The thing I hate most about TV is the censorship. They censor the news you read, the movies you see, the books you read, the rallys you can attend, etc. Be forewarned if contemplating moving here, living in TV is like attending Liberty University.

Ok...really not getting that. Are you not allowed to leave The Villages??? Are there no other theaters or bookstores, can you not subscribe to any other newspapers? Does the local Target only carry books approved by TV? Does the local cable channel refuse to show any national newscasts?? Once you enter the gates, are you prohibited from leaving??? Maybe the overall attitude of TV is conservative but for pete's sake...we're talking about a neighborhood here...a neighborhood that you chose to live in...it's not a walled city.

I enjoy listening/reading all sides of the forum, then making an "informed" choice and, for me that choice includes a little of this and a little of that. I plan to live in The Villages, and very much look forward to it, but certainly don't see anything wrong with wanting to have more then one view presented. Why should anyone have to go outside The Villages to get their intellectual stimulation? With a population of over 80,000 people certain there has to be another point of view.

I guess, I just don't fit a mold. But... it is what it is.

As long as you realize before you move here that you will have to travel 30 to 50 miles to see a movie of your choice. Or that you will be forcibly removed by the sheriff for attending a public event with the Florida governor if you are of the wrong political persuasion. A sheriff, who supposedly is a public servant paid by all the people. Just a heads up.

I'm a conservative but I believe in live and let live. The thing that amazes me about liberals is that they LOVE to tell everyone else how to live their lives, whether it's too much salt, smoking, fast food, etc. etc. But when they're a minority member in a mostly conservative population, they are the first to complain about being uncomfortable. If they're not happy in TV, please move back to Chicago, NYC or Philly.

janmcn - any movie theatre i have ever patronized always selected the movie[s] that was/were being shown. this is the same for the movie theatre in the town where i grew up to the towns i lived in and to the towns where i vacation.

where do you go that you can see the movie of your choice? i only get to do that at a video store or netflix or my comcast on demand. and even with those resources, i am limited to the movies that are available from those providers. would love to know where you have selection and availability.

am sure someone will correct me if i am wrong - but haven't there been meetings in the villages for the marion or sumter county democratic clubs?

Oh, now I know what your post is about. All that other exaggeration kind of bluurred the real reason for your gripe.

I think you are free to move about and just like a true liberal, you jumped into something before you know what it is then work it out later. Sounds like Pelosi, "Lets vote on the bill so we can see what's in it" or something real close to that.

I don't live there yet. I hpoe to some day soon. I visit there and my parents live there and are both Obama lovers and they love it there.

I guess if you went there to be in a political camp, you are in the wrong camp but I don't think that that is what TV is about.
Enjoy, it is just politics.

I can understand someone who is not in the "right wing" camp being uncomfortable with the politics of the developer, but it is their shop and they can display the merchandise they want. With all due respect, it is not a police state and you have freedom to go as you please.

political leanings (again)? Censorship, no choice for movies and what ever else was included in this negative, baiting post.

There are no more "restrictions" here than in any other city one would/could choose.

Did you check out the political leanings of where ever it is you live now?

Smells like chum to me!!

Do you know what the definition of a conservative is?

A liberal that was mugged the night before.

As the impacts of Obamacare, the debt, high unemployment, taxes, loss of personal freedom and more uninvited government intrusion in our lives continue to increase ....I suspect there will be more conversions.....just like the liberal that was mugged the night before......especially in the Villages.

janmcn: All we have are our opinions. I happen to agree with you on censorship in TV. However where we differ is in the application thereof. TV will do anything to keep bad publicity away from it so it can continue to market itself as "shangri-la. The developer virtually has control of the media, county commissioners, police ,etc in one manner or another. The Developer's control in some areas is stealth for obvious reasons. The Developer funds the VHA, owns all media outlets and has ownership or a piece of every company/agency connected with TV. Although no one will admit it he has greatly weakened the POA. He also, through his power and influence placed his people in leadership roles in the water utility, VHA, et. He has Sumter county locked up and makes commission directly or indirectly on just about every transaction made by residents

Ask anyone to tell you the last time the Daily Sun, Villages radio or TV or the Village voice ever was critical of the Developer. In contrast ask them how often these same entities have flattered the Developer's acumen and are a part of the Developer's marketing empire.

People are impressed with The Villages while I am impressed in how the Developer has impressed so many residents with The Village. This is like watching "The Truman Show." The Villages is impressive. However the Developer's business dealings are not because in a manner of speaking it appears to be a monopoly

Once again disagreement is not disloyality. Just because I view the Developer in a different light doesn't make me a negative person. Its just my view and one I am so entitled

This statement is totally, 100% false, ludicrous, inane and off the charts untrue, with absolutely no fear of contradiction.

I have lived in The Villages a little over 11 years now, and can state unequivocally, with 1000% of confidence....

