View Full Version : Colony Blvd and traffic

I don't know if this has been a subject of discussion before or not...but here goes anyway. I went down to Colony Plaza this morning via golf cart and must say the traffic on Odell (sometimes O'Dell depending on the street sign) was appreciably less dense than a couple of weeks ago. That is, until I got down to the intersection where you either cross to go under the tunnel of 466A, turn left on the road to the plaza or right to go to Colony Rec Center. Golf carts were backed up as usual and traffic on the road was pretty busy. I'm wondering how the county (it isn't under the builder's jurisdiction) will address this matter. There will be a bank near this site and probably more commerce as we get larger. I do hope there won't be a terrible accident on this road!!!

Further down is the bank and Walgreens then the road that crosses this from 466A. I've seen cars/trucks blow that stop sign and also some near-miss's before. Than there's the parking lot with ALL the traffic there as well.

Please be vigilant folks, so you aren't a statistic!!!

I agree with everything you said about this. It's only going to get worse. There will be a fatality there in the future. I find one on the big issues is the speed of the cars, its supposed to be 20 MPH. I surely hope something is done be this happens.

a third agreement. Someone is going to get hurt at that crossing. Bad planning on someones part.

I believe I saw something in the POA paper that seemed to indicate that whomever is responsible for that crossing is aware of the problem and they are looking to address the issue. I agree with you......tough to cross in a golf cart.

A first in TV.

A new round-about that will include cars and multi modal traffic. :throwtomatoes:

I'm hoping with the opening and development around Brownwood there will be another Publix in addition to the planned Sweetbay. This should relieve some of the traffic which is mostly due to Publix being so popular. Of course with more development comes more people.

I agree. I love/hate that whole area. I love the convenience, but I don't like trying to cross the busy street, and I've also seen vehicles blow through the intersection near the golf cart store and Beef O'Brady's.

It could be because of the sale at Publix of leftover Matsoh that the manager got a late shipment on.

I echo the PLEASE WATCH carefully sentiments. Please.

We just bought a Cottage in Sanibel and before we picked up the keys to the house we picked up our golf cart. Boy, have we got our priorities squared away or what? On the way from the cart place to the house, with detailed map in hand, I got to that intersection you are talking about, trying to get to the tunnel under 466A. A lady 2 carts in front of me almost got broad sided. Even a temporary 4 Way Stop would help.

Most drive their carts like they drive their cars. Enough said.

-It was brought up at yesterday's District 7 meeting also. They are looking into it. Lots of people are aware of this problem. Let's hope they do something soon.

Living in St. James, there seems to be a void in shopping (grocery especially) in this Southwest corner on 466A. I don't understand why there are no grocery stores located near 466A and Buena Vista Blvd. The convenience of these stores are readily available along the other major streets/area of TV. The Sweetbay near the new town square will still be the same distance if not longer to Colony from St. James Village. Don't understand this planning.

A 4 way stop until they decide otherwise, could save a life.

I've seen folks pull out of the golf-cart lane onto Colony Blvd in front of cars AND carts as well. I believe the possibilities of accidents not only are folks taking chances in trying to "beat" the traffic, but ALSO being inattentive!! This would apply to both kinds of traffic. Folks in cars on Colony Blvd drive way too fast (my opinion)...and I too have seen cars/trucks "blow" the signs at the intersection just past Walgreens and the bank! I've had to slam on my brakes before, when in my golf-cart at that location.

As for the shopping...I'm sure the folks that design T.V. are keeping this in mind for the future as they do their marketing strategies. IF folks over in the S.W. corner (Buttonwood and Sanibel) would be aware...Wildwood has two grocery stores. One is the Save-A-Lot (which is so-so) but there's also another one in a strip=mall further down 301 going south, on the right just past the hwy 44 lights. Also a CVS down there. I think we forget about the other possibilities. On another note...I've been in that grocery store and it's pretty nice. Think it's a Winn Dixie and it seemed brighter and nicer than the one in La Plaza Grande in SP.

Don't worry, the stores will come. Remember that this area is new and just being developed. You were fortunate enough to get into a lovely area at the beginning of the planning stages.

I too agree with what everyone is saying but as we covered all this in previous posts. Again bottom line is for you the driver to operate your vehicle in a defensive manner and never assume that the other guy sees you. I just dont see why everyone gets so up in arms about traffic and congestion. Its just the way it is. Suck it up and drive responsibly and enjoy whatever it is you choose to do. chilout

We were there last week and noticed the back-up, which we had not experienced there last year. I did not feel safe crossing in the golf cart to get to Colony or to continue left to the shopping area. I hope when we return the problem will be resolved.

I don't think you'll see much more commercial development in the cart accessible area along 466A except in the immediate area of Colony and I doubt if Publix would be pleased if a supermarket went in there. Other than that there's not a whole lot of available land along 466A east of Buena Vista. There's plenty on the north side of 466A west of Buena Vista but that wouldn't be golf cart accessible.

And now they want to build a BB&T bank right on the corner where the problems are being debated. Consider it REALLY bad when that goes in. REALLY REALLY BAD!

The developer does not "plan" for things like grocery stores to build near us. They provide the space and opportunity for them to locate near us but the corporations themselves are the ones who will build them if they feel they can make enough money. I feel pretty sure that will happen soon.

If I remember correctly,Sweetbay had planned to be on 466A near the new county building but changed their minds...I am guessing due to the poor economy.

The Publix at Colony is the flagship store of the whole company, grossing more than a million dollara a week, I am told. I am sure another one will be built close to you soon with the building of villages starting now on Buena Vista south of 466A.

Publix can't be a couple blocks from EVERYBODY....

Now Y'all have me scared to death to move to St.James. I had my search down to a CYV in either St.James or Hacienda's Mission Hills.....and I'm very apprehensive about driving...never used to be, but I am now. Folks had said that getting out of Hacienda's was difficult, so I decided on St. James. YIKES !!

Don't be scared...I love living in St. James. It is in the middle of Sumter Landing and Brownwood. It is a great location I live right near the CYV area. You will love it! I am just hoping that a grocery store will be built near the corner of Buena Vista and 466A. There are so many pluses living in St. James.

Even a temporary 4 Way Stop would help.

That would improve the situation, but is confusing to some people as to who's turn it is. I think a traffic light would work.

As a bicyclist and car driver everyone needs to be careful here. If you come out of the lot with citizens on your right (where you can go straight out to 466a) please be doubly carefully..i noticed that visibility isn't that great. I tend to double check before pulling through that area. I expect that may be the accident spot waiting to happen (walgreens/first citizens intersection)
