just sit there in fear or in judgment. Part of the active adult life in The Villages is the evening cocktail or the night out drinking with friends. Sorry Non-drinkers but I feel that is more normal than NEVER DRINKING.
Drink responsibly and have a good time.

Read the posts in this thread again. You will see the common agreement that too much drinking is not a good thing, but to put the responsible drinker in the same box with true drug addicts is a little far fetched.
"It is a legal drug and should be used with the understanding the user is drugging themselves for one reason or another to escape some basic reality." WOW, Seriously.
Consider that wine complements a fine dining experience. Beer with certain foods completes the pleasure of the meal. ETC. ETC. Speaking for myself, When I have a glass of chianti with pasta, I am not trying to escape reality. No offense, but that is just to big of a stretch for me buy into.

Substituting liquor for vanilla in recipes works well, I use different liquor in crepes or over ice cream, cakes etc.
By the time our house sells, I may have it all used up :-)

We enjoy certain things with certain times: coffee with breakfast or sometimes a bloody mary. We enjoy certain things at special occasions: champagne or a chocolate malt. Some of my friends drink alcohol, some don't, some drink sometimes and we'll drink together, or sometimes they might drink and we won't. I like to cook with alcohol and might be more inclined to drink then. I think I drink less than in the past, but it wasn't a conscious decision, just seemed to happen. I'm glad we're all healthy, happy and together!

As a non-drinker, I don't care if you or anyone else drinks, and don't judge people by their drinking habits. Personally, you can drink until you are drunk everyday, seven days a week, it's none of my business.
I do not like the taste of alcohol, and never have. I may not have tasted the thousands of types of alcohol, but of the many I have tried, I have not liked any of them. It's not important enough to me to go on a crusade to find the one drink I like. I am a product of the sixties and have experienced many a wild time, so I would not be so hypocritical as to condemn someone for drinking. So unless you know me, I think you calling me a bs'er is being opinionated

Me too, precisely. Well stated, Scrapple.
I think it is not just our drinking patterns that change with age. I almost never eat fried foods any more. I don't eat or drink much sweet anymore. I used to perhaps enjoy a pia colata or daquiri every once in a while, even a year or so ago. Not anymore. Likewise, I rarely reach for something sweet to eat anymore. I haven't sworn off either, just rarely care for them.
In general, I find that I prefer more healthy eating.

Three days ago we went with friends to the newly opened Bonifay and had Tanquery gin and tonic before eating there. Fish N' Chips were pretty good. Two days ago we had early dinner with friends from Virginia and had Pinot Grigio at Cane Garden. Forgot it was still happy hour, very happy. Yesterday my wife and I went back to Cane again and had Chardonnay this time. No happy hour, not happy. Today at our son's Thanksgiving I had Shrumberg's sparkling rose and a good Rutherford, Nappa Cabernet Sauvignion. Very Happy as I type this post:angel:

Interesting thread. My husband and I don't drink much at all...oh maybe a beer or a mixed drink for the holidays but we stick to the iced tea and seltzer! We do keep a few beers in the fridge in case company wants it but it usually sits for a year without touching it! So I must say, not much for the booze. Don't mind if someone has a drink or two around me but when they start getting tipsy I get uncomfortable. Don't like drunk people's actions. A glass of beer, wine or a mixed drink now and again...no problem. Myself?? Bring me an iced tea by the pool!:girlneener:

Why does my cardiologist recommend wine daily? Does he think I need it to escape...escape what?

Made a bet with myself last Feb. No booze for a year.
Do I miss it -sometimes. Do I miss the headache's and 15 extra lbs No!
Was visiting the Jack Daniels Distillery hard. YES!!!
If you are getting headaches on Jack Daniels, you drank too much. If I remember correctly, The Distillery is in a dry county.
All this talk about liquor...and from what I've read, my conclusion is that some drink because they like it, some don't drink because they don't like it. They might not like it because they don't like the taste, they don't like how it makes them feel afterwards. Me, well, I'm not a drinker, never really was....and it makes me feel, well, rotten most of the time. Every once in a while I might have a small glass of wine or some Bailey's, but I mean every once in a while.
Personally, I have no objection to drinking, though being around someone who is rip snorting drunk isn't my idea of fun.
Diet Coke please, mucho ice.

Yep Dry! But when your on the top floor and they have you gather around the dripping Single Barrel as they open the lid. WOW them are some fumes.
You can't take pictures put you can picture me hugging the barrel saying " I Love you Man! LOL
Wine :wine:gives me the headaches even one glass. Guess some of us do not deal well with the sulfates put in wine to preserve it for US code. Europe does not have the same laws.

However, sometimes it may be difficult for a person to tell when it's taking a toll on their health. My cousin was a slow steady (carefully controlled) drinker and I never saw him drunk. But he died of liver cancer at the age of 60. It came as a big surprise to him when he got the diagnosis. He had been working every day and when he found out he had cancer, he only lived another few months.
I don't drink alcohol, coffee, tea or soft drinks. I only drink water. Sometimes I'll squeeze half a lemon in a glass of water. It's good for your health!

