Last evening we were driving our cart on Canal St. past Bogart golf course. A golfer was across the street from the course, where apparently his ball had landed, so he was going to hit it back across Canal St. to the course. He wasn't bothering to look behind him for traffic as he was getting ready to swing. We just made it past before the "deed" was done!!! We were on the same side of the street (going south? or East?) as he was, with his back to traffic So..golfers, thoughts on this one!

It was a three stroke penalty from there...strokes and distance. ;):ohdear::popcorn:

Edited. Do some of you REALLY think I was serious??????

Sounds like his golf game and his thought process are equally fragile.

Another reason for Defensive Driving (on the road or on the tee)...

and unfortunately representative of someone who has NO knowledge of the rules of golf.

And or is one of the small number who think the rules do not apply to them.

I prefer the first.

Ignoring the fact the person was about to endanger people by hitting without being sure the shot was clear.... the actual rule depends on the local rule which I do not know for that course.

The ball technically is NOT out of bounds by the rules of golf if it is on course property. I am assuming he was back on the course property across the street. You would need a local rule to address this.

This exact situation is addressed in decision 27/20 at the site:

USGA: Handicap Manual (http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Decision-27/)

Public Road Defined as Out of Bounds Divides Course; Status of Ball Crossing Road

Q. A public road defined as out of bounds divides a course. A ball crosses the road and comes to rest on the part of the course on the other side of the road. Is the ball out of bounds?

A. No. Since the ball lies on the course, it is in bounds unless a Local Rule provides otherwise.

However, because it is unfair that a ball on the road is out of bounds and a ball beyond it is in bounds, it is suggested that the following Local Rule should be adopted:
"A ball which crosses a public road defined as out of bounds and comes to rest beyond that road is out of bounds, even though it may lie on another part of the course."

Who cares about the rules??!!? We're talkin' about an executive course ON CANAL STREET, for cryin' out loud! There's no paycheck at the end. No title, no trophy, no Green Jacket. How about a Common Sense Rule to keep the flow moving and everyone safe!

It was dumb enough he even tried crossing Canal Street. All to save a $2 ball, I bet, that he wrestled away from a gator somewhere.....

I may be confused but the only hole on bogart that may be classified on Canal is the first hole and golfers are facing away from Canal. so it may be that the OP meant Becall. The 6th hole on Becall ends at Canal and golfers have to transverse Canal to get to the 7th hole. so perhaps it was the 6th hole. Why didn't the starters hold up traffic so the guy could have made his shot uninterrupted:1rotfl: OK not that funny.

Right you are, I got the two mixed up. I was thinking the ninth at Bacall. Maybe a little snapper from the tee box that ended across Canal.

"Folks could you hold up your carts please, he has a shot to break par today".... it is a little funny

A couple of weeks ago I had just gone through the Largo gate headed for LSL in my golf cart when a golf ball suddenly appeared in front of the cart and ran down the road ahead of me. Guess I'll take an alternate route another time...or wear a helmet? Not that I haven't done something like that myself (many times) and worse...
