Personally, I would not waste my time reading the hate items of disenchanted youths who are working at menial jobs in The Villages.

However, if one knew of the youth's employer and showed the employer the hatefilled diatribe their employee had toward the customers, I doubt if the employee would be employed much longer. These disenchanted youths usually do not realize the consequences of posting too much information on Facebook. It can turn around and bite you in the butt.

A few obsevations:

There are only 60 "likes" for the page, so we are only looking at a small number of bitter morons.

Very few of the posts are recent.

What strikes me the most is that the posters rely on ugly generalizations about old folks. It is very similar to prejudice, bigotry and the like. People who post those types of things are the same as those who claim "All blacks are..." or "All Jews are..." or even "All liberals are..." Stereotyping is the weapon of the ignorant.

Don't waste your time trying to engage these folks in a battle of wits, because your oppnents are unarmed. Ignore them...most of their posts are made when Villagers actually respond to their nonsense.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion and if you don't want to be on Facebook, I applaude you standing by your principles. For me personally, I have to respectfully disagree.

I have found FB to be an excellent way to stay in touch--it has put me in touch with friends from grammar school, junior and senior high, and college. We have a family page where siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles, and parents can stay in touch on a daily basis. FB is just a tool for communication (just like TOTV) and anything that enhances communication between friends and relatives is OK in my book.

I don't find that it adds to stress, in fact, I find it one of my more relaxing activities.

It is certainly not for everyone, and there are people who become addicted to it (just like other message boards and social media sites) and others who abuse it, but if it is used as a tool (like TOTV, cell phones, email, snail mail, etc.) it can be very beneficial.

I'm on facebook for a few reasons...no, I don't care what everyone is doing every minute of the day or if their kid has the sniffles...I use it to talk to my kids and grandkids and it really does give me insight into what is going on in their lives...they are much more open when expressing themselves (sometimes too much so!)..I have also reconnected with some great friends that I had lost contact with and I really like the stupid games (I know, I need to get a life!)

Compared to NYC, LA, San Fran????? Really! It has persisted as an urban legend wannabee, so maybe that is where these little morons got their info. Whatever! Nah, you're not the only one. I tried it for a month or two at my daughter's suggestion. I absolutely hated it. I care too much about my privacy and the privacy of my loved ones for that type of exposure and frankly I really don't care about all of life's ups and downs for people who are darn-near total strangers. My junk email ratcheted up considerably. Someone even took the time to explain why they had defriended someone. I didn't even know it was like the end of the world to be defriended. Nah, I'm into a stress-free existence now-a-days.

Oh, about the STD problem (long ago and probably greatly exaggerated) - damn that little blue pill!

I admit the wife and I both have facebook accounts. It has proven to be a great way to keep up with the daily lives of our kids and grandchild. The pictures and videos they post are wonderful to see when you live 100's of miles away.

Like anything, it is how you use it. I have become reacquainted with some wonderful friends from the past whom I do not think I'd ever hear from again if not for facebook. I have been able to share pictures, etc there. Just prior to our move down here I used a local facebook page up north to sell many items quickly and without cost.

But, I am picky about it too. My wife is even more so. I do not play their games, etc. If I hardly knew you 30 years ago I will not automatically make you my "facebook friend". I don't facebook "poke".

As to the original topic of some hateful facebook page, there are idiots everywhere. Engaging with them is foolish, as you are not going to change a closed mind. It is like swimming in quicksand. He who argues with a fool is a fool...and most all of the good folks here are to smart to be foolish....

The book was actually entitled Leisureville (I read it, and while it had some funny stories and characters, it was an excellent example of sensationalism), but the STD figures have been circulating for many years, even prior to the book. A quick Google search shows this article as early as 2006:

I have made friends, found friends and relatives, saved dogs,learned from, laughed and cried with people, because of fb. You can tell all or nothing about yourself. It's yours do do with as you wish. There is only bullying if you allow it. I delete anyone who is not nice on my wall and I have been deleted. It's not personal. It's just fb.

It's the only place where I can pick the people around me. It can be as private as you want it to be.

