Coming home from Sumter Square I passed a gator only a foot away from the golf cart path on St. Charles just before Pennecamp Drive I reported my findings to the golf ambassador and when I left he was parked a few feet from the gator waiting for assistance. He suspected the critter was trying to cross the road to the lake on the other side of the street. Not sure if the golf course was Bonita Pass or Cane Garden.

There are several photos floating around amongst my contacts of a Big Guy exploring the neighborhood just inside the Sunset Pointe gate earlier this week. I'm guessing better than six feet!
The Cat tries to catch the little anoles. I'm hoping that our somewhat raised lanai won't tempt her to chase after a 'gator!
I think he may have been searching for the girl 'gator who was seen in Belvedere last year!

Yes Steve. This feller was big...maybe a 6 footer. I just hope they don't destroy him as rumors say happens when a gator strays. I had to report it before some jogger or walker was attacked

He hasn't chosen his club yet. He's just looking before he decides. Most likely he will need a long iron and make a Bubba type recovery shot. He appears to be way off course.

My neighbor up here said maybe a ocassional Skunk Racoon or Woodchuck in the back yard isn't so bad after all!
I'm thinking its a young male looking for a date!
Or its a young male sitting outside the house saying " Here Kitty Kitty come out and play"
Let me guess they are protected and you can't shot it! Right?

Now I know I'm a gonna get Skyguyed + on this but I have a dumb question.
So you walk around the corner of your Village Home or the Golf Course and there you are face to face with Mr. or Mrs. Gator!
I would think turn and run like H-- the other way or does that make a Gator wanna play go fetch the white meat?
And the answer is?

FRom what I hear, a gator can run up to speeds of 20 MPH for a short distance. I think it is best to CALMLY walk away.

They say the best thing to do is to run away in a zig zag pattern. My nephew, who fought in Iraq, confirmed that is also his strategy in combat, or "when running away from cougars in a bar". :)

alligators do exhibit a natural fear of humans so backing away slowly should do it, their jaws can exert 300 psi however....

From what I understand, if you ever come in contact with an alligator, and he decides to chase you to get a little snack, you are supposed to run in a zig-zag pattern to get away. Alligators can't make those sharp turns and change directions and generally will run in a straight line.

Frogs are the Appetiser, Dogs are a Scoobie Snack!
I got this down. When faced with a close Gator Stare Down.
1: Stand there and wet myself
2: Serpentine
3: Run Zig Zag!
4: Move 90 Degrees Fast
5: It is not a John Deere Gator, you cannot drive it
6: Do not try to deal with the Gator. It will cost you a Arm and Leg

run in a zig-zag pattern to get away.
Run Zig Zag!
I've tallied the votes.
Three votes for backing away slowly.
Three votes for running away "zig zag".
One vote for pee, a really bad solution!
So ... you can either back away slowly and if he starts chasing you, run like hell in a zig zag pattern.
Or you can carry a stuffed toy bear everywhere. If chased, throw the bear to the gator. That will buy you time to zig zag home and breathlessly log onto to TOTV to tell us your story.

Yes, it is mating season for the gators.
The puddles out back of our house have turned into large ponds after the rain last night. Gators travel through the irrigation pipes, especially during mating season. In six years, only one gator has been briefly spotted in back of our house. But Yikes, it's way scarier than those little snakes!

In reading these posts, there was something stirring in the back of my head about the title of this thread. This morning it finally came to me and here it is... my adaption to "Cradle on the Water!"
I would suggest you play the music to this song (Click Here (http://youtu.be/Nc2fldSLOXw)) as you go through the lyrics: (Go back to this tab for the lyrics when the Youtube video starts)
Gator on The Sidewalk
I’ll be your gator on the sidewalk,
my taste for you will always churn.
I know you’re lost and drifting
but the clouds are lifting.
Don’t give up, you have somewhere to turn.
I’ll be your gator on the sidewalk,
’till every wave is filled with fright.
My soul is there beside you,
let this gator guide you.
Soon you’ll see appear before its night.
A cold and friendless day has found you,
don’t let the sullen darkness pull you down.
I’ll paint a ray of hope around you,
when circling in the pond,
with you I want to bond.
I’ll be your gator on the sidewalk,
this hunger inside of me will grow.
Keep holding on, you’ll make it,
here’s my claw so why not take it.
Look for me, reaching out to show,
as sure as emotions will flow,
I’ll never let you go.
I’ll never let you go.
You’re way too yummy to let go...
