Since the attack on my computer in recent weeks my Microsoft automatic update will not enable. The Microsoft red shield is present in the lower right.
When opened it brings up a window allowing turning on/off various security functions. One of them is auto updating. When I click to turn it on it pops a balloon that says it cannot and recommends going to the control panel to enable it manually.
When I locate the screen I want in Systems-auto updates tab....the auto update is already checked. I tried disabling and applying and then re-enable the auto update with no success.
I understand there are methods/links to correct this problem. To date I have not found the solution.
Any others have the problem? Did you find a solution?
Will I be able to update manually from time to time?

I know this sounds pretty basic but I would give a shot at shutting down the computer and let it reboot and then see what takes place after you log back in. Has worked for me many times in the past.

Try Google. I have found answers to computer questions in the past.

For what it's worth, if it was my computer I'd do a System Restore and I'd select a date just before all of this started to happen. I'm thinking that you system will be back to normal.
click All Programs
click Accessories
click System Tools
click System Restore
click Next
click show more restore dates
click on the date you want selected
click next
It'll take a little while - just let it work. It'll shutdown and restart at least once. Be patient, let it finish on it's own. Sometimes it doesn't look like it's doing anything.

What version of Windows and what SP level?
If an older SP2 level of XP, there is a solution on the MS Support site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916261
If Vista, the Vistaheads site has this this solution:
http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/182629-cant-enable-automatic-updates.html
Other sites have also mentioned running Malwarebytes then trying after getting the PC to a "clean" state.
Might want to give them a try before reverting to a previous system restore point.

We also recommend after running your anti virus to clear all cookies/cache on your computer before you return to surfing the net.

Had the same problem twice, once while the computer was still under warranty, so Dell fixed it, and again last year. Both times it was a virus and was not simple to fix.:cus:
