I thought it would be worth mentioning that over the year end holidays I had Windows 7 installed on my desk top and lap top and have not had one single "attack" since.

I still run Microsoft Security Essential, Malwarebytes and Spybot search and destroy.

Billy,

I also run Windows 7 and have since shorty after it came out. I still have not had one attack specifically during the recent period when many were having problems and I don't run Malwarebytes or Spybot. I did install them both for a very short time, but ended up taking them off when I discovered that they didn't discover anything. Chances are that the culprit was on your hard-drive and a clean install of Windows 7 got rid of it. Happy computing!

I had XP on my Laptop, had to download everything to an external hard drive. Then I was able to reload Win 7 Home Premium, then reload from the external drive after all of the windows updates were installed (about 2 hours). To get audio had to to run in compatible mode, everthing else works great.
