While looking through the pre-built new homes, I see some that I like except they have all tile. I'm hoping to get some wood or carpeting. Is it a problem to carpet over ceramic? Logic tells me it shouldn't be, after all, homes that are built on slabs have carpet..still, I'm curious if it's different to carpet over the tile.

the issue will be lack of "flatness". The carpet will settle and form around the shape of the tile and all the grout lines. The type of pad could make the difference.

Oh, my gosh, Trish, in Florida, tile is the way to go. It is so easy to care for! It doesn't wear out! Bad thing, the hardness takes getting used to so I don't go barefooted on it. No worry when you have a party or spill anything. Love mine.

I have been changing over to wood and tile in my home up north and chose all tile in my home in TV (on the diagonal). I would rather put out area rugs (you can get them as large as your room) and be able to change them at whim to change the look of the room.
That being said, I don't think carpet would settle in the grout. If you can put area rugs over it and it does fine, I would think the carpet would as well... But to be honest, I don't know.

Trish, I too like carpet. I've lived with tile in Florida and had trouble with my feet and legs. I love the feel of carpeting. In our current home we have light beige carpeting and it's stain resistant. Since we have a pet we do get upsets and spills but they come right out. We have the carpets professionally cleaned every few months. Our kitchen and baths have tile and I struggle with keeping the grout clean even though it was treated. I have heard of wood being installed over tile. Good Luck.

We asked that question when buying because we do not like all tile. We were told you cannot place carpeting over tile.

Trish,
I'm with you and Duffysmom. I love the look of tile, but for home, prefer the comfort of walking on carpet. It feels better on my feet and back.
My first thought about putting carpet over tile though was what BTK said, that lack of flatness could be an issue, if not immediately, perhaps over time. However, if you Google, "carpeting over tile floor?" a number of sites provide suggestions and advice on how it can be done successfully. Good luck!

Well, it's possible but problematic. One thing is the tile would need to be busted up along the walls to install the tack strip for stretching the carpet. If grout lines are a problem they could be filled in with a floor leveler material but that might make the tile unusable in the future. The full room carpet/rug would be the easier way to go.

You can, however, place thick, decorative area rugs with padding over the tile in living room and dining areas to make them more inviting and comfortable.
Tile throughout can look/feel very austere and institutional.
Talk with Floormasters north of Wildwood on 301. They do new-build flooring installations for the Villages, by the dozens, using every possible type of material available.
They also clearly dispel some of the myths people tell each other about what you can and "cannot" have in FL. They do these jobs all day long, every day. They will advise you well in getting what YOU believe looks and feels best in your home.

I have Plantar Fasclitis left foot. Miserable pain! Did not know hard floors make it mad?

A quality carpet pad will eliminate any irregularities in the floor surface. Of more concern is the swing of the doors which may need to be shaved on the bottoms since the carpet may be higher than the bottom of the doors. I would recommend removing the tile. Most flooring contractor have equipment that can do it.

We have tile in all but our bedrooms and want to tile the three bedrooms. Carpet provides better sound proofing and his softer on the feet bu inevitably result in wear patterns that make the carpet look dirty. Area rugs are the way to go and also can be turned periodically to reduce wear time.

I would consider building/buying a home that has the carpet like you want. Tile is an upgrade, so you would end up buying the upgrade to either have it torn up, or carpet over it. It would be so much less expensive to just get a home with the carpet in the first place.

Personally I love my carpet. After my beloved dog Bart passed away, I replaced the carpet with a deep pile carpet. It feels great to walk barefoot around the house.

Tile is a BIG upgrade here in Florida.....carpet can get really worn really fast with the humidity and sand. Tile is so easy to keep clean, and you can always throw down a room size carpet.
