A San Antonio H.S. Basketball team after winning, began a chant of "USA, USA, USA" and is called racist by all involved because this team, which is mostly white, beat a team which is mostly minority.

The School District and The School apologized for this "racist" act and all involved are trying to move past this ugly incident of "racist" actions by this team by their racist cheer of "USA, USA, USA".

The "racist" students who chanted "USA, USA, USA" will be banned from playing in the state finals games.

My country has officially gone to hell.

Ok....I'll bite...

What does chanting "USA, USA" after a basketball win have to do with racism? I don't get it...there were "people of color" on the winning team, right?

What is this nation coming to?

This is sad. I live in Texas and have always thought that we kind of had it together when it comes to not doing stupid stuff like this. But then this is the public education system we are dealing with.

We have a cancer in Texas and it is called Austin. Austin might as well be in San Francisco. It appears the cancer is moving southwest and is infecting San Antonio.

I guess the other team not only lost but does not even know they are Americans and LIVE in the USA.

USA, USA, USA, USA

There I guess I am a racist!
I am prejudice against stupid people and I guess they live in Texas too.

If there is not a big piece of racism missing from this story, then some School board heads should roll out of the school for sure.

It sounds like this was a Latino team that lost and the winning team was basically telling them to Go Back to Mexico with the U.S.A., U.S.A, U.S.A. chant.

Maybe, you would have had to been there to really get at the mood of the crowds.
Probably would be good to see what happened during the game too.

There is a big piece missing to this story.

This looks like a Texas and near the border kind of a thing. Not sure any non-Texans and those not near the Rio Grande would get this.

Well don't know about now but it was taught in history class back in my day. Also Remember the Maine was huge too. Besides I do recall some Tennesseans were also at the Alamo. Maybe Mr. Romney could do his Davy Crockett song at a school gym.

I meant the reaction by the school administrators to what happened after the winning game and the chant.

That seems to be what is a Texas thing.

I drove around the Alamo back in 1996 on my way to Palm Harbor, Florida from Sonoma County, CA.

If Romney really wanted to alienate the Latino vote; he should do that. This Presidential Election seems to hinge on that voting block.

All BS!!!

What part of USA, USA says go back to Mexico? One team won, the other team lost. The winnig team loves their country and chanted USA.

They did not say "go back to Mexico" like you somehow have twisted it to mean.
I guess at the Olympics we should chant "sorry we beat you, we are just like you, sorry we beat you, we are just like you" instead of USA.

The part missing in this is how the lefties want this to be about this because it works with their idea of how racist we all are, again BS!

One team got there butts kicked and one did the butt kicking. Get over it.

Wow! We are slipping down the slope at a rate like I could never have imagined.

Listen and you can book it....for the last few years, if you oppose policies of the left for ANY REASON, you are racist, dont care about the poor, money hungry rich, etc.

There is not much discussion about WHY you might oppose.....no conversation on the exact issue.....calling you a racist or whatever closes the discussion !

Why wouldn't they chant their schools name? Chanting USA implies that the opponent is not USA. Get it? :grumpy:

That's a critical issue right now. The eventual winning Republican candidate will probably take a stand one way or another on immigration reform. Obama has tried to take a stand on this issue.

No, I don't get it.
This is an implication YOU put on it.
Could it also imply they just love their country and not hate someone? No because then your belief system that all whites are racist is shaken.
So why can't they say USA? do they not live here.

Apparently one can no longer have pride of any kind without ****ing someone off.
I guess we should get up every morning and find someone to apologize for what ever we might have dreamed that night.
Why do you ALWAYS have to read something into everything.
Would it have been okay if they chanted their school name and USA at the same time?
Yeah, these people, ALL OF THEM, are racist.
Boy you people just make me sick sometimes!

There's obviously more to the story. The USA today article linked by another poster above indicates that the defeated team had been chanting "Alamo Whites" at the winning school student body in the stands.

This reader comment there expresses the opinion of a Texan who sees more of these tensions than we do, here.

"Tyler Barker · Top Commenter · Texas State University-San Marcos
So, let me get this straight. The Hispanic students from Edison taunted the predominantly white Alamo Heights team by chanting “Alamo Whites, Alamo Whites…,” and the Alamo Heights students responded by chanting “USA, USA…,” but it was the Alamo Heights Principal who apologized because the “USA” chant was deemed to be racist? UNBELIEVABLE! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY?!?"

Suppose..... The issue of illegal immigration has been ongong for some time now and is especially a heated issue in Texas. High School kids being who they are with their raging hormones coupled with the high of a big win just unleashed pent up feelings concerning this issue.

Should this kids be punished for utilizing a legimate and honest manner (via competititon) to express their view?

Certainly some folks justifiably would suggest that the winning team should have taken the high road and gone over to the losing team with a hand shake?

But if your a high school kid and you believe that it is important to protect the borders not only from illegal aliens but in fact terrorist, criminals and their contraband that cross over illegally as do adults in that community and all the personal issues that go on in this community well then

Shouting USA USA IMHO doesn't equate to racism. IMHO it amounts to an attention getter that says if you want to live here and compete with us then please use the front door like those who landed on Ellis Island.

We need to settle this immigration issue once and for all and simply washing your hands of it won't get it. Steps need to be taken to legimatize otherwisw illegimate aliens

Anti-American nonsense. The other school was not from Mexico, they were another Texas school.

If the losing team wanted to prove a point they should have joined the winning team's cheer of patriotism for the country that provides them the opportunities they get.

I knew someone was going to believe that pride in country can be racist. It's a bit sickening to me.

I agree with you totally!! Unfortunately, I live in Austin and your characterization is spot on! This place is an absolute cesspool with one of the worst educational (and I use that term lightly!) systems in the nation! There is so much anti-Anglo rhetoric in this town as to make me happy to be leaving it in December after more than 30 years here! Texas is turning into a Third World community and it is very sad! I look forward to becoming a Frog!!

Kind of put your foot in that one, DaleMN.

I took care of a WWII Uncle from Illinois back in 1994. He was a scout (Sergeant?) during the invasion of Italy in September 1943. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_invasion_of_Italy

He and his squad of 7 men or so were scouting enemy positions from underneath some trees. A German tanker spotted them and sent air bursts above the trees. These shell rounds shred anything below them.

6 of his men were killed outright. He and the other man as far as I know were badly wounded.

He lost an arm, a leg, and a good part of his skull.

While I was taking care of him, he would get flashbacks to the war and be right in that fight or some other fight. I guess he had some kind of Alzheimer's that created waking nightmares. These nightmares were more than 50 years after this invasion of Italy.

These were tough to watch. I was helping with getting him around before the family could get him into a local nursing home.

He was a smalltown hero and rightly so.

On the basketball game issue, though, it still seems like insensitivity and racism were very much a part of that game. On both sides though.

And then to attempt to cover it with humor? I do subscribe to the old adage that many a true word is said in jest!!

That was a stupid thing for DaleMN to write; we have all, though, probably wrote stupid things on line that we regret.

A great man I am sure. We are losing our greatest generation. They are slipping from our hands right before our eyes.

On the basketball game issue, though, it still seems like insensitivity and racism were very much a part of that game. On both sides though

I am sure there was. This is South Texas and high school, so no surprises there. It just seems that the school board could have done this without making it seem like one side is against there other, unprovoked.
That is the part that makes it smell!
