View Full Version : Cane Garden, what happened??

Two times in one week, I have gone for lunch. They cut a lot of things off the menu, including some good wraps, like the Thai chicken wrap, did away with the spinach salad with the toasted walnuts and chicken..etc. Today, my dining companion ordered a hamburger, one of their best sandwiches, and got what looked like a small sausage patty on a big bun. We got the pizza(no more choice of individual toppings) and my friends got salads. We sat in a table assigned, and were seated at 11:40. At 12:15, we were given our bills, and we paid them, and sat back a few minutes more to finish our drinks. We had not been in our seats for 5 minutes after the waitress took the bill, when the manager appeared and asked us to leave so she could seat a large party. We would have gladly moved to another booth or table...or..she could have moved us with a complimentary dessert or coffee refill, but her words were rude and uncalled for to ask a customer to get up and leave as soon as we got the bill and paid it. I am not one that lingers in a restaurant when patrons are waiting, but the "bum's rush," subpar food, and limited selection of old favorites has me saying "sayonara" to this place. This used to be my favorite...no more, sorry

Their poor treatment and seating procedures have caused my large golf group to boycott the CG Restaurant for over a year now. We go downtown for lunch each time we play cane Garden.

Can understand why you'd be upset with such treatment. Do have to say we ate there on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago - had a large party of 12. The group did have to split up but all the meals were good; hubby loved the fish sandwich and we'll go back to try it again.

Cane Garden does a much better job of handling things in the evening. It must be daunting to have large groups at lunch time. We have experienced waits with golf groups at lunch time too, but the food is always good and the servers do the best they can.

My ladies golf group received very similar treatment when we went for lunch. Despite other tables being open, we were seated adjacent to the kitchen door. I was not the leader of the group because I would have requested one of the other open tables away from the kitchen door. The entire luncheon was permeated with a "take it, or leave it" attitude. Last summer, the same ladies golf group took our business elsewhere as the service, attitude and presentation of food left too much to be desired. Sad, because we had always enjoyed Cane G as its attractive and in such a great location. Sigh

Not sure about the "poor" experiences listed here at CG. We went with friends a couple of weeks ago for a burger for supper and were VERY satisfied! Large burgers and plate of fries were very good as was the service.

Perhaps at noon the groups have tended to linger long to chat for long periods and that makes for the back-ups. When a place is very busy and people don't eat and leave it's hard to keep things moving. JMHO on what I'm not really sure is happening.

Our golf group has experienced same during "the season" when crowded, however "off season" when less crowded there have been no issues mid-day/early afternoon with seating, etc. We like the course and restaurant. jmho....

I used to go to Cane Garden a lot to eat a quick bite between jobs. Loved their burgers and they didn't mind a single -- usually got a booth close to the front. The last two times were enough to convince me that I need to find another "drop-in" spot. Burger was smaller, service was so-so, manager came up and told me I needed to eat faster (!!!) since the restaurant was getting full. Never again for me.

No way!! A manager tells you to eat faster???? This is absurd!!!

I don't know what I would have said.

Well, she did say please. rofl Actually, I was so shocked I didn't say a word but I will admit it took me twice as long to eat as usual (was reading a good book on my Kindle). Sometimes I can be so passive-aggressive.

If the manager said this to a friend of mine.

He would have asked him if his hospital insurance was paid up.:1rotfl:

If the manager had said that to me I wouild have just sat there just to spite him. That is the lowest in treating customers that I have ever heard. I ate there in January and had no problems at all in fact I had to ask for my bill.

In lieu of the tragedy of the Cane Garden employees, they are closed this weekend. It is too bad it had to happen to anyone, let alone the young kids that worked there. This post was made at the beginning of the week, and was, in fact, more a criticism of the lady that was managing the restaurant at that time. These guys had no decision making in the running off of customers nor the changes in the menu. My sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased.

It must be difficult for restaurant managers when there are people waiting for tables and guests linger. Last night we waited over an hour at Havana while people just sat and talked long after they had paid. I think there was a bigger crowd because Cane Garden was closed but I would think that the people who lingered had to be aware of the huge crowds waiting for tables.

