Are we ready for the $4+++ per gallon gasoline?

Can anybody recall what has been done in the last 3 years to stave off the impact of a cessation of oil coming from the mideast?

The answer is the same as in each administration since the oil embargo of the 70's......ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

I know in the coming weeks there will be the earth shattering offer by the current administration to release oil from our strategic reserves. And that will solve what? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING again. It will demonstrate the current administration is doing something about the problem. What they will hope, like all previous administrations is to bridge to the return of $3+++ per gallon gas....that we have all been trained to accept.

Then the fickle we the people will go back to being fat and happy that they don't have to pay $4+++ a gallon.....until the next time.

I personally look forward to a PROLONGED full and complete shut down of oil coming from the mideast. What we need is $6 +++ per gallon gasoline for a prolonged period of time to get we the peoples REAL attention....if that is even a possibility anymore.

Isn't anybody else curious about the standard approach of DOING NOTHING by our government, whether R or D in power?

Keep the R or D out of the discussion.....PLEASE TRY.....how do you think your life style will be affected by $6 +++ per gallon fuel prices?

I was paying more than 4 dollars a gallon in Europe 25 years ago. I think 4 dollars a gallon is very reasonable. What we need are higher MPG cars that will ease the pain at the pump. When you have people driving around in V8 Cadillacs, I mean really. Even here in the villages we have people with 4x4 V8 trucks and 7,000 lbs SUV's. I support their right to drive whatever they want, but not to complain about GAS prices.

I am glad you included the point that NO ONE has done much about oil independance. But until I retire gas prices don't affect me as I have a company car which comes with a gas card.

Still I drive an 4 banger mini SUV and use an electric cart in TV. ( But a new Yamaha fuel injected cart is on its way).

I'm going to fight back, I'm going to buy some oil company stocks such as Chevron , Conoco Phillips, etc. In the past when gas prices have risen, these companies have made obscene profits and their stock prices have risen dramatically. Buy now before gas goes over $4.00 per gal. Sell when it starts to fall. With Israel looking to bomb Iran the prices for a gal could go over $5.

Not sure where you were living in 2002 or there abouts but I know I was paying much more than $.79 a gallon for gas then.
According to my internet research national average gas prices have not been below $1 a gallon since the 1970's.

Well, in the Summer of 2008, I was paying $4.59 a gallon.

which is about a quarter of a US gallon, so that works out to $4 a gallon approx. I remember when gas was in the 50's and then the 60's and we couldn't believe that gas was going to go over $1 and then gradually it rose over the last 2 years. We are glad to be filling up in the US for 6 months of the year and feel that we are saving something. Looks like we are both moving in lock step up the ladder. But how can it be stopped? I don't understand the pricing process enough to make an intelligent comment, but would love to hear from anyone who might shed some light.

Why do you blame Obama for the price of gas?? In Montreal the price of gas is 1.49 per litre (approx $5.63 a gallon).. Is this also Obama's fault. You are lucky. Send me some of your gas.:sing:

Make that $5 by summer.. Obama will demand that the congress suspend the federal gas taxes to help the poor and the middle "class". He will say we can pay for it with a tax on the "rich". Repubs will cave to political pressure to help the middle "class" deal with the higher gas prices by suspending federal gas taxes, but will refuse to raise taxes on the "rich". The deficit will raise again.

one huge contributor to price increases this time of the year is when the refineries switch to summer blends. There are so many different state and local laws governing the types of gasoline allowed i.e. referred to as botique gasolines. When we lived near Louisville, KY in Jefferson County the gas was alway 20-30 cents higher than surrounding areas because of the "special" blend required in Jefferson County for so called anti pollution. The same thing happens in CA where there are even more varieties....hence higher prices. It was proven time and again that the special blends delivered no better air environment results than other areas. A consolidation/standardization of blends across the USA would have a significant impact on availability/cost/pricing. Politics and special interest groups are in the way.

Another big factor this year is the number of US refineries that are shut down due to lack of demand for gasoline. These capacities could be brought back on line to ease the false short supply line due to the closures.


Also for the first time in many years the US refineries have begun exporting gasoline....due to lack of domestic demand. Anybody want to bet that the oil companies are still exporting gasoline?

These very real examples underscore the oil industry controlling supply and demand and of course pricing.

These examples also demonstrate some very easy to implement corrective actions to help improve availability and pricing to the so called unstable economy and giving we the people the benefit of lower gasoline prices of days of old (not that long ago).

Until we the people demand more than just a simple price reduction we will continue to be last in priority to the oil companies and the puppet politicians who are on their payroll.

We the people get exactly what we deserve....by allowing non action to continue....NOTHING!!!!

Gosh, I do not know how this is all possible since the Dept of Energy came into being 1973 to develop an effective program to ensure plenty of oil and reasonable prices. Darn we didn't give DOE sufficient resources thousands of people and trilions of dollars to get the job done. Write your congressman and tell him/her to add trillions to the budget for DOE. Then the government can buy another Solyandra.

I specifically remember gas was selling for $1.50 a gallon when I moved to TV in 2000, the same as it was up north. When gas hits $5.00 a gallon, people will conserve and prices will come down when inventories rise as it always does.

Being retired and not having to drive much, I will continue to buy $20.00 of gas per month and when it's gone it's gone.

That is not true. As American troops stationed in Germany or any part of Europe we got Esso gas stamps that lowered the price of gas to what we would have been paying in the US at that time. Now the Germanys paid the full price, but we as US Service members did not. It's important to tell the whole truth not just some of it.

I paid more than 4 per gallon while traveling so I don't get your meaning. I was not referring you GI gas prices, but what I paid in France and Spain etc when we traveled.
