I am convinced that some people living here should not be able to drive any sort of vehicle(period)
I played golf very earlier this morning and while waiting for the go ahead by the starter noticed two woman running on Canal facing traffic. A guy in a golf cart apparently didn't believe they should be running in the road and came very close to running down the runners. The exchange was in a foreign language I didn't understand but went something like #$%%^&&***(()( and you @#@$$%^%^^&.
On my way home I can't tell you the number of golf cart drivers who have no understanding that they need to slow or stop when necessary as they approach pedestrians. The law is clear the driver have the obstruction must stop to allow clearance for oncoming traffic. They don't so when I see a pedestrian on the opposite side of the cart path I slow or stop because I know the oncoming cart is going to pull in the middle of the path
After playing golf I went home to change and was off to MVP traveling on Belvedere approaching the Buena Vista gate when I looked right and saw a little yellow car attempting to drive on the golf path. He was only stopped because a golf cart driver slammed on his breaks and began drastically waving his arms. I stopped and motion the driver to back out while I waited.
As I approached the entrance to MVP a vehicle perhaps left someone out and was driving away when he just missed a woman leaving MVP. Again another exchange in a foreign language I didn't understand.
On my way home I was stopped in the left turning lane on 466 west with a green light waiting to see for oncoming cars to clear. The view was clear except for a car in the opposing left tuning lane (466 west) with a signal that he was going left. As I pulled to turn this vehicle pulled hard right and continued straight on 466 just missing me.

You are so right and the jolly shoppers who were trying to mail their Christmas stuff today at two different post offices were honking and honking and honking to get the cars to move who were stuck motionless in the line to find a parking place.
I almost got out of my car and used my squirtgun.

I can do you one better Rubicon! We were coming home from a very nice lunch at Cane Garden today when we had to stop after going through the tunnel under Buena Vista as a big white mini van was turning around (on the golf cart trail). The driver zoomed right by us (on the golf cart trail) heading to Odell where she took a left and disappeared. I thought maybe you were the guy in the oncoming golf cart that stopped and made wild gestures with his arms as she passed him! I had heard that this occasionally happened but it was the first time I had actually seen it!:ohdear:
Gracie, where did you get that water pistol? I get so tired of being "honked at", especially when I am in a jam and can't move. I wonder if these "honkers" actually think I can sprout wings and fly! Where I come from you use your horn for a warning (or perhaps an occasional "toot" when you see a friend) but not just to show impatience. IMHO it is rude and crude and just downright bad manners! For Heavens sake, we're retired! What's your hurry?

I too have held my breath more than once watching some close calls. There are many rude (and wacky) folks who have an extreme sense of entitlement here in TV. A couple of wks ago I saw a case of "road rage" in the Walmart parking lot that was just plain scary.
An older couple were pushing their shopping cart down the middle of the lane (yes, it would have been more polite to move to the side) An elderly man driving his car got frustrated with this and zoomed by, just missing them and giving them a one finger salute as he passed by (yes, he should have waited an extra 30 seconds until they got out of his way and the "salute" was uncalled for). The man who was walking with his wife, went ballastic, chased after the car and began yelling at the driver to never flip off his wife. The elderly driver stopped his car, returned the yelling with a threat that he was going to get his gun. Talk about over reacting on everyone's part. Thank goodness the driver just gunned it and drove off.

Yup, and yesterday on 466, at a stoplight near the High School, I stopped at a red light, and a few seconds later a little red car goes zooming through the red light in the middle lane. I was so glad I wasn't in the middle lane,or my van would have been his stop light.

I ask that question every day of the week. Geez...just leave sooner. I noticed today one of the new signs up on Buena Vista about the new speed limits that are coming.

Speed limit 20

On another note, how about those walkers that walk early and/or late and wear dark, dark clothes with no reflectors or lights of any kind? Ever notice, too, in heavy fog the only cars without headlights on are the dark colored ones?

Yesterday just before dusk (on a day that was cloudy and dark all day) a guy was riding a bicycle on Parr Drive behind Walgreens (no separate cart lane there). He was occupying the middle of the car lane, and was wearing a dark charcoal grey or black shirt. I could barely see him ahead of me because of the black shirt....saw him as I got fairly close.
PLEASE wear something bright colored, white or reflective when you're bicycling in the car lanes!

It is posts like this that makes me think of those unfortunate individuaks who were killed due to an error of judgement or just plain stupidity. Everyone will, make a mistake sooner or later when driving so I think it is best to watch for others mistakes as we would want them to be there for us when we make a mistake.
I for one will be more careful as I think it is sad that a pleasurable drive to somewhere could wind up in a tragedy.

Maybe someone can clear up why a person would be walking or be running in the designated cart lane along the road, when there are sidewalks that most people use to do the same thing? (I'm not saying there was a sidewalk along the part of Canal these 2 woman were running) I see this along St Charles Pl. This of course forces the cart to move into the road and car traffic in order to get around these people. Just wondering why they prefer the road to the sidewalks? I'm guessing maybe it's the old staying "Step on a crack, break your mother's back"? Perhaps same thoughts for the person Rubicon mentioned, just expressed himself incorrectly......I'm still trying to piece together that foreign language, I've seen it somewhere before.

