View Full Version : 2012 Villages Resident Survey - Yes to Indoor Pools
swimdawg

I received my letter regarding the Villages Resident Survey.
It will be ongoing for four weeks starting 3/12/12.
My one request.....for any of you who might think it is a good idea....to please suggest we have indoor pools in The Villages.
There is ever-increasing awareness of skin cancers and the necessity to avoid excesssive sun exposure. Indoor pools would surely alleviate that problem.
And, of course, indoor pools would be wonderful when the air is too cold to swim in outdoor pools (which I personally experienced on many occasions).
Please fill out your surveys and please think about adding something about how nice it would be to have indoor pools in TV. please

I think an indoor pool would be great. Not everyone has unlimited wealth to be able to put in a large pool in their backyard. I think it would benefit a lot of the residents that live here now that realize that you can't swim every day even in this glorius Florida weather. :highfive:

I would love to have a indoor pool but, ONE indoor pool for how many people in Jan/Feb/Mar. It would be like fitting 50 people in a two ring blow up pool. You think saving chairs is bad, put in ONE indoor pool and see how that goes. Yep it would be a better move to put in a gym like lifetime fitness with classes, indoor pool, and machines. $49.00 a month.

Personally, I will not be one of the people requesting an indoor pool. I think people would pay to use it in January maybe but that's it. I also don't think there enough people to support an indoor pool....but that's just my opinion. I swim outdoors in any weather, no problem

I'd like to use an indoor pool in the summer. I hate all that sun and sunscreen. Seems like a way to prevent skin cancer if you ask me (I realize no one did or will). At this campground we like they have this lovely pool that is half outdoors and half in and I always keep myself in the part that is under the roof, even in the summer months. Just easier for me with my fair skin not to worry about wearing a hat and keeping covered. Not sure if I'd pay for a yearly membership though if it came to that. Maybe but it might be nice to have the pool to myself in July.

There are many commercial retractable and fixed pool roof systems on the market.
People who don't swim for exercise and just float & soak do not understand what rigorous aquatic exercise does for a person, and apparently, they don't want to.
It's pretty sad when people who have 40+ golf courses to use for free refuse to even consider others, and the real need for at least ONE centrally-located sports pool to be at least under roof, from which solar assistance could help heat the water. The frame could also have removable sides for the summer.

I have been going to Lake Rehab in the Sharon Morse Building since January. I use a small warm pool for knee therapy. Located next door to the small warm pool, is a large indoor pool which hasn't been used for years. I've been told the pool is closed for "political reasons". Strangely, the pool appears to be in good shape and is treated weekly with chemicals.

I would favor this approach to the "indoor" pool discourse until the true usage can be established and a financial plan developed
In winter, a resident must pay $57 to golf Palmer; $39 OBH. Let's just use $50 as average (in prime time of day too). In summer we can play any of these for $6 after 5PM. A little more earlier in day.
So ask yourself, would you pay $50 for 4 hours of INDOOR pool use in January? And, no you can't buy it at $12.50 per hour; just like golf where you must pay for 18 holes in prime time, you must pay for 4 hours at the pool at a time.
I'm not saying I think it could be done for $50, just looking for some perspective. I actually think it would be more!

De Lis .... The pools are (supposedly) all heated to 83/84 degrees. However I've been to more than one pool on the same day, and there is a huge temperature variation from pool to pool. Our local adult pool was way too cold for a while. People complained and they found out the heater was broken.

Downeaster, as golf2140 stated, an indoor pool membership was tried and there was not enough interest. And Angie, to answer your question, no it was not 1965 but approx 2009 or 2010. As Barefoot stated, there's already a perfectly good indoor pool here in TV, but no one wanted to pay to use it. Swimdawg, maybe you should investigate with the owners of this pool what it would take to make them re-evaluate their position and re-open the pool.
While building your wish list for the 2012 annual survey, please consider asking for another bowling alley, and widening the Morse bridge.
I may be dreaming but I seem to remember reading something about plans for another bowling alley in the Brownwood area, so that wish could be a possibility. The Morse bridge, not so much. I think you have to go to Sumter County for that one.
What no one has mentioned is that there are only six more executive golf courses planned to be built. Do you think that's gonna be enough?

Are you the conductor?
Good question, Posh. I am not smart enough to conduct anything. You might call me a "gandy dancer".
Who is the someone you feel will provide an indoor pool?
Frankly, I don't think anyone will provide an indoor pool. It would mean a big investment therefore fees for use would be prohibitive. It was tried once and had to be abandoned as mentioned earlier in this thread. I would think it would need to be golf cart accessible and that probably involves the Developer.

