used to be i could just click once on my back arrow to return to any main discussion page BUT today i have to click twice...one click takes me nowhere [physically] except that the back arrow reads http://googleleads.g.doubleclick.net.page
does anyone have any idea what the heck this is - besides just annoying?

thanx for the referral - but it did not help me understand this situation...is this something that the admin is responsible for? the referred site did not recommend how to get rid of the annoyance - or did i miss that?

There were no Google ads displayed on TOTV today, so this is likely a result that as you are surfing the internet Google is trying to get you involved in a survey and that (DoubleClick) is the company that conducts the surveys. I've had it happen to me as I'm on the internet and the attached images are examples of what I've seen.
If anyone has any site related issues please feel free to email us at talkofthevillages@gmail.com.

I have had no IE security or NAV warnings while surfing all over TOTV
Wonderful!

I'm thinking it's more than a mere annoyance - and that tracking is probably the answer. If I'm being tracked, I would expect the owners of this site to let me know so I can opt out if I prefer. But I guess in this "digital age" that's probably too much to ask.

NO, we do not track at TOTV. Please see our post above, this is done when you are surfing the web through your browser ie: Internet Explorer. We do not track any device at TOTV. You should make sure you clear your cookies and cache after each internet session to better protect your privacy.

I bet you don't have this problem with another browser. I would suspect you are using IE and if you went to say FireFox you wouldn't experience this. This is not a TOTV site issue but your browser. We'd recommend running your anti virus and then clearing all your cookies and cache.

Run your anti virus, clear your cookies and cache, and try another browser besides IE. If you have or had a virus you may also need to reset your router.

Interesting that before I could post today, I had to click to accept TOTV terms for posting. Not a problem, but just wondering if this is something new from the Admins, or something that is now required annually to be done by TOTV posters.

Possibly the same reason for it here!

skyguy, now that I'm not the only one to have to do this, it must be an annual reminder about the posting rules for TOTV that everyone will need to read and accept before they can post again.

On the IE9 double click. This may sound stupid but is there not a malware out there called doubleclick? I am not an expert on this.

If it only happens on a certain site then you have to suspect a Key Logger Device or a Spyware / Malware /program that is recording your clicks? IMHO
But as I say I am Nooooooo expert on computer items. Just sort of always curious about " Cause and Effect"
Doctor- Computer Experts- CarGuys - Science Guys we are always looking at the Cause and effect of a diagnoistic procedure.
But it's late I better quit before I get in trouble-
I would revert your IE back to IE8 and see if this still happens. I belive if you do a uninstall it will put you back to the previous version.
If it is gone there is your problem. Stay with IE 8 until they debug it.

Just started happening to me too. I'm running IE9, Vista, MS Security Essentials and MalwareBytes Pro on this PC. Ran Glary Utilities, cleared out all my cookies, and even removed all IE Add-ons but still had same problem - but only on this site.
Rooted around and saw numerous mentions of it elsewhere (including this one the Fusion site (http://www.adminfusion.com/forums/466-vbulletin/76027-back-button-not-working-ie.html)) and this little tidbit on:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie9-windows_7/ie-9-back-browser-button-not-working/f0f0847b-6155-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?msgId=41000b47-eb20-4783-a9dd-fbe15ae1bed0
I may try the bit about blocking googleads.g.doubleclick.net just for S&G's later today but I've got to get back to real-life retirement -e.g. golf and billiards!
This sounds like it's gonna be a tricky one-:)

What I find baffling is why some of us are having these problems whereas some of us are not. I for one am not having the same problems being discussed and can't figure out why that is if a connection to TOTV is really involved. Because of this I find it hard to believe that TOTV has any direct connection to the problem.
As for the cookies like doubleclick, I checked my computer yesterday and had several being doubleclick and a lot more from elsewhere. I used to be concerned and tried deleting as many as I could find to delete while keeping those I didn't want to. What I found was that I was experiencing an exercise in futility because within a day or two most were back again. It was a never ending battle and I gave up trying long ago except when I do an occasional clearing of my cashe.
In the past I have had personal experience in this area as well as being a 10 year administrator for a moderately large award winning non-profit website. I don't however consider myself an expert by any means, but I do wish that I did have the expertise to be able to identify why others are having a problem and possibly be able to identify the problem and offer a solution, but sadly I can't. I would love to be able to do that!

Google blames Microsoft and Microsoft blames Google. Hence why I've gone on to use Firefox. Since becoming accustom to using something different, I now prefer it. To your point if you surf the internet you will get tagged with cookies that try to track what your interest are so ultimately they can target you with relevant advertising.

