Now this story does look like something that really should be a skit on Saturday Night Live. This takes political correctness to the highest level-- of silliness.
Urban Meyer apologizes after gay group objects to lavender jerseys (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2012/03/gay-object-ohio-state-urban-meyer-lavender-jerseys/1)
Most of the gay/lesbians I have met would not be caught dead in lavender. I spent one very interesting Thanksgiving with the Oakland, CA chorus back in 1984. The chorus seemed to have all but one gay/lesbian on it. This was the straight black woman who took me to that party.
There were a lot of gays/lesbians at the U of MN while I was there too. I do not remember any of them ever wearing lavender unless it was their underwear. And, unless you are dating them, you probably would not get a chance to check out what color this is.
I would not call a single lesbian/gay either I have met soft. You would have to be really strong person to be outwardly gay/lesbian.