The need is for lap swimming and exercise classes (sport pool of maybe 6-8 lanes), not a neighborhood adult pool. The need is also year-round, not just "February", because of intense sun exposure and skin cancer.
Maybe comparing it to having the weight-lifting and other machines available only outside in the sun and not in air conditioned rooms would get the point across as to what fitness swimmers deal with in the blazing sun....even at 4-7:00 p.m. in spring, summer and fall it's intense. Skin cancer is a real threat.

True. These pools are not just for "dippers" they would be for fitness and for swimmers.

Maybe it would make more sense to open the sports pools at 5:00 AM for those who are truly interested in lap swimming. You would not have to worry about sun exposure. When I go to the pool at 7:00 AM it is not always daylight and the pools do have lights. Many serious swimmers are there at that time. When my husband coached swimming, their practices were at 5:30 AM.

I live in a town of about 45,000. We have a heated pool (93 degrees) indoor that is used by the hospital for patient therapy with physical therapists. The pool is also used by the parks and rec department wellness program for warm water workout classes as well as open pool hours. I use the open pool time to strenghten my back muscles as I have back problems. Cost is $3.00 per visit.
I have visited TV twice and considered moving there, but by not having a heated indoor pool, I decided to stay where I am.

Please fill out your surveys and please think about adding something about how nice it would be to have indoor pools in TV. please
we have one indoor pool for every outdoor pool here in the sun cities. when we first moved here, a lot of people used the outdoor pools but now with all the information about skin cancer, the indoor pools are used more than the outdoor pools here.
you have a great community there. we have visited and we loved it. however, you should have indoor pools - for health reasons. skin cancer is increasing.

Another vote for an indoor pool. Having had four skin cancers, I am very careful about sun exposure so I don't use the pools here much. When we first visited the Villages, I couldn't believe there wasn't an indoor pool (or at the very least a few of the pools should have sun shades over them).

Thank you SunCity and Pat&Bob. It is so much about skin cancer and preventing it.
My beloved godmother died of metastatic melanoma - skin cancer - which is one of the main reasons I'm on a mission to get indoor pools in The Villages.
Questions #20 and #136 are where it would be good to put comments about the need for indoor pools.
And thank you to those who agree that TV is a wonderful place to live...but we do need INDOOR POOLS.

I think the building which houses the pool is owned by "The Villages Operating Company".
The Sharon Morse Building is owned by "The Villages Regional Medical".

Moffitt Cancer Center has a big operation in Tampa and I seriously doubt that TV any financial interest in what goes on there. TV is affiliated with Moffitt, which is great for us - but just because you sell Cadillacs at your dealership doesn't mean you own General Motors.

The need is for lap swimming and exercise classes (sport pool of maybe 6-8 lanes), not a neighborhood adult pool. The need is also year-round, not just "February", because of intense sun exposure and skin cancer.
Once you put in ONE indoor pool for lap swimming and exercise classes, the normal pool users would want one or two for their use also. Don't they get skin cancer also?
And depending on where the indoor pool is built, the people on the other side or further away will want one in their area also.
Do you begin to see how this will grow?
I think it will become cost prohibitive in no time.

People are more educated as to skin cancer these days. Perhaps years ago when TV was first built, residents were not so aware. SunCity indicated that more people used the outdoor pools years ago....but now they are using their indoor pools more than outside pools.
There is a whole new area being built....south of 466A. Now is the time for the Developer to become aware that we would like indoor pools in TV.

While Planet fitness does not have a pool ,its still a great place and only 10 bucks a month

It's not totally about me, Gracie. It's about the residents of TV...and preventing skin cancers....and remaining healthy.
Certainly more people would be able to use pools in cool weather if we had indoor pools.
As I said, my beloved godmother died of metastatic melanoma - a preventable skin cancer. If having indoor pools in TV would save one resident from having skin cancer, I'd be one happy person!
Oh.........and did I mention....to put your requests for indoor pools in #20 and #136 of our Resident Survey? :)

Don't they make sun block anymore?
swimdawg

FMC, sunblock works great for non-aquatic activities. The bad news is that it tends to wash off in the water....and isn't so effective. Too bad you can't ask my late godmother about that. She thought that sunblock would be the preventative to skin cancer. I was with her to the end. It was not a nice death.
Also, having a lot sunblock while swimming can alter the chemicals in a pool a bit...and ultimately make swimming not-so-nice for others.
As previously said, there is a whole new area being built south of 466-A. Now is the time for us to let the Developer know we would appreciate indoor pools.