NOBODY is censored in The Villages in what we say, do, think or see.

Nobody censored the news you read.....The Villages has their own newspaper which in itself is something unique and of which we all should be proud. Want other papers...go to Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, etc and buy the New York Times, New York Daily News, or any newspaper of your choice or have them delivered to your home if you wish. We have our own radio station of which we also should be very proud and nobody is censored on that station either...it is owned by the developer...YEP..he started this place...he started the Newspaper and he started the radio station. He does NOT...repeat...DOES NOT control the news in anyway, and if you had any sense whatsoever you can see that obviously when you read it. Is it curved to report what is going on here...YEP....the developer of this place started it....put HIS MONEY into it and yep....it is slanted that way. Dont like it..tune into anything you like as it is in every other city in the USA.

Ever been to Barnes and Noble...please explain to all that you scare away with your utterly insane chatter, how anyone controls what you read....actually, all the left leaning books are out front for all to see.
Some well known folks come here for book signings. They personally know the developer and respond to invitations that benefit both parties AS WITH ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE USA

This kind of talk I have heard before here in The Villages. It has no basis in truth in anyway and anyone reading this and not living here, take note...the thread starter is one thing and one thing only...I think on the internet they are called trolls....worthless.....just complain if they feel slighted because they feel it is all about them.

This thread is pure total tripe and has NO basis in truth and...

as far as the signing by the Governor, I ask this poster to dig into the FACTS....post them and see how it shakes out...you have no idea of what you are talking about.

That anyone would even discuss such a ridiculous claim is bothersome

I dont know where you live but you better get a change of scenery and turn your life around and gather facts before you just spout off things that you know nothing about.

If you have claims where ANY of this occured post FACTS....which I know you cannot.

Good reading. I have nothing new to add to what the rational minds have already said. It's the whole half empty, half full conundrum. People see things the way they see them and it's a personality thing. Hard to change.

Censorship? I guess you call it "censorship" that the newspaper and radio broadcasts here are not full of murders, abductions, rapes, arsons, drive-by shootings, gang wars, and Occupiers doing drugs and poopin' and sleepin' in the town squares or country club patios, with rapists and criminals roaming through looking for prey.

I've never seen an owner of a newspaper publish articles about himself claiming he's corrupt or "buys" politicians. That's what the competition does. The Orlando Sentinel has no trouble publishing things critical of the developers here, and it's available online with the click of a mouse or for delivery at your door.

But then, the negative, bitter people I know wouldn't like it here either. They don't like it that other people are happy, living on their life savings and enjoying decent weather and sunshine for once in their lives. They want company in their misery. A lot of us moved away from bitter people who refuse to look at the positives around them.

Oh, come on now. This is a ridiculous posting. Yes, the Daily Sun does not report lots of the local disturbing news but you can always subscribe to the Orlando Sentinel or read it on line. The libraries have all the books you can want, rallys are on the conservative side but who cares. I don't talk politics with my golfing buddies or with my neighbors. Everyone gets along great.

Censoring the news? My television picks up all the national affiliates both liberal and conservative.

Sounds as though you just had a bad round of golf today. Practice putting and your next posts will have a more positive outlook.

I have read all of these, again. I do love it here but I don't like the one sidedness of the paper, the people who invited to speak here, the books that are pushed here. It's like people want to pretend that only their point of view is good enough for the entire community. What would be the big deal with a democratic speaker being invited? If you don't want to listen and don't believe in that point of view, then DON"T GO. I don't go to hear the speakers coming here, but I certainly don't want to censor their coming here or your right to go see them. Does it always have to be a one way street?

for those of the liberal persuasion, there is a very large group called Civil Discourse which meets on monday mornings at colony. as a Tea Party member, i tried once and intend to try again to attend as it is practically totally attended by my liberal friends and i feel it needs a little balance....i wish some of the liberal persuasion would attend a Tea Party occasionally to try to understand another point of view....by our age i guess we are pretty set in our world view and the prisms through which we view societal problems and issues...but we must communicate with each other or go down together.

I didn't attend book signing tours in the midwestern cities where we lived, regardless of their political bias, because I didn't want to stand in line for hours in the cold or whatever, and I would not do it here. As for rallies at the square, I haven't gone to those here either because of the crowds, and all these people can be seen nightly on the various 24-hour news networks. I prefer seeing them on TV because I can change the channel.

Who needs to see them in person from 2 blocks away??

As for the idea of democrat candidates being "uninvited", I think it's more like they choose not to come here because of the smaller audience and votes to be gained.

BTW, the only real "censorship" I saw here was at Market Night last year at LSL, when the local Democrat group (county?) had its booth there across from Panera, and they were LOUDLY telling passers-by "DON'T WATCH FOX NEWS.....It's ALL lies", and they had poster boards saying EVERYTHING is lies that is said by opposition newscasters. It was very childish, I thought....telling grownups over 60 years old what to read and not read.