I forgot.... We were able to collect enough money to save a home. $12,000. She is a dog rescuer who had lost a job and by the time she got another one was losing her home. The STD "thing" came from a news article about the growing rate of STD in the elderly. A public health nurse was quoted in the article regarding a recent spike in the STD reporting in the villages. It made national news because it seemed unconventional to have a spike in STD reportings in a community of mostly retired people. The story has NEVER gone away. Anyone in the public health field knows that spikes occur in every city. The rate of reporting is constantly changing with spikes and leveling off. The article never said the the STD rate was the highest is Florida. It simply stated that the Villages had spikes in disease reporting just like any other community. Over the years the story has been embellished again and again.

I was on Facebook a while back and when I suddenly received a friend invitation from someone I didn't know, I became concerned about safety.
As a former techie who is going in the other direction, I realize I may have been too concerned. I heard that Facebook had some security concerns but they were adddressed and probabily is as safe a site as one can be. I'm sure it serves a useful function to those who use it prudently.

Although, I will admit I didn't really look into these comments made on Facebook, my general impression is that it is a sign of the times. Just as the comedy routines/shows/movies, that are more graphic and vulgar as oppossed to years ago. I am not a prude and enjoy a lot of humor.

The spewing of garbage from one's mouth reminds me of an old comment, "do you eat of the same mouth that you talk".

Facebook is nice as a communications tool, but you have to be careful about what you put on there.

What they don't realize is what a privilege it is for them to live in our beautiful county(s). We were here first. IF he is a server...Let us first believe that many have been impatient, condescending, rude and just plain mean and bossy. I feel for him. However, most of us have had our kids serve or been a server at some time in our life. That, unfortunately comes with the territory. But I have been at a few tables here where I cringed at the ordering around of the servers.

I find that most of the servers here in The Villages are the best I have ever run across. Showing no impatience for the separate checks we ask for routinely and the fill ups for tea and coffee. and the very small tips I suspect are given at times.

However. Michael Alderman who has gray at his temples will be among us in due time. Some cultures honor their seniors. I am so afraid that many in the younger generations haven't been taught to do so and many of the older generation don't behave as if they deserve it...but that all said,...

It sounds like this person is bitching about what he has to do to earn a living. My point of view is that if you don't like your job, you need to find something else or quit. The company I worked at just laid off 25% of their staff. I guess their complaints wil now take a new tact.

I agree with 2B - don't let it get to you.

I think about my 97 yo mother, who is going through advancing Alzheimers and is just not her old self anymore. I have to remind myself and those of my "baby boomer" generation that WE are NEXT !

Heard a true story on this morning's news about a guy who wanted a few days off from work. He faked his mother's obituary, without telling her. His employer found out about it, and fired him. Now he has the time off..........

Thanks Tom. I don't know why I couldn't find it, but your link took me right there.

A few obsevations:

There are only 60 "likes" for the page, so we are only looking at a small number of bitter morons.

Very few of the posts are recent.

What strikes me the most is that the posters rely on ugly generalizations about old folks. It is very similar to prejudice, bigotry and the like. People who post those types of things are the same as those who claim "All blacks are..." or "All Jews are..." or even "All liberals are..." Stereotyping is the weapon of the ignorant.

Don't waste your time trying to engage these folks in a battle of wits, because your oppnents are unarmed. Ignore them...most of their posts are made when Villagers actually respond to their nonsense.

This type of resentment is very common in areas that have experienced large influx's of people. While I certainly don't condone this persons vitriol, it is not uncommon in areas that have changed radically in a short period of time. If you live in South Florida, you will often see bumper stickers that say "Native Floridian", of "we don't care how you did it in New York". They long for a time they will never be able to get back again. I'm sure that if there was facebook in the early 1900's we would have read of resentment of Catholics, Irish, Italians, etc. Let's just let it go. Not everyone has to love us.

So I was thinking about the kids saying tv came in and destroyed their beautiful landscape. But it seems that TV has been around for much longer then they have.

Too bad they aren't thankful for the jobs it has created that the kids in my neighborhood would love to have. There are people making a lot of
money here. These kids have only lived here so they might. Ot understand the resession the rest of the US has gone though.

Facebook has a post titled "HaTE THE VILLAGES FLORIDA". Hundreds of bozo's ripping TV and its residence apart. According to their facts we are all brain dead and infersted with STD's. If any of you guys are on Facebook, help me throw it back in their faces.

Why? You can't fight ignorance and hate with facts. If they don't like TV, so what?