Aside from that I had a problem that others didn't mention with previewing posts and sometimes when posting. The page would render in mostly text sometimes rather than the the full HTML. I think I've found a solution to that problem by disabeling add-ons in IE. Haven't had the problem with testing it several times, but won't trust it's solved until more posting are done. So far I haven't noticed any problems in doing so! Fingers are crossed and tme will tell.

That's certainly seems to be the concensus out there. As promised, I tried the suggestion on: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...d-fbe15ae1bed0 (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...d-fbe15ae1bed0)
in which the poster suggested adding an exclusion to IE under the Security tab.
After going thru numerous permutations of googleads.doubleclick.net (using * to expand the range of exclusions) and not having any success (perhaps because that poster was on IE8 and I'm on IE9), I had a "DUH moment" before adding "*.doubleclick.net" to my firewall's Blocked Sites list.
Worked like a charm.
Took it out and the problem returned.
Since I see no particular reason for permitting **** -- (my stars;) ) --from doubleclick.net coming into my purview, it's gonna stay there -- even if MS and Google work out their pi**ing contest!!
Have a nice night and a great New Years!!

You might be happy with another browser but I am not. I have tried the other browsers and I like the functions that IE9 offers.
This doubleclick thing is not a virus as all of us that have scanned our systems with our anti-virus and our Malware products have found out. Our systems are clean.
In doing some research, I found this site that discusses the same problem:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/AdWords/thread?tid=2eb1fb1299d95f6f&hl=en
This link discusses other sites that use googleads as a base.
I did find out that if you right click on the return arrow (left arrow), you can click on the entry under the googlead entry and get back to where you really want to go. Not sure it is any faster but it bypasses any googlead link and hopefully screws up their counts.
So until it gets fixed I guess us IE9 users have to live with it.

That is so true.
GM and OnStar just got pounded by the media for using your locations while driving your vehicle to sell your information and habits.
Verison and I Phone have been doing this for years! Only way to stop it is take you battery out. With OnStar you have to go into the dealership and have it modified!
So now the Wife wonders why we are getting Junk mail and Coupouns for Biker Bars, Chicken Wing Joints and Houses of I'll Repute!

PS...forgot to add this bit to my "Solved it" post above for those who are adamant IE users.
After adding "doubleclick.net" to the Block Sites section in my Netgear router/firewall, when I mouseover the IE left arrow I no longer see that long googleads.doubleclick link but rather the usual context of wherever you were previously on TOTV.
That being said, I do have to agree with Admin's preference for Mozilla as I find it a lot faster, more stable, better add-ons and less overhead but I will say no more lest we start that debate! I do still use IE for testing purposes and just could not pass up this challenge -- now if MS and Google would just kiss and makeup...

Okay, here's the fix: In IE7, IE8, or IE9 click on Tools, then click on Internet Options, then click on the Security Tab. Click on the Restricted Sites Icon all the way to the right. Click on Sites (just below the Restricted Sites Icon). In the Add this Website to the Zone box, clear whatever is in there. Type *.doubleclick.com and click on Add. Go back to the Add this Wesite to the Zone box and clear anything that is in there. Type *.doubleclick.net and click on Add. Click on Close. Click on OK and you are done.
Added: Then go two posts down (#39) and make those changes.
Go back to Talk of the Villages and go to a thread. Click on the back button and wah-lah, all fixed.

Did not work for me. I checked and both sites are in the list. I even shut down IE9 and restarted it. Darn!!
I guess I will have to try to put in the firewall in my router also.
Seems to be a hassle when it is not our problem.

Ah...I did not have that latter one set in my browser....good catch. Just tested and that definitely makes it work w/o adding the router/firewall block -- although I'll probably put doubleclick.net back in there as I see no particular reason for looking at their ads. But based upon all the vulnerabilites with IFrames mentioned above and elsewhere (see below), that setting is most definitely something that is going to stay.
Thanks!!

KittyKat, Just maintain a little patience. From what I am reading the malware messages are gone. I for one, did not have the problem at all and I use two desktops and two laptops as well as a tablet.
The problem with having to click twice to move back is related to the Internet Explorer Browser. I also use Firefox and do not have that problem. Irregardless, it is still just a minor problem and I am sure a "fix" will be found.
Also pining for the old admin may be misguided. The changes that the new owner has made are exponentially more professional and profitable which will assure continued "free" access to the forum. Before this owner, the forum interpersonalities were spinning out of control and even the admin was subjecting members to personal abuse. Revenue is up and I see only more good things to come.
Just remember that the use of digital technology is generally never a click on a button and forget it proposition. Computer technology and internet communications are in a constant flux. All it takes is to read the "entire" screen before you do anything. It is often easy to miss critical little messages and alerts.
Hang in there, we don't want to lose you!

