Oh, Judy, I need an "Oil Painting for Dummies" course, not occasional assistance. I need someone to explain the most basic info. I think they probably have courses at the LLL College. I'm not in TV yet so I don't have a catalogue.

The absolute best colored pencil teacher in the universe lives here and teaches here...Nan Klein. I went from o.k. to pretty good in her portrait classes. I have taken three series from her at the LifeLong Learning College. She honestly is that rare gem who knows how and knows how to show you how.

I made a donation for art supplies at ArtRoomAid.com and won a colored pencil set. I was looking for classes and I am glad that you mentioned that teacher. I have always been an artist at heart but haven't unpacked all of my supplies. I have taken watercolor classes and tried oils for a change. I look forward to being able to take classes again. It has been awhile since I have painted.

Bare, this class is through the Lifelong Learning College. Fortunately, I have my catalog handy:
Beginning Oil (or Acrylic) Painting for the Terrified
Teacher: Pat Ford ISEA-NF, FWS
This is a class for beginners as well as someone who wants to learn to paint without constant supervision. You may use oils or acrylic paints -- the first class will help you make an educated choice. You will learn how to use your supplies and WHY you use those particular materials. You will learn the proper way to approach any subject from the ground up as you lay a good foundation for your painting and then carry it through to completion. Color mixing and finishing framing will also be covered in the class. You will be able to choose your own subject matter. You will be responsible for providing your own materials and easel. (although you can work off a table) Supply list will be covered in the first class. Bring a pencil and paper to first class.

There are also a dozen one-day Bob Ross classes (Thursdays 11:30-3:30through May) taught by Carolee McReynolds for $46 each

Creating Oil or Acrylic Paintings
Teacher: Russell O'Brien has a series of 4-week classes from 1-3 on Fridays for $61. The classes run through the end of June, so you could probably find one that fits your schedule...
During this course individual attention is given to students in the basics of painting such as perspective, color, composition, brush stroke, and the business of art is taught while creating a painting in either the oil or acrylic media. The student will supply his/her own subject matter, such as flowers, landscapes, or seascapes, as all students create a different painting at the same time. No portraits will be taught until the student acquires knowledge of the basics of painting.

There is also (through the College) a workshop with artist Roger Bansemer March 8-9 Acrylic/Oil 9-4 $262

This class is about how to see with an artist's eye and not about technical ability. Roger says, "Let's enjoy the process and not worry about the results."

Any reason why you like oils, Bare? I haven't ever tried them, but chose acrylics because they dry faster and you can easily paint over them, because I am always modifying my paintings. I am not to the level that I use the fine Grumbacher paints but I do use tubes not bottles.

I just love the opportunity to be in classes with such creative people of all skill levels. To see a senior learning and painting and drawing beautiful stuff because they now have the time and opportunity is so wonderful. We have so much inside of us to put on the canvas and paper.

The amazing talent of my fellow students spurs me on.

The neat thing about oils Gracie, is that you have time (and the viscosity of the wet paint) to move paint on the canvas, to blend color bands and soften edges as you go.... for days at a time.
Oils also appear more jewel tone in color, so offer more depth easier than acrylics do.... and if you really screw up, you can just wipe them off and begin again.... no problem.
The downside is they take much longer to dry when you are all done... but patience is a virtue, I'm told!

Lots of people stay away from oils because of the turpentine used in medium formulas and for clean up, but there are advanced products available now that are much friendlier to use and work quite well.
There are also water soluble oils available now (soap and water clean up) and some really find them wonderful to play with. (I use them for glazing) They are more transparent than traditional oils and can dry much faster too.

I heartily agree how inspiring it is to see and share the joy others experience when their vision becomes manifest. There's nothing else like it... and I hope to paint until I croak!

I took watercolour classes here, and I found the medium unforgiving. I also like really vivid colours. I hadn't thought about acrylics but I'm sure I'd be fine with either acrylics or oils. I have no talent, but I do have a lot of desire!

Last month my wife put a new oil painting on the garage work bench to dry but didn't tell me it was wet. A few days later I was looking for something around the bench and grabbed the painting to move it. Now the painting has my finger prints on it - hope she doesn't look real close at it!
