I was having my car in for service last week and was told my fuel filter needed to be changed. In the conversation, the service representative said that the fuel in Florida (the south) is different than the fuel in the north...that it is higher in ethanol. My eyebrow went up but he insisted. Does anyone have any information on this?

The service rep is correct...........to an extent. Florida has legislation in place that mandates a higher percentage of ethanol in the fuel than you might find in other parts of the country. See p.39 of the document:

http://www1.eere.energy.gov/biomass/pdfs/current_state_of_the_us_ethanol_industry.pdf

A couple of caveats:

a.) Depending on where you're buying your gas up north or elsewhere, it might have similar concentrations of ethanol. Point would be that Florida mandates the percentage - other states don't......which doesn't necessarily mean their percentages will be lower.

b.) There is legislation being proposed in FL to repeal the mandate for a specific percentage of ethanol blend in gasoline:

http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Documents/loaddoc.aspx?FileName=_h4013__.docx&DocumentType=Bill&BillNumber=4013&Session=2012

However, the current status of it is that it died in committee in early March of this year:

Florida House Of Representatives - HB 4013 - Florida Renewable Fuel Standard Act (http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=47084)

The octane is higher in Fla than in Cal.

89 vs 87 for Reg
93 vs 91 for Premium

Ethanol does clean out and loosen dirt particles in fuel system. New cars are built for ethanol and I do not believe it matters if it is from the north or south. It does matter where you buy your gas. You want a station that sells a lot of gas, so that sediment does not build in their tanks. If you have metal fuel tank try not to let it sit empty too long, because of condensation. (New car fuel system are somewhat sealed, but I still keep the tank almost full ). I do change my fuel filters every 25-to 30k miles