To bad the elderly couple at the shopping center did not get the persons license plate number who threatened them by "getting his gun." In Florida that is a felony, especially if that person is a CWL holder. Upon being found guilty, 3 years and lose of 2d Amendment rights forever. Personally I don't think that is enough punishment for being stupid in a "No Stupid Zone." These are the type of people that need to be taken off the street before they give the rest of us CWL holders a bad name. You need to be a competent adult to be trusted with a firearm and this proves that this man is not. Say something like that to me and if I can get your license plate number you will be getting a visit from the local deputy and facing a civil lawsuit for violation of my civil rights by threatening me with bodily harm. It does not matter under Florida law if the firearm is displayed or not. Just thought that everyone might be able to use this information.

I think they do it because the asphalt is softer and easier on the knees than is the concrete sidewalk. But the question remains.....if walkers are in the golf cart lane, shouldn't they hop back up on the sidewalk when they see a golfcart coming??

It is a threat that can be carried out easily. How is the victim to know whether or not he has one? That is up to the police to decide and take care of. The FL statue on CWL holders is very specific on this item. If he had a CWL and even if he did not have his firearm with him, if he is found guilty in a court of law then it is bye-bye for 3 years, don't pass go, no $200. Witnesses would be the deciding factor.

Runners definitely prefer asphalt over concret. Much easier on the feet and knees. Also, I noticed during my early morning jogs that there are a lot of blind curves on the paths due to plants and bushes. I believe it is safer on the road in less congested areas.

That raises a question in my mind. Obviously the paths separate from the roadways are multi-modal and carts, bicycles, joggers, etc. should share them. Are the marked lanes along the roadways, like on Canal, also multi-modal, or are they carts only?

A poster mentioned walkers/runners (pedestrians) who exercise very earlier or very late.
I am an early riser and hence on the cart paths before sunrise. Some pedestrians wear reflective gear or have blinking lights while somewould make excellent commandos So I always travel at a lower speed.
I also agree with the poster who questioned why runners, etc are in the road or cart path lanes when sidwalks are available as it creates a hazard for drivers who have to pull around these folks when if the runner was on the sidewalk the move would be unnecessary. Canal Street does have a sidwalk
As the OP my reason was not to send out an alarm but only to remind folks to be cautious.
Finally both my wife and I always park at the back of a parking lot store to avoid have to dodge pedestrians in the parking lot

I have no problem with folks walking or jogging....but "IF" they're in the cart-path that's on the road I'd appreciate it if they'd move out of the way when a golf-cart is approaching! That kind of goes for the multi-model paths too I would think! I do slow down for these folks BUT when they appear to want to play "chicken" then I wonder who they think will 'win'. JMHO

The only time I get somewhat annoyed is when people ride their bikes side by side, or people walk 3 abreast on the multi modal paths and will not yield as carts come. IMO sharing is a two way street......

There are many elderly drivers who are in the first stage of Alzheimer's and they still drive. As far as I know, there's no law against it. And when they get to a more advanced stage, they will likely switch to golf cart.
Also, there are elderly golf cart drivers with eyesight problems who couldn't get their driver's license renewed.
So, whenever I go for a walk on a golf cart path, I never take for granted that the driver coming toward me will automatically do the right thing. If it looks like they are coming to close to me, I step off into the grass. Better safe than sorry.

NG makes good points. I am more than happy to share multi model paths where no sidewalks are provided. Why do walkers need to walk in the street paths when sidewalks have been provided. If they stay out of the street when walking , I won't ride on the sidewalk. Their presence in the street paths does unnessarily create a potential traffic issue as well as creating unnecessary risks for themselves from moving vehicles.

Or....why do folks stop in the golf-cart lane on the streets??? Yesterday we were driving along and a couple was stopped on Stillwater and just sitting there---cars going both ways (a potential problem for other golf-carts to go around them). The wife was chatting on her cellphone. A side street was just a few feet away..if it was to take or make a call why not just pull over there?? We couldn't stop to see if they needed help...but we assumed they weren't in trouble. I've seen this more than once.

I have told my wife that we need to visit there in the winter before we decide to buy there. This reaffirms it for me. We have visited there 3 times now but they have all been in late spring or summer. We do love it there but I do have to experience what it is like during snowbird season.
I only had one incident with a road rage driver in all our stays. After I passed him he started tailgating me and then over by the square at Lake Sumter he passed me in the wrong lane going about 30 around the square. I thought he might have been a little insane so I let him go and didn't confront him.

This is one of things I have done most of my life and I would highly recommend it.
Park in the back of the parking lot..
1. Easy to find a spot.
2. As fast as driving looking for a closer spot. I frequently find myself walking in the door ahead of or with those that were looking for a closer spot.
3. Less likely to get hit by a car door or shopping cart.. Unless it is windy... shopping carts can get blown in your direction.. then park accordingly.
4. Good exercise.
5. Helps others who are "looking for a closer spot".
6. Easier to get your car into and out of... most accidents in parking lots occur when someone is backing out.
6A. Easier to get your body in and out of .. open your doors wide and do not worry about hitting another car.
7. Less frustration from "looking for the close spot, competing with others who are about to enter "the spot" that is "yours".
8. Most of all, you will enjoy the shopping experience more one you have eliminated the "parking hassle".
9. One last tip.. if you think you will use a cart when you exit the store.. try to park near a cart parking stall.. There are usually ones towards the end of the rows.
Enjoy.

Your incident could have happened anywhere in the country.............

Don't EVER confront a driver down here! You never know if they have a gun on the front seat. This can be true any place in the country, not just in this area. Drivers who exhibit road rage have intense anger that they do not know how to vent properly. Most likely they are sociopaths who have no regard for human life. Confronting them will not help and you could get hurt. A prison sentence is no big deal to someone who is going to "win the battle" at all costs.
