I came across a rather dirty westie on Evelynton Loop and Morven Park Way this morning around 9:20. I got a look at the dog tag which has the name Duffy. It also had a home and cell phone numbers.
I wanted to try to get this westie home and call the number but Duffy snapped at me as soon as I tried to pick him up.
Not sure if it is a him though. Duffy could be a female pooch.
Since Duffy tried to bite me, I put him down and he ran west on Morven Park Way followed by another Good Samaritan who had stopped to help out. She followed the dog on her bicycle.
I continued on my errands hoping the dog would find its way home. Have no idea what happened. I do not carry a cell phone so had no way of making a phone call except going home.
A dog rescue person Ann had told me the best thing to do with lost dogs is to leave them alone and hope they find the way home. In Sumter County if you call Animal Control after they pick them up they usually only have 5 or so days to live unless there is room in the shelter for the pooch. That's according to Ann anyway.

Hope the little guy doesn't get injured (or worse) trying to find his way home.

He looked pretty dirty so he probably has been on the streets of Lynnhaven for a while.
There should be something on the Villages radio station if someone is looking for Duffy? The Good Samaritan who was chasing Duffy seemed determined to do something to rescue him. I did talk to her a little bit about helping the westie.
Lots of neighbors were also out and about near this corner of Lynnhaven.

Thanks Tal for bringing it to our attention. That's all we can do for our little lost friends. I hope he finds his home and I hate to hear that he's probably been lost for awhile. Keep us posted if you hear anymore. Thanks again.

It is unfortunate that I could not take him home. I have a dog at home so I did not know what to do if Duffy has not been properly socialized.
I also had my dog in the motor vehicle this morning when I tried to rescue Duffy.
I know a Duffy who is a Westie but he lives way down in Hadley. Duffy must be a common dog name?

I guess it's better being lost in the streets of Lynnhaven versus being lost in the streets of Hong Kong....Hope he makes it out alive.

Please keep us posted on this poor dog. He/she is frightened. Perhaps a piece of cheese will have a calming effect --- enough to get the phone number. When I lived in the DC area, the Westie Rescue went to pickup a "dirty" Westie that turned out to be a Cairn Terrier. This poor little guy had bi-lateral glaucoma. The rescue had to remove his eyes. I adopted him and he lived the rest of his life with love and nothing to fear. He was special.

I'm so glad to see you respond. I thought of you when she mentioned the missing Duffy. No telling what kind of a dog it is when it's all dirty and muddy. Glad your Duffy is safe!

The people (Jim and Linda) with the Duffy from Hadley used to be on TOTV but I have not seen them for quite some time on TOTV. They have a pooch named Hadley (after where they live in the Villages) and a westie named Duffy.
Duffy from Hadley though looks quite a bit different from the westie I tried to pick up in Lynnhaven this morning.
Not sure if I am going to get any more information about the Lynnhaven Duffy unless someone picks him up or the Villages' radio station has something about him.

I'm sorry Taltarzac725, I did not mean to imply you don't know your dogs. I was remembering when we adopted our poodle. Even the Vet thought he was a schnouser mix. Turned out, after a little grooming and a DNA test... He was 100% Poodle.

The Duffy I know from Hadley who is also a westie looked great this morning. So, these are definitely two different dogs.

Talked to a dog owner who lives on Morven Park Way (where I had tried to pick up Duffy the wayward westie) and he remembered this dog and its owner. He is making calls trying to fix this for Duffy and his parents/owners.
Duffy lives about 900 feet from where I tried to rescue him.
I will keep you informed. This Duffy can be a little testy as explained to me by the Morven Park Way dog owner.

Does anyone know what happened with the stray Westie?

I'll ask the friend of whom I think owns Duffy. I talked to him a while back and he had tried to call the owner of Duffy a number of times but got no response.

I spoke with the Doggie Doo Run Run regular who knows the couple who own Duffy. Duffy is home and fine but still a very gruff pooch.