Villages PL, I am very sorry to hear about your cousin. It is entirely possiible that his drinking had nothing to do with the development of the liver cancer.
A person very close to us died of liver cancer and it had nothing to do with drinking.
The sad part is that most drinkers don't think of what happens to the liver when they abuse drinking. They should go to the local store, buy a sponge and then put it in the sun and let it completely dry out. Then take it and squeeze it and watch as it turns into dust and falls apart to the ground. That is what happens to a drinkers liver when they abuse the consumption of alcohol. Not a pretty picture but one that should be thought about if there is an abuse of alcohol. It is the only drug that effects every organ in the body.
OK, I'm getting off the soap box but believe this has to be said. :sigh:

Very sad, liver cancer. I have seen many go through this.
Alcohol abuse is very different from social drinking. I have run substance abuse programs because I am an Executive Director of not for profit organizations. It ruins families, lives, and often the innocent. Like gambling, over eating, and so many other habitual behaviors, if things can not be done in moderation without abusing one's self or destroying everything around them, then counselling should be sought and life behaviors changed to find good health, happiness and friendships.

We don't joke about the use of alcohol as have seen the terrible results from drinking. We have experienced alcohol and drug Therapists in the family and they can better explain the life of an alcoholic and the awful impacts it has on the family life. The destruction is endless and worse yet the effect it has on the children who must endure the abuse from the alcoholic parent(s). Of the wife or husband who must endure the destruction of a family life and live a life of hell until and unless the abuser gets help from either a professional or a good rehab center. I guess you could say I am back on the soap box on this as all have seen the destruction that can come from an alcoholics who refuses to admit they have a problem and the wonderful life they have after they admit it and get help. As I have said...drinking is not a joke as the young children should view it in the proper light and not just a way to have fun. :(

Penn, I wasn't joking about people abusing alcohol,,, I was only answering the questions Gracie's asked at the beginning of this thread.
I agree many people shouldn't drink for many reasons.
And I admire the ones who choose not to for whatever their reason.
But, if I choose to have a drink or two, I don't feel like there is anything wrong in having it and enjoying it!
I also have a 60 year old cousin dying of liver cancer. Not the fault of alcohol, but the stupid doctor who told her she didn't need a colonoscopy and her colon cancer spread to her liver. Very sad...

Just curious. We are not drinkers, well, just diet coke and diet ginger ale.
When having friends over whom we know are drinkers I simply ask them to bring their preferred drinks. As a non drinker I do not feel that I should have to try to figure out what people want, then buy it and serve it. I seriously have no knowledge of types of glasses, what wine goes with what, etc...
When we go to drinkers homes , we bring our own soda or drink water.
How do other non drinkers handle those situations?

When I was a young man I was in a fraternity and abused alcohol regularly. Been there, done that, and enjoyed it at the time.
In adulthood I became a "light" drinker, but I would usually have A beer with my dinner. This continued until last April when I decided that I didn't want to waste calories on beer at dinner anymore (I have lost 50 pounds since April). I have not stopped drinking and will drink occasionally, but not on a regular basis. I bought a six pack of Kalik Gold (my favorite beer!) about a month ago but still have five left in the fridge.
My sweetie no longer drinks at all as it does not mix well with her medication.

We do not drink but do go to friends parties where alcohol is available. We
usually bring our own soda and our friends do not make anything of it and we just get a glass and ice which usually goes unnoticed.
We do not talk of the use of alcohol as a lot are just social drinkers who don't abuse it while the others will only stop when they decide it is taking a toll on their life. A couple of points are (a) the only person who knows if they are an alcoholic is the drinker and (b) they will only stop or get help when they decide to. It is up to the non drinker not to enable the person, and take care of their own life.

Liquor was part of all of our holidays and holy days. While I am alone since
my husband passed away, I still insist on having a full bar with wines available when I have company. I've not experienced any knock down drunks
in my home or family, but I have enjoyed some of the silliness that may arrive
with the looseness of a drink or two. I hope I live long enough to remember
what a full bar means...including the olives and the onions...AND the horses ovaries!

There are those who can drink moderately all of their lives and never become addicted to alcohol.
From what I have read some people are born with addictive personalities and those folks are usually very fragile and sensitive and need a buffer against the common stresses of the world. Their neurological system is probably genetically preordained to become addicted to alcohol.
Being from a European family, liquor was considered to be part of the good life and we were taught which glasses should be used for which kind of wine and drink. It was the culture of our family and the community they moved in. We were given a small glass of wine to drink at feasts and big occasions younger than the legal age to drink. When we went away to college, it seems that the people who overused alcohol the most were the kids who didn't have it served at home
People from different backgrounds and different experiences and even different religions view alcohol use differently.
The mark of an alcoholic is denial. I have seen many sad situations over the years when people are addicted to alcohol. The family suffers horribly.
I don't drink at all anymore. We have a full bar for our guests.

