Are small vegetable gardens allowed? (a couple of tomato plants, a bell pepper plant, cucumber plant) I have not seen any in the pictures of homes for sale. I have to think that out of 90,000 people there are gardeners.

Yes, there are certainly gardeners, but few, if any, visible vegetable gardens.

Most cottage/ranch, designer homes don't have enough land for one, for one thing.

Courtyard villas, with their walls/fences and such offer innovative folk all sorts of opportunities for personal gardens of all sorts.

And, remember, that the lifestyle here may quickly over-ride any desire you may have to garden! :a040:

Welcome.

I was thinking of a raised vegetable garden. I'd put it in if the inspiration strikes me. And as the other poster points out, if I choose to allot the time. Isn't is terrific to have so many things to do? :a040:

My mother lives with us and loves to garden. We have a large vegetable garden in a small plot and some container plants also. Last year I canned tomatoes from the small plot. We had greens--collards, mustard greens, spinach, lettuce, cabbage and brussel sprouts over the winter. Now we have green onions, tomatoes (3 almost ripe), green beans, lots of herbs, blueberries etc. Love eating fresh vegetables. And it looks nice too. However, I have learned from being here almost 4 years that nothing thrives in July and August. Hope the photo uploaded.

Plant vegetables in your flower beds instead of flowers.

Be careful. My mom used to live in Sabal Chase and had a neighbor who grew basil in a front garden bed. Community Watch stopped by and told her she had to take it out. This was before they changed to the new policy of responding to complaints only instead of inspecting on their own. Maybe it's different now.

So we can grow weeds but not basil?

We have a small garden with tomatoes, peppers (jalapenos and bells), lemon grass, basil and culantro (similar to cilantro). We make a lot of fresh salsa! We also have a small compost tumbler and we recycle our kitchen scraps to make some great compost.

Interesting about neighborhood watch asking someone to remove basil. I wonder what their rationale was for that? Why is basil any different from the numerous citrus trees I see around TV?

My hubby is a gardener...specifically a square foot gardener. Our garden is abundant with tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, radishes, onions, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, plus herbs of basil, oregano, chives, dill, rosemary, thyme, parsley.

So really only one square foot or do you have many square foot spaces

DH loves to grow vegetables. We bought a couple of large pots to grow tomatoes and green peppers We planted them in Feb and we have already eaten some peppers. Tomates are about a week away from picking. It's too hot in July and august to grow them but will plant another batch in mid to late sept

The only downside to having a garden is the critters that will be attracted. Birds, rabbits and rats.
