Hi Martin5400! Welcome to the forum!
For me, the best exercise is done in the water. Serious exercise focusing on the core muscles (back and gut) has strengthened my body without doing damage.
You may know that we have water classes here that are free to residents. The one I go to uses water dumb bells, noodles and exercise bands and is open to men and women. We attend three mornings a week, for 50 minute classes.
Focusing on perfecting my form rather than counting repetitions has been the key for me, so no matter what type of exercise you are inclined to enjoy, I think that tip may serve you well. If I can only do 4 reps well, for me it is better than 8 sloppy ones to keep up with others.... I get more out of it and it's safer too.
Good health to you!

A very good, low impact exercise for overall health is walking. Walking is recommended by almost every health-oriented source in the world.
(It's fun, too!)

Muscles.... If you ask any trainer they will tell you that you build muscles with weight and reps. The more reps the better then you move to more weight and more reps. Its weights every other day and cardio on the others.

Heaven knows I'm the last one who should be giving advise in this area, but I've always heard that resistance training (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistance_training) is the best way to strengthen muscles. Thought you'd like to read the link I've provided to at least learn more about it!

2. Water Aerobics
3. Badminton
4. Tactfit bodyweight workout
5. Indoboard for balance and FUN

Barbell and or dumbell culrs are great for bicept toning. Hope you are doing more than curls if you are weight training for toning the other muscle groups?
Running? Not for me anymore. Don't like the pounding. Are you running on the hard streets?

Yes, I much prefer running on hard streets. The grounds in parks or grassy areas are not consistent - a good way to twist an ankle. Barbells are better because you use can them for forward lunges and overhead presses - much better than dumbells.
Different strokes ......

The two most basic strength building exercises of which I am aware are squats with a barbell on one's shoulders and bench presses, the former for the legs and the latter for for the upper body. If one wants to build muscle strength one needs to up the weights and reps over time.

If I had to pick one exercise for muscle development and strength it would be the Push Up.

Before you even get to the gym make sure you have your weight training exercises (http://www.adamprowse.com.au/) organized out. You cannot get there and just side it if you want to see serious outcomes.

Hi Martin, Welcome!
The very first thing you should do before starting an exercise program is have an examination with your doctor and tell him/her what you are planning to do. All of us here at TOTV are well-meaning but for the most part are not medical professionals.
You may have some kind of health issue that you are unaware of. So please be sure you are healthy enough to exercise before you start. Next, start slowly! And I mean slowly! As some previous posters have suggested, swimming or walking are great for us wrinklies because they are gentle on the bones, joints and muscles.
So sign up to a beginner swim class or exercise class or some such. It is imperative that the class trainer know that you are a newbie and if you have any medical conditions.
Then, a little at a time, have more and more fun!
Best wishes to you on your new exercise expedition!

:agree:
I would join a gym and ask fitness personnel what is best for you to achieve your goals.
Best of luck and :welcome: to TOTV.

Train don't Strain.
Stretch to loosen up muscles (If it's good enough for professional athletes why wouldn't it be good for YOU?) progressively increase workload
Pools offer wonderful resistance yet aren't so challenging to joints and tendons.
For a great overall work out in your home consider KETTLEBELLS (don't start out with too much load) Kettlebells will work your entire body and address muscles your may have overlooked.
Don't overlook the old standby's walking/ bikng/ swimming. and soon you will look in the mirror and see:super:

Stop by MVP and work with a personal trainer. You will not only get more out of your work outs you will be taught on how to protect the body. I see far too many people improperly using equipment and I am afraid they are going to hurt themselves

Actually the rule of thumb is that more weight with fewer reps builds size while lower weights and more reps builds strength.
But you're correct. If building muscle is the main goal weight lifting is the best exercise. I don't disagree with anything that anyone else has said. Walking, bike riding, swimming and everything is great for aerobics as well as muscle strengthening, but weight lifting will develop bigger and stronger muscles faster and better than anything else.