Great post Gracie.
We were assigned to Europe in The Netherlands when our oldest son was a teenager and attending and graduating High School there from an International School.
What I liked was that kids were permitted to purchase beer or wine at age 16 but were NOT allowed to drive until age 18. In addition it was very common for kids to be included in the glass of wine at dinner at restaurants. I like to think that our son had "been there done that" with alcohol by the time he went to the USA to attend college and was able to concentrate a bit more on studies. The downside for him: He was the only kid in Freshman orientation that did not have a drivers license. Needless to say he quickly got one.
We drink wine with our dinners as we find it adds to the flavor and enjoyment of the meal.

As the old saying goes it has to be noon somewhere. All I can say is I love my wine. Forty years ago it was Ripple, MD 20/20 or Boonesfarm. Geeze I'm glad those days are over. Lol !
Now, its all about moderation and I still love wine. As I'm growing older I find myself drinking less and sometimes wonder will I have the desire to drink when I'm in my 60's or 70's. I sure hope so because I do love the peaceful, relaxing effect wine gives me. Maybe, just maybe I'll get that same feeling from growing older without wine? Peaceful and stress free naturally! Only time will tell!

I can tell you this: As you age into your 60s and 70s, a lesser amount of wine will still have the same relaxing effect. So, if you can stay awake you'll feel just as calm and peaceful with half a glass of Merlot as you did with 2 glasses of Boone Country LOL.

My 98 year old uncle had a glass of wine the last time we had dinner.
Some things don't change so enjoy. :)

Some interesting facts regarding alcohol. Genetics are responsible for about half of the alcoholics and enviorement is the other 50%. If you stop for a few years and then pick up, your body (e.g. liver, etc.) acts just as though you never stopped. it is not like smoking where after a few years the lungs actually start turning back to pink. Alcohol has the same effects on the body as embalming fluids. The chemical reactions are the same. No one can stop an alcoholic from drinking..Only the alcoholic can decide to stop. The non alcoholic can only take care of themselves. It is nonsense to say I only drink wine or beer. I don't drink hard liquor. They are all based on alcohol.
Only drinking on weekends is known as potential "binge drinking" depending upon how much is drunk on weekends. If an employee has a practice of calling in on Monday's it is a strong possibility they have a drug or drinking problem and should be pursued. Alcohol is the only drug that effects all of the organs in the body, not just the liver. The alcoholic is much more apt to die from overdrinking than a user who overdoses on herion or cocaine.
Unfortunately, many spouses become codependent with an acloholic and find it much harder to disengage from them and live their own lives.
These are just some of the facts about alcohol and may want to be considered when drinking. As pointed out, of course there are some who live to a very old age and take that drink everyday. There are many more that don't make it to that age because of the effect of the drink on their system.
I also had a grandfather who lived to be over a 100, was healthy every day
and only complained and died a few days later. He never had a drink and would not tolerate it on his farm.

I think a lot of people don't understand that a beer, a glass of wine, a shot of whickey or a cocktail all contain the same amount of alcohol.

Sorry, I have to agree that we disagree.
On google, one 12-ounce beer has about the same amount of alcohol as one 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5-ounce shot of liquor.
If I remember correctly at the last defensive driving course I went to, a wine cooler had more alcohol in it than any of the above mentioned drinks. Go Figure???????
Just sayin............
BTW - I went to the driving course to get a 10% reduction on my car insurance. :)

Every now and then, I become convinced that folks who post here on TOTV are imbibing even as they write! :bigbow:
I still love the story about the near-alcoholic who wondered why he couldn't seem to lay on the proper "buzz?"
A knowledgeable counselor told him, "You've been drinking too much for so many years that no one can remember who's the drunk and who's the alcoholic!"
Ah, the joys of alcohol! :bigbow:

My wife rarely drinks and if she does it usually consists of one drink Her parents were heavy drinkers and turned her off to it. I grew up in upstate NY where the bars open at 8 AM and close at 2 AM. Drinking was the social thing to do. When I lived up there, I would go to work, go to the YMCA to workout then hit the bar for a couple of beers and head home where I might have a couple more before bed. I moved to NC 19 years ago and that was a culture shock. About half the counties were dry and there were very few bars to go to. Most people here would go to work and then home. There was no crowd to head out for a drink on a Friday night after work. Things have gradually changed since then but NC is not and I don't think ever will be like upstate NY. I personally drink beer and mostly either craft beers or imports. If I am out in the summer mowing the lawn or something I might drink Miller Lite because it is like water. I also have quite a collection of alcohol in my bar and it is very rare that anyone wants to drink it when they come over. When I do go out I only usually drink, at the most, 3 beers because of the drunk driving laws. Now, if I take my wife with me, I might drink more since she doesn't drink at all and she can drive me home !

Of course MeMason it is not up to me or for that fact anyone to tell you how you should conduct your life and what you drink or stick in your arm or smoke. The only one that can make that decision is the person who drinks, sticks things in their arm or smoke crack or use meth. Hopefully the ones who may be effected by the other person(s) action will be educated enough to take care of themselve and not in any way enable the other person. :ohdear:
