we've been traveling to FL for the last 5 years at Christmas and have acquired 2 cats over the last 3 years... they stay in the house while we are gone for 2 weeks .. I can't bring myself to put up the tree and leave it with the cats while we're gone.. any advice?

Good decision. We also have two cats, and they don't get along with our Christmas tree.

You are doing the right thing, IMO.

Our TWO cats, Mikey, Harry and Hershey just take turns sleeping under the tree...sometimes two at a time.

Now the skaters that are gliding around on the pond in the animated Christmas village is a TERRIBLE temptation. I have to get Mikey out of that village at least once a day.

If a tree is important, have it out while you're there but put it in a spare room while you're gone or take it down before you leave. Cats shouldn't mind the closed door and you'll still have a tree. If you really don't care about having a tree up, don't bother.

Block the tree off somehow where they can't get close to it. How playful are the cats? Are they known to play around that rough to climb up the tree? Have they done it in the past? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