The Village Girl
02-12-2012, 01:31 PM
I understand your frustration for waiting for a table.

In Europe, a table is yours until you leave and it's considered rude to bring a check to a table until it's asked for. While I agree that I hate to wait for a table, but I for one think we need to be able to enjoy our friends, conversations, eat slower and enjoy life. I hate going out to eat and before the meal is completed someone is bringing me a check. I also want to linger over coffee and dessert or and after dinner drink and enjoy the evening. That's what "dining" is supposed to be about.

I lived in a city that you couldn't make a reservation at a restaurant and sometimes had to wait a few hours to be seated. You got to know people at the bar and they serve appraisers while you wait. It was the evening!!!!! No one cared! Make it fun and people will come back!

Paulandjean...I apologized to you in a post above in the event that I misunderstood your post.

I guess I should have said "insinuating" instead of "accusing". And I apologize for that.

It's just that in your first post above that I quoted, you said, "I cannot beleive they would say hurry up and eat".

To me, personally, that really does sound like an insinuation. I have been on this forum for a few years now and I, like many others, respect Redwitch and her posts and I don't think that she would make up a comment like that.

Sooo...if I have offended you, I am sorry. And if you feel like I like to stir up trouble and think I am always right, I am sorry about that also.

You're right, the exact words were not "hurry up and eat" (not that I said they were) nor were they "eat faster" (which is what I did say but did not say it was a quote). I don't remember the exact words but it was basically, words to the effect that the restaurant was filling up (there were still at least 4 tables, probably 5 or 6 open around me) and could I please not take my time reading while I ate. Sorry, when I'm eating alone, I'm reading and eating. I still eat at a reasonable rate. And, had I not been asked to leave, I would have been done in about 15 minutes from getting my food. As it was, I sat there for well over an hour.

As was said, what could I possibly gain by relating this story? I don't stir up trouble but I don't back down from it, either.

Did the manager know you? Since you were a regular and stopped in there between jobs, I just wonder if perhaps it was someone you knew and they felt like they could be honest and say to you, 'Hey, we are busy. Could you eat more and read less? I need that booth.'

You know what I mean?

I'm not excusing someone being rude, just trying to get inside the head of a manager who would seemingly, intentional ruin a business. I can see where people who don't know you would think it is an unbelievable story. It is unbelievable that the manager of Cane Gardens would say anything along those lines to a customer.

For the most part it is very disconcerting when groups tend to stay long after their bill has been paid knowing full well that there is a line of diners waiting to get into any particular restaurant. This is by no means to say that the server was right or that the manager was at fault.
I had a similar situation in NY and the manner in which was handled was to say the least, professional. After a most pleasant dinner with another couple we had continued to linger and talk. The Owner/Manager sent the server to our table with an offer to join him, the owner, at the bar for an after dinner drink. Obviously, we got the hint and found the suggestion, not rude, but more productive and appreciated than saying "get the hell up, we need the table."

I knew who she was and she probably had seen me, but we'd never talked before. I had not been there for 30 minutes, had only gotten my food no more than 10 minutes previously, so my length of time was not unreasonable. And do remember there were empty tables around me (the front always fills up last). As matter of fact, when I left there was still one empty table in the front. (I do try to time my dining times pre- or post-rush hours.)

There is a reality that singles are frequently treated with disdain in restaurant. They take up a table meant for at least two people, order and only pay for one meal and usually drink less and usually tip accordingly. I do tip as if there had been two orders if I get reasonable service. I believe anything less is ill mannered. So, rude service is not uncommon. That was one of the things I truly had appreciated about Cane Garden -- it didn't matter that I was a single or what time I showed up. If they had a table, I was welcomed and treated well and their food was good.

And I'm truly sorry. I wasn't trying to stir up the pot. As a matter of fact, I would not have posted at all had it not been that others had experienced negative attitude themselves.

Red, it really irks me that you were/are treated in such a disrespectful manner. You weren't stirring up anything. Just relating an experience. That is what this forum is all about. I was just hoping above all hopes that it was someone who thought they knew you well enough to have temporarily forgotten that you were a customer of the business and not a friend they could come across in a manner a little less, shall we say, professional.
