Mail pickup

I have a home that I visit about once every 3 months.

I am concerned about my mail pick up. When I come down and find my mailbox stuffed with mostly junk mail, what do they do with the rest of it? Do I have to go somewhere if they hold it?


I am sure I am not the only one with this issue.

I agree. While I get there more often, I wish there was a way to opt out of junk mail. Any suggestions?

It takes a little while to stop but it will stop. I did it and it works.

When I did my first mail pick up ever, they had put all my mail from my small mailbox in a larger mail box and left me a key to get it. I think they just kept filling one of those mail holders with the two handles until I got there. That worked well. I do not think you can EVER get rid of all the junk mail. Companies pay to have it delivered and the post office system needs all the $$$$ it can get to keep it going!

Fill out a mail forwarding request with the TV post office to have all your mail sent to your permanent address. We also left a note in our TV mailbox informing the postal worker of the same thing. They'll throw all your junk mail away. I peered into our TV mailbox after a few weeks - the postal worker had taped across the end of the box so no mail would get put in there.

The forwarding request is good for a year - should be more than adequate to get any 'real' mail squared away.

Excellent point. We have also forwarded our mail and only get things of relevance. I have no idea if there is junk in our mailbox but we are getting our bills for sure!

Good advice Bill. I make it a point to introduce myself to the people at the mail station. An occasional card with a $20 bill works wonders to keep the mail working correctly. I do that at both ends making friends with the mailman up north and the mail station personnel in TV.

Fill out "Change of Address Card" with the Post Office, for Temporary forwarding of your mail. Then get small piece of cardboard, and fold to insert in mailbox, with the words Temporary Forwarding, so it is facing the Letter Carrier in the mailroom. Hopefully this way, they will not put any mail in box. It worked with us. When ready to return to The Villages, do the same for address where you are at. If its less then 30 days, fill out "Hold Card" (Yellow Card) with beginning date of holding your mail, and ending date of your return and resuming delivery. Hopefully this will help. Good idea to get your Carriers name and cell phone number. (This way you can call them, in case of some urgent problem comes up) We have our carriers number, for such emergencies. Same problem here I leave for 3 months and I am on the road (RVing accross the USA). Even when I'm home I only get the mail once a week. I, like most people, do EVERYTHING on the internet. Frankly I'm waiting for them to go under! I have discoverd that they won't hold your mail for more than 30 days. If you don't pick up your mail in like 2 weeks without telling them to hold it they return to sender no longer at this address! And forwarding... Don't do it they are really slow with that.
Lets say your tax bill.... all mail in the Villages goes to Daytona Beach to be sorted so it goes to Daytona Beach and gets stamped (3 days maybe more from MY experience) then it comes back to the Villages where it sits in the to be forwarded bin. When they get around to it (not everyday) they forward it... it goes back to Daytona Beach then it's entered into the mail system black hole where its well you know. I had a card mailed to me from the January 28 and I had it forwared to my location in Hobe Sound FL I got it February 17!!!!!

Thats just catolog service, plus your putting your name out there for other companies to send you something.. I think what they are really referring to, is the junk mail we get on a daily basis, such as free dinners to seminars, (sometimes a dozen in one week) car dealerships etc, etc, etc. What we see as junk mail today, is really revenue for the Postal Service. They need all the junk mail they can get!!!!! hehehe The Postal Service does not forward "junk mail", so my initial suggestion is when you are having your mail forwarded, fold a piece of cardboard into mail box, with the the words "Temporary Forwarding" facing the Letter Carrier, so they can't put any mail in box.
