Does anyone know if there is a reason other than for a decoration for the large star I see on so many houses? I'm thinking it might indicate a family member in the service or support for the military.
I'm not sure. It might just be for decoration. Lots of people use large stars as part of their decor. You can find them for sale in lots of shops around here.

Amish used it as a sign for good luck and most people in the NE use it as such. A decoration that will ward off evil and bring good fortune.
Some say a blue star is for military member of the family serving and is alive and a gold star is for a military member of the family who has passed.

i wonder if folks who use the stars for decorating know of their earliest use:
RowHouse blog: decor, designs, and stylish finds: Old architectural stars (http://rowhousecreative.blogspot.com/2007/10/old-architectural-stars.html)
"Here's a bit of history for why they were actually very useful: Tie rods and these star-shaped "washers" were often used to connect the gable walls of masonry structures. The floor joists would hold the weight bearing walls from spreading, so these were often the solution for the non-load bearing walls."

I can't speak for others but I have had one...used it above the fireplace and later by the front door. I just like stars! The depict my love for my country for one thing. A star was used to point towards Bethlehem and the birth of our savior.....
There are many reasons to display a star! I got mine from a store similar to Kirklands a few years ago.
