Moving PODS

Has anyone used a POD for moving to the Villages? I don't have a huge amount to move and by the looks of a POD I may be able to get my stuff in one. Has anyone had good luck with any other type of moving company or POD type moving company?

There have been some issues with PODS in that they try to make you pay an additional fee to get it from either Ocala or Orlando to TV. Make sure it will be delivered to your zip code at the cost quoted, especially if you're building south of 466A.

I used PODS to move to the Villages from NY and had no problems. We did need two large pods to move. The cost was about 60% of what it would have cost to have a standard moving company we looked into it. There was no surprises on the move the cost was exactly as stated.

Yes, I had the same issue with them (south of 466A.) They say that 32163 area code is not their local delivery area. I ended up paying the extra fee because it was better than the alternative, which was renting a truck, driving up to Ocala and unpacking the POD, packing the truck and driving it here. I have both called and written to PODS but no luck getting a refund.

We had a POD, actually from another company and it was called a SAM.

We had our "good stuff" sent in it. The dining room set, a big mirror, our bedroom stuff, nice lamps etc. etc.

We had their service on that end come and pack and boy did they. They covered every surface and buffered everything. I did not think I would see a 200 lb. mirror ever intact again. Yes you read that right... everyone has some strange thing...but it got here unscathed even after being stored three months. (THAT part was expensive, the storing)

We did not have any problem at all. We hired someone here at less than $15 dollars an hour to unpack it and all was fine.

Henry flew back and drove a 26' box truck from Cincinnati with our other not so precious stuff once we got into our new house.

We closed at 12:00. The SAM arrived at 1:00 which isn't the case if you and the POD leave at roughly the same time. Ours was stored outside in Cincinnati all summer and it gets HOT there, but nothing was harmed.

Anyhow, we inquired around and anyone who knows me knows how frugal , um, careful I am with money. It cost more than I wanted to pay but relatively less than some other options.

If you live south of 466A you should inquire about your POD from the Orlando district office too and be sure to ask both about extra charges to deliver there. (I am NOT sure of this) Ocala charges you an extra fee south of 466A because it is a new zip code (??). I think the girls and the posse need to drive up to Ocala and beat the crap outa them.

Thank you for your information graciegirl. Is SAM a national company? I did need someone to unload the POD/Sam, how do you get someone for $15/hour? I also don't have alot of stuff, mostly diningroom set, bedroom set, desk, boxes of kitchen items...etc. I'm trying to get away from renting a truck and driving it across country. How do they ship PODS/SAMS? is it by rail? or truck?

Driving isn't all that bad, example from NY a 16' from Ryder one way is $1050, a 26' is $1500. plus fuel at 10-12 mpg.

You can also tow your car (or trailer to use a smaller truck if it does fit in a 16' as example) If you tow a car you offset gas costs there a bit too.

So it's 1100 miles. Hire 2 men to unload not sure say $200-300 for a day.

gas $400
labor $250

Pods we would need two they are small, $4500

I think either way the stress and aggravation is the same :grumpy:

Yes moved from nashville and pods worked out great! Even had it stored for a month before we arrived and no problems

. Two men...less than 25 bucks an hour for both of them. took four hours. Came from Orlando. Excellent. We gave them a generous tip. Ladydoc who posts on here gave us their names.
