Anyone have any experience, good or bad at Sonny's BBQ at LSL? Looking for really good ribs and don't want to waste my time or money on mediocre!

They're ok, but Oakwood is better.

I agree with the previous poster. One of the best brisket sandwiches I have ever had was at Sonny's in LSL. For other choices in the area, you may want to check out the Villages gourmet club at
The Villages Gourmet Club Restaurant Review Site (http://thevillagesgourmetclub.com)
I also have found the website "yelp" to be very good for restaurant reviews in the area.

I liked Sonny's and wasn't impressed with Oakwood. A lot of the opinions depends on what style BBQ you like.

I agree that Oakwood is slightly better, but that is splitting hairs IMO. Sonny's ribs are very good, and this is from a Kansas City native, (many people argue that KC has the world's best barbeque). The Thursday nite all you can eat rib deal at Sonnys is a winner.

Woody's on 301 is the best, IMHO

We have never had a bad meal at Sonny's in LSL.
I can't say the same for the other two places mentioned.
I love the ribs at Sonny's - but only the baby backs. :MOJE_whot:They fall off the bone and you get plenty to eat. The others are not quite as tender....

Sonny's at Lake Sumter Landing has excellent baby back ribs, Oakwood's are also excellent as are Cody's at Lake Sumter Landing.
Hey, I like them all!

Our whole family went there a few months back. My ribs were good but several family members had ribs so tough their knives wouldn't even get the meat off the bone! When staff was told about it they brought new knives. Not real impressed :(
But based on the reviews here, we'll be giving Sonny's a try. Thanks everyone!

I was told when I first moved here (2 1/2 yrs) that Sonny's wasn't very good, so I've never tried it. I like Oakwood, but there are much better ribs near TV (Woody's, Sugar Boo in Mt. Dora, to name a couple)

My husband, the Texan and BBQ purist, is very excited about a new Texas-style BBQ place opening soon on 27/441 just south of 466. He's talked to the owner who is bringing true Texas-style BBQ here. (My husband doesn't like Oakwood at all, he prefers Sonny's. I'm quite happy with Oakwood, but then I'm from Connecticut).

You should at least try it. Your taste buds might have a better liking for Sonny's than other people.
I am game to try any place once to see if it a place that I would go back to.
I never depend on other people's opinions when it comes to food.

Went to Sonnys once for the all you can eat ribs...asked for a reorder and received ONE rib. Hmmm...asked the server if ONE rib on a reorder was the norm. He said that when I finished it he'd bring another. We were avoided like the plague. Got the bill...paid it...never went back.

Wow, you got the wrong server. We have been to Sonny's for all you can eat ribs several times, and always treated well, with all the delicious ribs we wanted.

Aghhhhhh that's just so not right. If your a business playing by that rule don't advertise all you can eat.
The guys I ride with would sit there take up a table and make him walk his tail off bringing one rib at a time.

Okay everyone, we went to Sonny's and tried it. Since so many of you replied pro and con, we thought an update was in order.
The Baby-back ribs were very tender but a little tasteless. They have four table sauces to put on the ribs and they definitely improved things. Fries and baked beans very good. Garlic bread boring with little butter or garlic. So all considered, I'd go again, but would probably try another place first just for fun and comparison's sake. :icon_hungry:

I'm originally from North Carolina, the BBQ "capital of the world", when I got a hold of Sonny's Baby Back Ribs, I put them at the top of the list. Absolutely the best I've ever eaten, and I've been there countless times.

I've been to several Sonny's (North Carolina, Tampa) including LSL. Consistent everywhere and the LSL Sonny's has a very personable greeter at the door.

Oakwood ribs seem to be greasy and underdone for our taste!!

Pork that is pulled easily from the bone and the bone appearing dry means the meat was overlooked or maybe even boiled before grilling. At least that is what they taught us at KCBS BBQ judges school. But it hardly matters. Ribs are very subjective to individual tastes to judge. If you like your ribs pulling off the bone then by all means continue to go to places you

My son-in-law in Ohio (southern born and bred) wants me to get dry ice and ship Sonny's to him in Dayton, OH. That is a pretty good endorsement, however, we like Oakwood ourselves......

I always thought St Louis ribs was the way they cut them. They get rid of the meaty part at the top. They go from the knuckles to the bottom.
Or are you talking about St Louis, Mo?

I have never had problems with Sonny's ribs. I only eat the lunch order - 3 ribs because I no longer can eat a half or full rack. The only time I have a problem is when I get the end of the rib and the end piece is always overdone. But that is seldom. Anyway, when I get the end I get four ribs so at least three are good eating. Very meaty.
I like them dry (as opposed to cooked in sauce) because I can avail myself of the various flavors of sauces they have.
If I have one complaint, it is that they do not carry the mustard sauce in a squirt bottle. I hate the little packages of mustard sauce.

St. Louis ribs (spare ribs) are larger and meatier and they tend to have more fat.
Baby backs (loin ribs) are a lot leaner.

St. Louis ribs (spare ribs) are larger and meatier and they tend to have more fat.
Baby backs (loin ribs) are a lot leaner.
This is what I found on Google:
Pork ribs that are taken from the whole spareribs of the hog, which have had the brisket bone and some meat surrounding it removed so the cut appears more rectangular in shape. When this cut is processed the small tips of meat trimmed from the ribs are available as Brisket Bone Rib Tips. In comparison to whole spareribs which can weigh up to 5 pounds, the St. Louis Style Sparerib will most often weigh up to the 3 pound range.
If you go to Publix and look at the St Louis style rib pack vs a full rib pack, that is what they look like - rectangular with the top part removed.
Personally I like the top part. It has that cartilage grisly and fatty but is good chewing.
I also like the baby back ribs at Publix - lots of meat on them.
Anyway, the regular ribs at Sonny's are St Louis cut and they are very meaty. I have not tried the baby back ribs there.

I ate pulled pork at Sonny's a couple of days ago, and also last year when I was in TV. Both meals were good, and my servers were friendly and prompt. I enjoy sitting at Sonny's outside bar and watching the world go by. I love sitting at the outside bars in The Villages. Living in Chicago, al fresco dining is limited to mid-May to mid-September.

we love sonny's . baby backs are great.oakwood was a different style of barbaque, more northern style. we stopped late one day and got chopped sandwichs at woody's . it was bad and no extra sauce.
also sonny's has senior deals from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 6 days a week.
p.s. great french frys.
