I am wondering about the prescription policies of Villages' area vets? Do they charge for a dogowner who gets the prescription online from some vendor? How about if you take the prescrption to a local pharmacist? Is they any fee for the vet's trouble of calling the order into the pharmacist? For signing the faxed sheet from the reputable online pet medicine provider?

Just doing some research on the policies of the local vets about extra fees charged and the like.

Why don't you keep your money local?

If I was a vet I would charge you for a script hands down,

What I suggest is asking the vet what they sell it for and tell them what you see it for online, can they match or come close the price.

Now if you don't support the local vets and they aren't in biz at 3AM when your dog is in trouble, then you can support the local crematory.

No you can't do that online.

think about it.

Not very responsive and rather cold-hearted, but thanks anyway.

My vet's secretary I talked to this morning said that their policy was that online pet pill providers would send a fax to the local vet's office who would then sign the fax and send it. I suppose a fee in this would be reasonable. Faxes do cost some money.

The other option was that a local pharmacist could fill the order after getting the vet's OK. In that situation, I do not really see a fee as being all that reasonable. The secretary would be basically just looking up my dog's record in the computer.

Jimbo since I have been dealing with a very sick dog for 13 years I can tell you that the vets I've been dealing with do quite well without the added benefits of prescribing and supplying meds. That's like saying I should feel bad if my physician isn't getting a kick back from the meds he/she is prescribing. Your remark about the crematory is rediculous and offensive. The reason 24 hour emergency vet services are offered is to fill a demand and make $. I've noticed that the vet's here in TV are quite busy with more offices opening up and I haven't noticed any going bankrupt.

Tal, if I can get the meds my dog needs online I wouldn't hesitate for a minute. Good question.

We ask our Vet if there is a generic version of a human drug that would work and then fill it at Target or Wallmart:spoken:

Actually, I priced the prescription I need for my pooch and it is available at Walmart. Just have to check now with the vet if the generic version of the drug is OK for the dog.

What we have found with our vet is for our dog to get her Rimadyl the online pharmacy will fax a request and get back a signed script from the vet. Just this am the vet called to tell us the results of our dog's recent bloodwork showed an infection. She told us we could buy the two week antibiotic supply from her but if we wanted a script to go to Walgreen's and save maybe $50 she would be glad to do that. Both services are currently free.

We go to a local Vet for our yearly pet examinations, shots and blood work; and any other service we need, such as teeth cleaning.

We buy our pet medicine from Pet Meds online. We use Revolution for fleas, ticks and heartworm. Our Vet faxes the heartworm prescription to Pet Meds, no problem.

Thanks for the responses. My dog was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur and now requires a prescription as long as he is alive for enalapril.

I did see enalapril on the list of drugs offered by WalMart on the $4 plan.

Does that $4 plan apply to pets? I was under the impression that it was for people with a hardship and would not apply to pet meds.

We get some meds for our girls from the vet and some from CVS. Lately, we have had to get some special eye meds from Taylors Pharmacy. I have no idea where they are, but the Vet. Opthomologist gave us the name and phone number. They are a compounding pharmacy and will usually prepare the meds and have them FedEx'ed overnight with no additional charge.

As for the on line pharmacies, we have never used them, but were told that they will sometimes send meds that are near the expiration date.
