Hi there,

Could someone out there guesstimate how long it will take
us to go by golf cart to the new Brownwood Square from LSL?
We are trying to decide between an electric or gas golf cart.
We have used an electric cart and just loved it but some
people have told us it would not be suitable for going the
distance to Brownwood. Your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

WCS

30 minutes for 6 miles or so given traffic and all

Just to throw out an example, we often take our electric cart from home to Lowe's without stopping. Hubby says it's a 9 mile trip one way.
No problem.

Hedoman's already got my best estimate - 30 minutes........maybe 35. Depends on how fast you're going in your cart.

Similar to previous response, we take our electric Ezgo from home near Bonita Blvd to Lowes Hardware, way beyond the Historic district up north, and back with no problem. That's 16 miles round trip.

Most electric carts should be good for 30 to 60 miles on a charge. The new Ezgo Hybrid claims 150 miles.

We take our electric GEM from our home in Alhambra to my mother-in-law's home in St. Charles (exactly nine miles) and it takes us about 25 minutes. We do travel on Buena Vista for most of it, so I assume it would take a little longer on the cart paths. Range is not an issue as we get about 30 miles per charge and this trip is only 18 miles. We occasionally plug it in at her house if we are going to do any additional errands when we are down south (like going over to Colony).

electric or gas will not be the determinate of time it takes to get there as the speeds are (supposed to be) fixed. In any case depend on whether you go 19 or 23 in either mode it will be a minute or two difference.

Electric or gas MIGHT enter into what to buy depending on the distances you plan to travel the most.

Hi,

Thanks to all of you who responded so quickly.
We really do prefer the electric cart but a
salesman tried to talk us out of it because he
said the gas ones will take us longer distances.
We really only travel to Walmart and would
probably visit Brownwood once in a while
depending on which stores go in.

For what you do electric will be ok for you especially since you prefer it. You'll be fine. What your salesman was saying was true. Just for the heck of it I did a little computing. My Yamaha gets over 44 mpg and holds over 6 gals of gas. According to Mapquest I could, if there were a golf cart path, make 2 round trips to the Orlando Intl Airport. Also, if I got nervous about being low on gas, I could gas up somewhere or carry a small gallon can of gas with me. You can't do that with batteries.

The Distance available to those driving electric carts will obviously vary depending on the weight being carried, speed, weather factors, (temp, wind, etc) number of batteries incluidng age and quality of maintenance and the topgraphy. I have six batteries and can travel approx 25 miles per one trip and the meter stays on the white (charged) section.

this thread makes me think that it is time for an entrepreneur to start-up a business near town centers for golf cart charging stations! could hire attendants to plug-in and disconnect carts and charge for the service by set time periods.

I think we need to get solar panels on our roof tops and charge while we drive & park in this sunshine.

The prices will come down in very near future.

It seems that The Village Golf carts stores push the gas carts to customers by saying how "The Villages is growing larger all the time & you will want the range of a gas cart". I wonder if there is a dealer incentive to push gas carts.

I have a 2011 Yamaha electric with a 55-60 mile range. Think about it, I average a little less than 14 MPH, that's about 4 hours of steady driving in the cart. I really don't want to spend any more than that in a golf cart & you can easily drive the length of The Villages in an hour. I usually drive mine 350-400 miles per month. Never had a problem. I think that time in the seat is more important than distance. I'm in Buttonwood & Brownwood is 1/2 mile further than LSL for me. If you like electric, stick with it, ignore the naysayers.

We are living in Summerhill now. My husband drove to our lot in Sanibel today. It was 10 miles.

I have electric. When I first got it, I used my GPS to track a trip that took me about 4 hours and logged 47 miles. My butt was wore out, but the batteries were just a fraction under the half charge on the meter. I would guess that the second half would go farther than the first, but I will never again drive a cart for 47 miles in any one day. I have a work shop in my garage, and did not want to smell that comes with all gas carts to be in my shop. I do not smoke and I am sensitive to stinky smells.

From 466a to LSL is around 3 miles and took me 20 minutes. It seems that from 466a to Brownwood is another 3 miles so in simple Math I would say 40 minutes round trip.

Penquin, you are only averaging 9 MPH! I suspect the error may be that it might be more than 3 miles to LSL. The time sounds about right.

Only 3 miles from 466a-piece of cake (good thing I have that rescue service).Start from around the Colony Plaza and you're around 5 miles. However, again using Colony Plaza, the distance to LSL is about 4 miles and SS is about 7 and it's ever further using your 3 mile point. I guess the 3 you mention isn't all that bad after all if you look at it in this perspective. FYI the figures I quote were obtained using Google's bike setting which shows route, time and distance of the golf cart paths. Here's one sample:

LSL to West GC Tunnel on 466a - Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=SS&daddr=3 Mile Point&hl=en&ll=28.886166,-81.972427&spn=0.076655,0.154324&sll=28.916222,-81.972084&sspn=0.076633,0.154324&geocode=FQgVuQEdAC4d-w%3BFbByuAEdSukc-w&oq=Aberdeen+Run&dirflg=b&mra=dme&mrsp=0&sz=13&t=m&z=13&lci=bike)

Not yet but if you stay on the East side trail of BuennaVista thet will take you all the way down to the square, As for the tunnels going under BV they take you to the Villages on the West side of BV.

We own an EZGO electric cart with 4/12 volt batteries. We live in Pennecamp and routinely go to Spanish Springs ow Walmart on 466 and back with no issues with range. Round trip to either locations is approx. 15-18 miles and the battery meter shows about half energy used. From Pennecamp, Brownwood is closer than SS so we should have absolutely no range issues going to Brownwood.

Shimpy your right, I recently got a bicycle GPS and stuck it in the golf cart. I went from my village of Sanibel, south of 466a, to Lake Sumter Landing and it was 5.1 miles and 18 minutes. You must have liked Math.

For anyone wanting to see how far it is to anywhere in The Villages or wherever. This interactive map is the best I've seen. You can track your trip in TV using the multi-modal paths. It even takes you the actual path around the gate crossings & tunnels.

The rule of thumb is 8 - 6 volts is the best. More batteries means more stamina. Not sure why. I have 7 6 volt batteries for a total of 42 volts and they can last longer than my butt cheeks can last. I can go approx 50 miles on a charge before I get to the 80 % gone area. I have been told not to go below that 80% gone charge as it is hard on the batteries.

The more lead, the more capacity. 8 6v batteries weigh more than 6 8v batteries and more than 4 12v batteries

6x8 is the most common, the 8v have either 170 amps or 190 the 190's will go further but cost more.
8x6 will have more amps each about 225 amps but you are carrying more weight maybe 150lbs, the weight can also cut your range.
That setup has reported about 10 extra miles in range, most carts need to modified to fit them.
4x12 is saving weight the amps are about 90. Cart makers tried that setup but went back to 6x8.

Now gel are better but perhaps double in price.

LIPO batteries are far superior but now the cost is too high about $2,000
In the future that price will come down???

The majority of carts are using 6x8v

I have never heard of a 42 volt cart until your post. Sure enough, found lots of info about them on the Internet.
