Yes, Virginia, you can break an Apple iPad.

I know; I dropped mine this week. On a concrete sidewalk. Crack went the glass, even though the iPad2 was in a protective cover.

Being that you can't simply get a glass screen replacement, looks like I'll be buying a "New iPad," which is the successor to the iPad2.

Trying to look at this as a "cup 1/2 full" situation (there is less crying that way), here is what I will gain with the new purchase: Better screen resolution, faster processor, better camera, built-in 4g, and voice-enabled outgoing e-mail capability.

32 gigs, $729. #^!€ (you figure out my 4-letter verb).

Ps: Word to the wise. Don't casually carry your iPad. Guards up!

Ugh, heartbreaking. I love my IPAD. Suggestion, they now have the Apple IPAD Care package. If you had it, they would replace it. I bought the care package on the new one as I am a dropper as well. I have the newest IPAD, it is great. Dropped it off my desk at work but it was fine. I did not worry though as I knew they would give me a new one. Just sayin' worth the cost. I am not a warranty person usually but for something so important and fragile, I went for it! Look at the up side, a new IPAD is exciting!!!!

Phyllis, at $729 it was an accident.

I was just telling Kathy 3 days before I dropped it that I wasn't going to buy the "New iPad;" that I would wait until 2013 and buy the newest one then.

Time sure does change things. This time I will buy the "iPad care package." It wasn't available when I bought the iPad2.

Murphy's Law did a number on me this time: I didn't drop my iPhone that has replacement coverage. No-oooo. I dropped the iPad that didn't have coverage. I don't like Mr. Murphy.

I know a guy who dropped his ipad 2 and got it replaced for free at the Apple store.
It was about a year ago, and I don't know all of his circumstances, but he took it to the iphone ER in Tampa and a place called ScrewBox in Tampa...they sent him back to the Apple Store and he go a new one for free.
Sometimes they will do it for good will...worth a try if you don't mind going to Tampa (I presume that is the closest one to you).
I also did buy the Apple Care for my new one...some peace of mind...and I also don't usually buy such stuff...but I have some rough grandsons.
Calling there won't work....you must go in and try...worth the effort if in the area.
Good luck!

Gene, you know Kathy is gonna let you use hers.

Anyway, you wanted the new one.

Advice from one who knows something about your "habits"...............

STAY OUT of Barnes and Noble for a couple of months and you will have the cost of the IPad.

Just kidding of course. Be more careful, bumblefingers! ;)

There is an Apple store in the Altamonte Springs Mall which is closer than Tampa from here.

:cryin2: Sorry about that. I dropped my spouse's IPad in January. Fortunately, it hit my toe. Unfortunately, I lost the toenail. How do you tell your friends you were injured in an IPad accident? :22yikes:

Ah, Gracie. You are SO right. If I could just "alter" my Barnes & Noble habit of buying too much (I go for a newspaper, and I end up buying 2-3 books -- over and over again!), I could save that dough to buy a new iPad.

By the way, Kathy has since hid her iPad from my "hands." Smart gal!

Accidents happen and when they happen with the IPad, it usually means you are looking at getting another one.

When you purchase your next IPad, you may want to consider purchasing an extended warranty with accident coverage. I purchased a warranty on my Ipad2 and my wife's from square trade.com. They offer several options for extended warranties and the cost was less than Apple and it included accidental drops/spills.

Why don't they sell a lanyard so you can wear your iPad around your neck?

OMG! Horrors! I am currently on my IPad and cannot tell you how many times I have already dropped it! But my case is well padded so I guess I was definitely lucky... I am so sorry for your loss :cryin2:
As I will be leaving for TV in just a couple of days and bringing my IPad with me, I think I may look into that extended warranty! I don't want to have to buy a new one until they have adobe flash! Will that ever happen????? FYI- I originally got my pad with 3G but later switched to a 4G MiFi which has been awesome. I can also use that for my PC and laptop! Enjoy the newer version and remember, accidents happen!

Dropping an iPad on a carpet is one thing. Dropping it on a concrete sidewalk is something else (even with a protective cover).

Of course, mine was the sidewalk (Murphy's Law).

One of the first things I did for my new IPad3 was try to find a good case. I tried several local stores like WalMart, Staples and Target only to find empty shelves. I ordered a great padded neoprene case from QVC (E 254598) and feel this will help protect it for travel, car trips and while I'm out and about.

I too dropped my IPad 2 on my tile floor, not once but twice.

No damage thanks to the case. Brand "Incase". Bought it at Best Buy. Cost $40. Not pretty, bit heavy, BUT in my opinion a must. Of course, always keep screen covered when not in use.

If it still works and turns on you can get the screen replaced. Or do it yourself.
It's about $130 to have it replaced or $50. to do it yourself. You can check online, or even just pay Apple to do it. It's less than a new one....

If I did the same thing to my iPhone, guess it would give a whole new meaning to the term "dropped calls".

My Yorkies bought me the New iPad yesterday for Mothers day. I didn't even drop and break my old one.

They told me they are so grateful that I feed them, bath them and pick up their poo-poo.

My Apple store said the glass can't be replaced. Wonder if they're pulling my leg (if so, hope it's my left leg, which is 1/8 inch shorter than my right leg).

Anyway, I'm going to DC for a trip this week, and rather than rush and buy a New iPad (which I will) and worry about transferring everything, etc, I decided to temporarily fix my cracked iPad glass with a see-thru $25 bandage. It works, but it's like looking thru a cracked windshield while driving a car. Not a pretty situation. But at least my fingertips are protected from glass slivers.

And to the doubters <g> that I dropped my iPad2 in order get a New iPad (not officially called an iPad3), I didn't. Honest injun!!