It's just my humble opinion that the problem that the TOTV website has unknowingly created is apparent to the customer clients who happen to use Internet Explorer. I don't believe that primary causality can be attributed to Internet Explorer.
Just saying ...

The problem with having to click twice to move back is related to the Internet Explorer Browser. I also use Firefox and do not have that problem. Irregardless, it is still just a minor problem and I am sure a "fix" will be found.
users should NOT have to change browsers just because of a quirk they did not couase on this website
Also pining for the old admin may be misguided. The changes that the new owner has made are exponentially more professional and profitable which will assure continued "free" access to the forum. Before this owner, the forum interpersonalities were spinning out of control and even the admin was subjecting members to personal abuse. Revenue is up and I see only more good things to come.
sorry - that's just your not so humble opinion.
Just remember that the use of digital technology is generally never a click on a button and forget it proposition. Computer technology and internet communications are in a constant flux. All it takes is to read the "entire" screen before you do anything. It is often easy to miss critical little messages and alerts.
and administrators should read enough to know about the problems that changes and improvements can import! sometimes there is no reason to fix something that isn't broken.
Hang in there, we don't want to lose you!

So it looks like the combination of changes (Posts 37 and 39) made the difference. I'm pretty sure the fix won't cause you any problems. Thanks for trying it and reporting back. I really appreciate it. ....and I agree that this isn't something we should have to be doing. Now that we know how to work around it, maybe Admin and TOTV can figure out what is wrong. Best of luck to them.

THANK YOU to the volunteer totv tech staff! :bigbow:
using the combination of posts 37/39 i am no longer annoyed by doubleclick!

Click on Tools, Click on Security, Click on Custom level, Find "Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" and click on Disable. Find "Websites in less privileged web content can navigate into this zone" and click on Disable. Click on OK and Click on OK.

I would like to add some clarity to this thread.
We have not made any recent upgrades or changes as some have referenced to the software running the site which would have attributed to some reported issues.
When Google or Microsoft make changes to what they do, they do not notify Talk of the Villages, so we have to try to assist users on a case by case basis to assist them with specific issues as they are reported. Some are simple and some are not. Google and Microsoft will offer no, zero, nada assistance what so ever to us.
Obviously the back button is an exclusive issue to some IE users. It is NOT an issue on FireFox or Safari. We have been trying to research why some IE users are having to double click the back button. Again, we have not made any changes on our end. If you Google this it is not a TOTV issue but common across many sites going back to 2005 from what I've already researched.
We spend countless hours and invest money in whatever we need to and in additional resources and contractors to assist us and users with any technical issues that arise.
This is a FREE site for everyone to use and sell your Homes, Cars, Personal items, get free advice, rent your homes, and socialize. We hope everyone can benefit from the value of the site and we appreciate your support and patience. As always, feel free to email us with any issues we can assist with at talkofthevillages@gmail.com.

I know it's in IE9 but not sure if it's in previous versions:
Click "Tools" in IE, and then click "Internet Options."
Click the "Programs" tab, and then click "Manage add-ons.
(You can also access Manage Add-ons directly in the Tools drop down list)
Select "Tracking Protection."
Double Click "Your Personalized List"
Use "content to block or allow"
Scroll down if necessary and find "Doubleclick.net"
Click "Block"
Take caution if blocking other items and keep a record if you do. They could be locations you don't want to block and may need to change the setting back!

It's just my humble opinion that the problem that the TOTV website has unknowingly created is apparent to the customer clients who happen to use Internet Explorer. I don't believe that primary causality can be attributed to Internet Explorer.
Just saying ...
Xavier
Xavier, I think your humble opinion is also on target. When using my IE, I do not have to double click on any other sites other than TOTV.

The reason you may not see it on another site is that the other site may not deliver up google ads and/or another site may not have an ad network that has tracked the browser activity. If you google double click back button you will find that this is a universal issue across many sites that goes back for years.
We also found in our research that the double click address is a google ad address that is showing in your browser history. Those are/were never actually displayed as pages, the address is simply where the google ad comes from that is on a site. For some reason (flaw, bug in IE9) that remnant of the google ad happens to show in the history IE9. Since those pages were never actually displayed in the first place, when you click "back" button, the IE history realizes you never really visited those pages and removes them from the history. It is essentially a very minor flaw in IE9 and doesn't effect its use or functionality in any way.
We have not made ANY changes to the site. This is only an IE issue for some users. We will continue to look for a resolution to make everyone's experience as pleasant as possible. Please email us for further assistance at talkofthevillages@gmail.com
