Yippee!! After 3 trips down and much searching for the perfect home, we have purchased our new to us CYV in beautiful Calumet Grove.
Thrilled to be villagers, even if we will rent it out until we retire.
Looking so forward to being part of all The Villages offers and represents.

You are going to love it! Where do you hail from. We are from Stratford, ON and formerly Toronto and Wasaga Beach. We come Sept-Nov. and Feb-May as that is the best weather down in TV. So Feb. is the loooong month after Christmas is over.

Check out the Loonie/Toonies club whenever you are in. The monthly meeting is worth going to as the info is specifically geared to Canucks in the US.

I'm sure you will be giddy for some time. I still get excited each time I get ready to go south and it is our 6th trip own.

I would love to hear about your journey from your first visit to look at real estate, to deciding where you wanted to live and in what type of housing. I'm always curious how that search progresses. I hope to be making it myself one day soon!!

Welcome to The Villages. We are from Newmarket, Ontario. We bought a home in Historical 2 years ago after many visits down to stay with our friends. We just love it here. My husband is here all winter as he is retired. I am in TV for the school holidays. I'm planning to teach for a few more years and then winter in Florida for as long as I can. Love the biking trails, restaurants and the novelty of going everywhere by cart. It's Disneyland for adults :a040:!

Congratulations, you are now an official Villager! Feels great doesn't it? This is our fifth winter in TV. I think we appreciate it even more because we are only allowed to stay in the US for 182 days.

I think we appreciate it even more because we are only allowed to stay in the US for 182 days.

Curious question:

"What happens if a Canadian reident stays in the US for more than 182 days?".

What are the penalties?

Canadians could potentially be denied entry the next time the try to enter the US. At the border, they keep track of your passport. The border guards have a lot of power. I know people that have been turned back.

If you are in the US illegally, there are both income tax and immigration implications. We would also need to buy extended Travel Medical Insurance, but that would be no problem. Believe me, we'd stay longer in the US if the US government would let us!

It's an issue that irks me, because there is no such thing as a Retiree Visa. There should be; it would put more money into the US economy. There are a lot of Canadians and Brits who would stay longer and spend more money. We own a house in TV, pay taxes year round, but can only occupy it for 182 days in a calendar year. We'd love to stay longer, and retirees spend money when they're in the US without placing any drain on schools or any US resources. There is a bill in Congress right now which would allow Canadians to stay longer than 182 days. But there isn't much focus on it, or interest in passing it.

It is 182 within a Jan-Dec. year, right? Just realized that we have to count travel days so we will have to wait til mid Sept. in the fall to return. Really have to be vigilant about the exact days now that we are coming for 3 month periods and not just the 62 days that we had originally planned. I guess that's what happens, the more that we get involved in TV. Hope that the L&T group can advocate for a longer stay for Canadians. Makes so much sense and is really a win-win.

Barefoot:

I sure hope this question didn't push a hot button issue for you. Just a curious question that came to my mind.

I hope this bill is passed as it seems logical to me that people should be able to spend as much time as they feel they want to, anywhere in the world. Spending more money to benefit the US economy should be viewed as a good thing.

All :

I am not trying to make a political statement. So please don't throw tomatoes at me. :)

Any day that you're in the USA for even an hour has to be counted in your 182 days. Definitely travel days have to be counted. And if you leave US soil, your absence can't be deducted from the 182 days unless you're absent for at least 30 days! So if you fly back to Canada for three weeks, you've still considered to be in the US. Yes! I thought I could take a two-week cruise off US soil and extend my time in the US by two weeks, but not allowed!

Don't forget to fill out your Form # 8840 each year, for the US Government, detailing the amount of time you've spent in the US. It's called "Closer Connection Exemption Statement for Aliens". Seriously.

Well maybe if the bill passes, we could come back for Christmas and return the next month following month or in Feb. BTW Is there any news on the bill? Hope it is still alive and kicking.

You can follow progress of the Bill on WashingtonWatch.com - Welcome to WashingtonWatch.com (http://www.washingtonwatch.com)
It is called S. 1746, The Visa Improvements to Stimulate International Tourism to the USA Act. On 10/20/2011 it was referred to Senate Commitee. Read twice and referred to Committee on the Judiciary, and to the Committee on Homeland Security. In November it was referred to House subcommittee. Latest Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement.