When we first read about this idea, we thought it was the most ridiculous thing we ever heard of. What a stupid idea!!! We have so many beautiful pools here in TV. Why would we need indoor pools?
Then we read all the posts and it makes so much sense to have some indoor pools. We have so many friends who have skin cancer. Skin doctors in Florida are doing good business. Besides, sometimes it is too cold here in the winter months to go swimming. But you could suck it up for that. The skin cancer thing is why we have changed our minds and we will suggest that they need to build indoor pools.

As another poster mentioned.
AquaShield Pool Enclosures | Front Page | AquaShield - Pool enclosure specialists (http://www.aquashield.com/)
Maybe a portion of the outdoor pools fitted with something like this? More bang for the buck possibly.
I did a little research on this option. The sports pools in TV are considered "Junior Olympic" and the dimension is 73' x 75'. The AquaShield comes in different sizes with 32' being the largest width.

You purposely miss the point. All the pools at this complex IN FLORIDA (where other posters said indoor pools are unnecessary) are indoors, and the water temperatures are warm because it gets cold outside in the winter. They're also inside due to blazing sun and inability to use them during varying weather conditions outdoors.
If there were a YMCA or like facility nearby...not necessarily in TV....I would join in a heartbeat. But there's not one anywhere nearby, much less one that has an indoor pool.

One of the reasons cited for not having an indoor pool when the Wellness Center relocated was the high cost of maintenance.
Secondly just where would you locate this pool? The prime users of the indoor pool at the wellness center were people in need of therapy, etc.
Clearly other residents, without such needs, would be interested in an indoor pool. Would families be included in the use of indoor pools? If so then would we need one indoor pool, two indoor pools, perhaps three or more?
Third, would the amenities fee pay for these pools or should there be a separate charge. Many residents do not use the facilities we have now.
The only facility many use here are the golf courses wherein they pay for champsionship along with perhaps priority. As for executive course they also pay trail fees. To suggest that The Villages invest in indoor pools that most won't use seems to me counter-intuitive

How were people asked whether they would support (monetarily) the existing indoor pool?
I remember that closure of the existing wellness center pool was mentioned in a couple of Daily Sun articles, but that is not a formalized survey in which all TV residents were asked the specific question of whether they would be willing to pay a fee to use that indoor pool or a new one elsewhere in TV.
And as for "high costs of maintaining" the existing indoor pool at the wellness center before it moved........it was probably old with old pumps, heaters, or old chemical injection systems, and like most older pools, it's not worth spending major bucks to upgrade old equipment when it's better to replace it or build a new pool with newer technology.
I think we all know how easily "surveys" get skewed when only a select few people are asked to participate. Mentioning an issue in the Daily Sun while half the population is up north from April to December and they cannot access the full paper online would be a very faulty way of "surveying" whether they are for or against this issue.

Yes. I'm familiar. It took 25 minutes to get there, lap swim time is seriously limited by classes, etc., pool is too short and narrow for laps, and the pool and heater were probably acceptable in the 1960's. There's no way to describe it politely.

The best manner in which to determine the "need" for an indoor swimming pool is to take a survey and include an enrollment form and see how many folks are willing to pay for this pool. The Golf Administration enrolls residents for priority golf that can also include the use of certain pools.
Perhaps that is a starting point in getting this project underway. But I suspect there are a lot of folks not interested in paying for another pool

Maybe but it might be nice to have the pool to myself in July.

How about requesting they add a sidewalk on the outside of the wall on the bridge to Sumter Landing. It would be far less expensive than widening the bridge because it would only have to be sturdy enough for walking traffic. Then they could remove the current sidewalk, and then widen the cart paths back to a normal width. A win-win-win for everyone!

Great idea! We lap swimmers are a hearty lot year round. Lap lanes are full at sports pools at 7 am and many times swimmers need to wait. My main reason is sun avoidance but swimming while watching the beautiful sunrise is breathtaking and a wonderful way to start the day. Little or no cost to anyone.

You want a bubble within a bubble? Wow, talk about Under The Dome!
I remember those tennis bubbles in Montgomery County. In order to pay for the tennis bubbles, you had to pay for the tennis time and that was in addition to the ridiculously high Montgomery County taxes.

We totally agree. We have put this request in our Village Survey response for the last 8 years. Will continue, but do not expect any positive results!

Ah, the yearly "We want an indoor pool" debate. Not going to happen. Period. Too expensive to build, maintain, staff. And you would need many more than 1 for all 100K people!
