Hello everyone. We are getting ready to meet with the designers to build a cottage home in Sanibel. I have always wanted white kitchen cabinets. For those of you who have white cabinets, do you like them and have they maintained their color? I have heard that they can sometimes yellow with age.
Thank you.

I have white cabinets. They are about 7 years old. I do like them and they have not yellowed. I wipe them down with a wet cloth every two weeks because if you are a big "cooker", they can get dirty with splatters, etc. Being white, those tomato sauce splatters will show. But, they come clean with just a wipe and look good as new again. And, no, I'm not a slob, LOL

Thanks for the quick reply. And, thanks for the welcome. We are excited to start the building process. What color countertops do you have?
WELCOME to TV!!
I LOVE white cabinets, so I say go with it!
Mine are almost white, very pretty, but I regret not just going with white, as now I realize that I like white better. I selected an off-white, cream colored cabinets, with bead board on the cabinet face, with a dark antique stain in the crevices, I believe the color of the stain is called "coffee".
Enjoy your new place!

I am a blue collar worker and when I saw the white cabinets in our prospective house I dissed it as being impractical. Well, needless to say we bought the house and I now love the cabinets! I'm sick of everything being natural wood. (our old house had natural woodwork, oak cabinets, and we had a lot of colonial furniture) I find the white to be bright and uplifting and they clean very easily. They are seven years old & look great. Go for it!

My counter tops are a light beige formica. Eventually I am going to replace the counter tops and will probably get something more medium in color vs. so light. I just replaced all the carpet in the house with flooring and they are a nice compliment to the white cabinets. I don't think you can go wrong with white.

We had white in a previous home about 17 years ago. They did yellow. But I have been told that whatever they put into those,I believe a plastic, is no longer used and they do not yellow anymore! I currently have my long dreamed of cherry, and when we get to TV will not get dark again! The amounts of dust that shows is amazing!
Congrats on the new home?

I certainly shouldn't be giving anyone advise... but I think if you've always wanted them... By all means! Live your best life and get them!

:welcome: to TOTV.
I've had white cabinets for years in several houses. No problems. My present house I've had for 9 years and they're still clean. Makes the room look larger and brighter.
When selling real estate I've noticed most yellowed cabinets come from gas stoves or smokers (the people kind).

I have had my white cabinets for 10 years, and they have not yellowed. They are easy to wipe down, and I like actually knowing when they are clean -or not. Had dark cabinets up north and never could see whether they were truly clean.
Oh, and I have a gas stove here in TV that has had no effect on them.

The bigger problem with getting the white cabinets is the granite selections in this area are generally geared to be with darker cabinets. Danby marble, the Quartzites, the really white granites and marbles are really expensive. If you have an endless pocketbook, take a look at a quartzite called White Macaubas.

Have had white cabinets in the last ten years (former home) and they were perfect after years of being there. They had a vinyl-type white skin on them that cleaned up great, and it did not yellow.
As for white kitchen cabinetry here in TV.....GET it if that's what you want, and don't cheat them out of their best look by leaving the walls "white".
Some serious color on the walls will make them shine. Leaving the walls "white" makes them blend into nothingness.

Hi and welcome. We have a new home and chose white cabinets. We really love them. They make things look so bright and clean. We have granite counter tops and like them. We were surprised that the granite is so sensitive to wet , hot and cold. Be careful about leaving water on them for any length of time because the granite discolors. It WILL go back to it's original color but looks odd for a few hours. Never put very hot or very cold items on granite as they may leave a permanent stain. I put a warm cooked chicken in a bag, the one Publix makes, on our counter top and left it for about 3-4 hour. It discolored the granite but luckily it went completely away and back to it's natural color. I love the granite, but am mindful that it is a very porous stone.

Make sure you seal it or make sure your fabricator seals it.

When we bought our home last year, I had all the kitchen and bathroom cabinets painted white. I love the bright, modern, clean look. Also, as a side note, I have a color that is ever so slightly off white so it isn't so harsh to the eye - The Villages uses this color in their Lifestyle homes. Enjoy!

I had white cabinets in my last house, I really liked them except they do show everything that splatters and dust would collect in the crevices and be very visible. They gave the kitchen a very bright open look which I liked, I lived in Alaska so it was a pick me up during those long dark winters. I also had glass fronts on 2 cabinets, the kitchen was beautiful and I had black granite counter tops. Now, I am building in the Villages and going with a dark Java cabinet and light quartz counter tops, guess I just wanted a change.. Go for what you love, don't worry about the cleaning.

I am currently building jn TV and chose white cabinets as I want everything open and airy. Plus you can change up your colors easily and have an almost new kitchen! I chose a darker granite that will also go with many other colors. I pland to accent with a colored backsplash (aftermarket) and other accents! Good luck with your choice!

I chose the cabinets called "silk" with the undercabinet lights for our designer home. They are a creamy white. I chose brushed nickel handles/knobs to go with my stainless appliances. The countertop is a medium brown Zodiac which picks up on the color of the hardwood floors in the living room. Love the Zodiac much better than granite, no marks or stains. Had granite back in VA and it was a pain to keep sealed and all liquids and grease do leave a mark for a time. For a cottage home, you may want to go with the white cabinets instead of creamy for a more Florida cottage look IMHO. Good luck with your build!

Wow. Looks like no one is going for the darker look anymore by the looks of this thread.

We had Alpine Maple (very light) for 16 years and when we made our selections for our new home in TV we stayed with maple, but chose a medium brown stain. I think we all want a change sooner or later. I considered white as it made the area appear larger, but changed my mind.

We remodeled our kitchen in Baltimore in 2008 and went with white cabinets, granite and stainless steel appliances. We listed our home for sale on May 18, 2011 and sold it to the first showing on May 19th. Sold in less than 18 hours and the buyer said the kitchen was the main reason. We moved here to a CYV and wanted white only to find they had none available at the time. In CYV's you have no choices, only can buy what is available. We did get natural maple with is very light and is OK, however we did consider refacing our cabinets with white for a short time. Not in the budget right now.

We are considering the 'silk' cabinets in our Designer home, as well, which we hope to build, sometime in 2013. Can anyone tell me the approx. cost of the silk cabinets, as I believe these are an upgrade? Thanks, so much, in advance. Happy trails, to all the very lucky Villagers. I know our day is coming....hopefully, in 2013, to join you all. Until then, I will continue to gather the wealth of information provided on TOTV. Great forum and I appreciate all I have learned.

Toured a model yesterday with an all white kitchen. In addition it had black granite (with a little white in it) countertops. It was outstanding.

We did the white (silk) cabinets and when painted the walls "homestead brown".. A deep chocolate brown.....made the cabinets "pop". love it!

I love the look of white cabinets! They open up a room and are very easy to keep clean. I have had them in my last two homes and will be selecting white again when we build this year. They look beautiful with any color granite.
