HELP --Lovebugs are swarming in the front entryway --not on the sidewalk, not at the lanai, not in front of the garage, but inside the recessed entryway. It is not white and there are no flowers there. Can anyone tell me what to do? Are there any plants that might repel them? A spray of some kind? Snakes?

I am SICK of those oversexed little.....um.....b......bugs.
They get swept off the front and back of our house twice a day. It is the little smiles on their faces that aggravate me. 24 hours only to live and they fly around for the whole time, um, ....getting busy, and then they die.
They could rent a room.

Helen mentioned that the recessed area was not white. Are the love bugs attracted to white?

I empathize with the writer. Reminds me of when I totally freaked over the blind Mosquitos when I arrived at my new home in TV from Seattle at the peak of the blind mosquito season. I locked myself in a bedroom and prayed they would not invade the house when I slept. I am still in post Lind mosquito therapy... I Call it extended Happy Hour!,,,

If you can't beat 'em...
Leave the outside light off at night. I notice a big difference in the morning when the light is off!

Is there anything to spray in the area to encourage them to leave if not die? I was at a pool yesterday and lasted about 4 minutes...they kept landing on me and zooming about. I guess it was all those white lounge chairs. How long do they last - not their life cycle but the whole bunch of them?

Just hang a sign. Saying no love bugs allowed. You act like they can't read.

I haven't seen many this year. Thought maybe it was a lighter season than usual. Gee, maybe that's because I only go out at night??? LOL. http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/nightf.gif (http://www.millan.net)

they occur twice a year.....late april and early may and also late august and early september. each time they hang around for for about 5 weeks. Nothing to do about them except to make sure you remove them from your car quickly as their acidic bodies can damage paint and chrome.

Love Bugs are just part of the fun of living in central Florida. You rarely see them along the coasts.

appears here - lovebug - Plecia nearctica Hardy (http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/lovebug.htm)
Generally, they are attracted to automobile exhaust, particularly after it has been irradiated by UV containing sunlight. They are also attracted to light colors, and freshly painted surfaces.
The best thing I have found for removing love bugs from the surfaces of one's car - glass, painted and plastic - is a Dobie Pad and warm tap water.
Dip the pad into a container (an old margarine container or soup container from the local Chinese take-out works well) of warm tap water, scrub the "insecticide" with the Dobie, and go on to the next one. When done, rinse the relevant area of the car off with a hose. Rinse out your Dobie, let it dry out somewhere in the garage, and repeat as necessary. You can use it for a couple of years before it needs replacing.

Doesn't that leave fine scratches in the paint?

You just have to wait it out. One day they are
doing their 'thing" and before you know it they are gone-only to return again in Sept.! I have the same problem- my broom is always handy.

After washing your car, spray "Bug Block" over the front and grill area, then wipe if off lightly. It is great-no bugs!. Another trick to get the bugs off is to wet the car down then wipe the bugs off with a wet dryer cloth.