And they had no clue as to what Lincoln said: "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". The reps at that booth were just plain nasty in their "greeting" to people walking up toward them who had not even spoken yet!

No, I would not attend a tea party function. This is based on the one time I stopped at their Spanish Springs booth on Chili Cookoff day a year ago. One of the ladies handing out pamphlets was very insistent on telling me her views of the "N" in the White House. I pulled her husband aside and advised him he should muzzle his wife. He said she speaks what she believes. if the tea partiers have that in their midst - and handing out their viewpoints - it is no place for me.

I did write an email to the Tri-County Tea Party and they assured me that was not their party line. Well, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck ...

I was not at the governor's budget signing. All I know is what I read in Florida's largest Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper, The St Petersburg Times, The Orlando Sentinel, and The Miami Herald, and watched on all the major TV networks. Go to SPTimes.com, OrlandoSentinel.com, and MiamiHerald.com to read their versions of the story. It seems strange that every major Florida newspaper and TV station got it wrong, but The Villages Daily Sun was the only one that got it correct. And you just made my point about censorship better that I could. Why doesn't TV sue these outfits for slander if their information is incorrect?

And to all the nice people that asked: I moved to TV in 2000, coming up on 12 years ago, but I am still an independent thinker. Happy Holidays to all.

Well that was just plain stupid of that group to verbally assault passerbys. Unfortunately, I am inundated with FOX news every darn morning because my husband, who is pretty darn perfect in every other way, likes it. I hate that station because I DO know what they say and fair and balanced they most definitely are not. I heard a snippet the other day when the woman talking head was saying that Obama would beat every candidate but one if the election were tomorrow and then added something along the lines of "thank goodness the election is not tomorrow." That is NOT fair and balanced. That is most decidedly a right leaning if not right falling over station.......I just take my coffee cup, go to the office and play on the computer until hubby has had his fill of that station.

I disagree that saying "love it or leave it" is intended to shut people down. When one poster asked "When are you moving?", to me it meant, "Why would you STAY in such a 'horrible' place?" And it was a question that invites a response.

The original post here from JANMCN.....as below

"The thing I hate most about TV is the censorship. They censor the news you read, the movies you see, the books you read, the rallys you can attend, etc. Be forewarned if contemplating moving here, living in TV is like attending Liberty University"[/B !

is a total fabrication with absolutely no basis in fact whatoever. This poster has offered NOT one shred of backup for such inane accusations and they are accusations. AND they cannot offer any validation for their accusations.

All the posts in the world on here will not make it anything but MADE UP...and I read a lot of jealousy in this poster. The snide comments about not leaving because nobody can think but he/she...

[B]I apologize to readers who dont live here to have to read all of this tripe

You are really a wise guy arent you ? You will get no apology from me...any apolgies should be from you to ALL Villagers and readers of this forum

You have provided NOT ONE LINK...you mention a few newspapers speaking to a minor incident...

BUT...NO LINK OR VALIDATION TO HOW YOUR NEWS IS CENSORED ????

NO LINK OR VALIDATION TO HOW THE MOVES YOU CAN SEE ARE CENSORED ???

NO LINK OR VALIDATION TO HAVE THE BOOKS YOU READ ARE CENSORED ???

NO LINK OR VALIDATION TO HOW YOU ARE CENSORED IN ANY RALLYS YOU MAY OR NOT ATTEND ?

These are the charges you fired out there.....your lack of ANY RESPONSE except a comment on one incident which it seems, in your mind, allow you to make slanderous comments about the community I live in, all of which are PATENTLY LIES...YEP...LIES. I dont use that term much but you deserve to hear them. You made things up and simply felt you somehow had the right to simply say things that are not true. Well you do not have the right to make things up about anyone

How shallow and immature can some one be.

I doubt if you will flnd anyone here who will believe you.

I hope this doesn't apply to your husband, but a study just came out last week that said Fox viewers are more misinformed than people who don't watch TV.

LOL...no, thank goodness he also reads a lot about political things on the puter.

buggyone: Now now you forget that this is Florida's Friendliest Home Town and negativity of any sort just simply doesn't exist. I know that because I have lived here for over five years and I can state unequivocally that I am 1000% certain that this incident did not occur, never could occur or ever will occur:1rotfl:

My, I seem to have hit a raw nerve with you. The original thread was "Things I hate about The Villages". I posted a few comments, which are mostly just my opinions, and I have been called every name in the book, but you just verify my opinions that there's no room for dissension in TV. I hope they post that thread again, so I can mention how the developer has swindled the residents for years. That will really get your blood pressure going. Need proof? Ask the IRS. Happy Holidays

janmcn, these things have been the law of the land in The Villages since the beginnings of the development, so you knew the rules when you moved here. Nobody took your money without your permission. You had to sign a form.

