Robhall has a great point. A wireless home network is easy to set up, and you have no messy wiring.
My network has a desktop computer with a computer connected to it. There are 3 laptops with wireless access to the printer, through the desktop. Very easy to set up.

I got a couple of quotes but I wanted a cable run from the front bedroom (office) to the living room and to an outside wall. It was too difficult, so it meant either run it outside and through the walls (I didn't want to do that) or run it down an interior wall then have a cable along the baseboard for several feet (I didn't want that either).
So I bought a second router with 'dd-wrt' firmware and configured it as a 'repeater' to give me better coverage all over the house and onto the lanai. I have now reconfigured this router as a 'repeater bridge' so still have the wifi and am able to connect the TV to it with an ethernet cable.
This seems to be working fine and was the best solution for me.
