I am curious what rooms people have repurposed, like a dining room into a sitting room, a kitchen alcove into an office. Even if a change did not work, I'd still like to hear about it. We own a home but are not full time yet. Thanks.

In our new house we turned our third bedroom into an office, den, TV watching area, puzzle area, sewing area and no cat zone. Our new son in law is allergic to kitties and we have two of them.

Our house, a Whispering Pine, has the living room and dining room in an L shape. Since we didn't see the need for a dining room we converted it into a reading area and purchased a sofa bed for it. However the area tends to be dark so we installed a solar tube there. We have had my sons family a couple of times for Thanksgiving and either used the breakfast area off the kitchen or ate in the Florida room. We were able to seat 7 people comfortably.

As I walked around the main area of our Lantana this morning I was wondering why we needed two eating areas. The area is L-shaped and we have the dining room area, then the living room area, then the breakfast nook area. The only time that we sat at the dining room table was Christmas. I think the dining room area or the breakfast nook should be repurposed, but how.
The funny thing is that we just downsized from a premier St. Augustine because it was too big and we never used the living room. We just walked through it to get from one side of the house to the other. Now we are doing the same thing in our downsized house.
We don't need two eating areas - help.

We turned our breakfast eating area into a little reading area/TV watching spot. It's perfect!

We didn't use the breakfast nook in our Gardenia so we moved the bamboo table and chairs to the Lanai and made the space ecletic extreme with a recliner for reading, a secretary for an office and a kitchen floor cabinet for extra kitchen storage. It won't make an issue of Homes & Gardens Magazine, but it works for us!

We are builing a Begonia and I also felt we didn't need a kitchen eat-in area, bar stools at the counter, formal dining and a table/chairs on the lanai. I'm using the kitchen eating area for a desk and work area. Having a built in kitchen desk and some extra drawers. How many eating areas do you need?

into a reading/meditation room by enclosing it with glass and putting in a fountain. Could also put an air mattress in for an extra room to sleep. Love it!

We built a "Cyprus" in 2007. We extended the eating area in the kitchen by 2feet and made it into a sitting room with a big flat scree TV on the wall, a comfortable couch and several chairs. We taked about adding a gas fireplace but since we alread had a gas fireplace in the living room we decided not to do it. We eat our meals either at the kitchen counter or in the dinning room.
Have a Lantana and the front, large bedroom is our family room.....large screen tv, sofa, loveseat, bookcase. Used to have our desks, but with laptops we found we never used them so they're gone.
I do have a large table in the dining room, but it is seldom used for dining. It is used as a craft table, work table, sewing area, etc. It's a tall table and I can actually set up my sewing machine and stand as I work....very comfortable...and there's lots of room for material, sewing tools, etc.

What you didn't mention, but I will, is that your whole house is absolutely beautiful!!!

Hubby has graciously agreed to my desire to have our third bedroom be my art studio.... craft table, easel, stool and room for large canvases.
We had the carpet removed and continued the foyer flooring into the studio and it's closet.
The closet is now filled with wall to wall shelves, top to bottom. Plenty of room for art supplies and other oddball items we want handy, but out of view.
We also have the printer and shredder in there, with room to spare. It's great, away from the main living area and has a cross breeze from the front door when I want to have one.
Ours is a CYV.

Thanks for all the ideas. I just know I don't need a sitting area in the kitchen nook, the counter and the dining room. I will need the space for other activities. I plan on having people over but not to have a sit down dinner for 20 or more very often (like never, oh, perhaps once or twice in the next 20 years) Thanks again.

Not sure what model our friends have, but one of their bedrooms had sliding doors that opened to the lanai. They made the room a bar. Put beautiful upper & lower cabinets with a granite top, an 8 foot bar & a juke box that we use for karaoke. It' s a fun beautiful room. They even had a sink put in.

Rather than have a 3rd BR that remains unused most of the time ( a bit like our guest BR ) we opted to make this room multi functional. We have a comfortable sleep sofa, a small entertainment center that holds our TV, DVR and has two drawers for guest to put their cloths. We just purchased a desk that will be used as a sewing/craft table, writing desk and printer table.
We now have a multi functional room that gets much more use than it otherwise would have.

I think this is the MOST popular option. We don't plan to have a traditional dining room, the hutch and china cabinets will go in there, but I think my computer hutch and files will be there, too. We have an extra dining table that folds to only 2' X 4' and looks like a side table for when we have a big party.

Our front bedroom is my wife's craft room or at least it will be as soon as we have the carpet removed and tile installed. The idea posted earlier about floor to ceiling shelves in the closet sounds good too. That's definitely something to think about.