No nerve hit here.....I just happen to dislike folks who make things up and present them as facts as you did and then point out your manufactured facts to people who come here before deciding where to live...

"They censor the news you read, the movies you see, the books you read, the rallys you can attend, etc. Be forewarned if contemplating moving here, living in TV is like attending Liberty University. "

You know, you are responsible not only for your actions in life but also what you say...you just cannot make things up

I have lived here ten plus years having purchased a house from the Developer. I received a product at a price I thought was fair. I received a product I thought was well built. I received amenities and services I thought were equitable. Time has proven I made the right decision. Where have I been swindled? I do not have to purchase from Developer owned or controlled businesses, although I do as they offer products at prices I find favorable. I pay my taxes and fees and get my money's worth.

Granted, I helped make the Developer richer but I have also contributed to Microsoft, AT&T, Walmart, Publix, Comcast, etc., etc.

I am asking again in all seriousness, janmcn, where have I been swindled?

Here's one example. When I moved here in 2000, The Savannah Center had just been built by the developer for five million dollars. A few years later, The Savannah Center was sold to the residents for 25 million dollars. There was no vote about buying it or negotiations on the price. And this went on and on and on.

The proof comes from reading The Villages Daily Sun for 11plus years, the proof comes from trying to buy a book you want to read, the proof comes from wanting to see Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" or any Michael Moore movies, and the governor's budget signing rally speaks for itself, if you took the time to read the newspaper's accounts. Funny, when TV does something wrong, it's a "minor incident", but if someone criticizes TV, it's World War 3.

When I moved here in 2000, nowhere in the ad did it say check your brain at the gate. The salesperson failed to mention that. In an earlier post you accused me of being jealous. What exactly am I jealous of? Having a closed mind? Happy, happy holidays

Is that when they told you what books to read and raided all the sites for book sales so they controlled it ?

Is that when they decided what movies you could watch and began the censoring process ?

If you have an issue with the developer on the administration of this type of commmunity then address it....as it has been addressed many many times over the years (Maybe even take the class that is offered free to explain how it works),,,

BUT PLEASE DO NOT MAKE UP SUCH HARSH AND FALSE ACCUSATIONS....BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS !

Just to try and get out of this thread.....you have some serious problems.....just stop telling untruths as you continue to do...you know you can buy any book you want...why you just make up things you will have to work on......

How were you able to read and watch all this stuff if you were censored so badly? Also, I don't have much respect for the Pulitzer prize after giving one to Obama.

I wonder the same thing BK....he/she simply snipes away and has no knowledge of what she is talking about.

If you are this miserable and he/she sure sounds miserable...you cant slur folks like that with such contempt and not be miserable......move away..go to a neighboring community.

The 350 million situation she talks of is so old that if you google it, be prepared to read some very OLD news. Even the POA who has been at odds with the developer, while following it closely, has no fear of any reprecussions for residents and said so in their spring newsletter.

This person is obvious playing games with everyone because NOBODY can be so ill informed and acid tongued ~!

PS any wannabes who read here to learn about the Villages, be advised that this issue of the 350 million topic there are many threads on this subject in this forum. PLEASE whatever you do, do not allow this person concern you.

You know I dont have dog in this fight because the reality of this situation isn't going to appeciable change my situation. However, absolutes, just trip me up. Nothing is absolute other than death and most of us here are fighting that one too.

Let me begin with this reminder "We don't know what we don 't know."

Marketing people are quite remarkable when you consider for instance that they marketed cigarettes as being safe and so kool socially. Then there had been those marketing people who told you that each day should start off with a healthy breakfast of bacon and eggs....You get the point.

Marketing just the Lifestyle has been so successful here that its creators planned to market the concept offering " A How To Do It" for a very large sum concerning its secrets to "Selling The Lifestyle", to Developers around the country.

Make no mistake The Villages is a huge enterprise marketed so well that many a resident refers to it as "shangri-la" or similar references. Without kowning the "how" is there any doubt , including censorship in some form that
would prevent its creators from preserving its status and /or controlling its functions and acttivites to protect the essence of what they market the "Lifestyle" to be as you would any copyright, etc. And I might add with justification.

Finally at the risk of sounding paranoid is there an appreciable chance that The Village's creators would not hesitate to plant employees on this site? Employees whose job is to discourage or disguise discussion they deem having a negative affect on their creation and hence limit the damage? Perhaps not? Certainly the Developer is the top1% of the top 1% and could care less what little people like you and me think...but then "we don't know what we don't know"

Now I am going to leave to enjoy my neighbors and my day in The Villages.

If the house isn't marketable, I'd be willing to take it off your hands! I mean, I hate to see someone suffer so. I could even rent you a home in NW Ohio for a reasonable rate...Just let me know!
