View Full Version : New plantings..bushes, trees can be "stressed".

We moved into our new home in October. Some of our new bushes now have spots on them and some were becoming a little not full and not healthy looking. We were told that they were "stressed" from transplanting and needed extra water and fertilizer to make them grow faster and become healthier. Since we haven't had much rain that makes sense. We bought fertilizer stakes and pounded them in yesterday and are giving them a little extra water from the hose.
There isn't much nutrition in the sand that they are planted in and we can't use the sprinkler as often as they need.

The spots on the leaves could be some type of fungus - might require a specific type of treatment.

Last Fall I had this problem with a new shrub. I put a little Dawn dish detergent in a spray bottle filled with water. Sprayed it every few days for a week or two and it is now healthy and blooming. A friend told me the Dawn solution and I laughed. I'm not laughing anymore, it worked.

I don't know about your "rust" or brown leaves. I do know that plantings do go through a stress time after planting. You can use a hose to water them even though we aren't supposed to use our sprinkling system alot now. From doing some "self-landscaping" in the past I've observed that it takes about 3 years for plantings to really take hold and then grow quickly. We've never planted the more "mature" looking bushes and trees that I've observed some doing here, but I'd think that would hold true with them as well.

you can sprinkle all you want as long as you're willing to pay the cost on new plants. McGowan's landscaping told us that new plantings do indeed extra water every day for the first month to establish their roots. I hate to use the extra water, but I'd hate more for my new landscaping to die.

Ours have black spots kind of like what roses get. Our lawn guy says to water at the roots not on the plant. And take out a second mortgage on our water bill because there is a 10% surcharge on extra water.

Doesn't it bother you to have to pay for reclaimed water (from the sprinkler systems)? I know it bothers the heck out of me...(other side of 466A).

What's a typical water bill?

What's a typical water bill?
Very dependent on what type of water user you are. We probably only use about 50-70 gal. of water each per day on average (derived from our water softener in OH that has a flow meter built into it). Some people will use more, some less - depends on how many loads of laundry you do, etc.
TV water/sewer rates can vary depending on where you live.
Irrigation water cost will, again, vary depending on how much watering you do, how big your lot is, and where you live in TV.

I understand, jimbo. I was just trying to give you an idea of how to concoct your own idea of how a water bill can be figured up.
Again, we figure that, for the most part, we use the same amount of personal water whether we're in TV or back in OH. It seems to play itself out that way, too, based on the water billings we've received from TV to-date.

Best to let the frogs chime in with their feedback. Our billed amounts wouldn't be relevant given our snowflake status.

Jim your Avatar picture sums up those looking at water bills after living in the land of cheap water where many of us came from.

Bill am I wrong or did I read in a post that our drinking water costs less than the non-potable water?

Herv, here's that thread:
https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/villages-florida-general-discussion-73/water-bill-51653/
One thing I'd forgotten to put in my post #9 in that thread is the base amounts for each in addition to the per 1k gal. rates:
Water: $8.06
Irrigation: $5.40
Sewer: $11.49

It is a bit high but not a lot of $
In NY we pay for water
Basic Service including 4500 gallons $24
each add'l 1K is $1.25
Many here have septic tanks so no sewer tax on those homes, but average property taxes on Long Island are $7,000-$15,000 if you have sewer it's included.
So with property taxes here <$2,000 it's a breath of fresh air.

Will depend on the value of the house you buy.

Gracie, Being a northener, I expect everything to grow with no problems, except for freezing. But here in Florida, I would think everything should grow with no problems, with all this beautiful sunshine. But not so!!!!! I have butterfly bush for over a year, that was given to me from Virginia. (It looks sad) I also fed it and keep watering, with not really good results. Today, I have two Crepe Myrtle Trees coming (12 ft each) from Fairfield Nursery to be planted in back yard. (275 bucks each). They are really two great quality trees, and I'm very happy with them. I will be giving "tender loving care" to these trees, until I see bird nests in them. hehehehe Anyway, I do know what you mean about some plants having problems, before they really get going. By the way, crepe mytles are watermelon red. Happy planting!!!

Oh how pretty..watermelon red crepe myrtles. Ours are lilac colored...can't wait to see them bloom. Jojo's mom gave me a butterfly bush and it took three years until it came into it's glory. Must not like to be transplanted...but it was bare roots. I love to mess about in the yard!
