Need health care advise

Hi all, We (My wife and I) live in Connecticut and will be moving to the villages probably Aug. if everything go's well.

I talked to a real estate salesman from the area a few days ago and he said medical care including the 200 bed hospital in the villages area was excellent.
I see many unhappy posts posted here. Am I missing something?

We have some of the best medical hospitals in the country within a 4 hour drive here, Harvard, Brigham, Mass general, and Columbia Pres.
I have some major health issues since comming out of a long coma and need quality medical care / treatment etc. I am fairly active and retired .

Any recommendations or advise ??

P.S. We will drive down there the end of next week .

We have some excellent choices here as well. Mayo Clinic, Shands at U of F, Orlando and Tampa hospitals, etc.... all well within 3 hour drive. Also Munroe in Ocala(25 miutes away) is top notch. The Villages Hospital is great for some things, maybe not so great for others, there are some excellent neurologists here as well as many other doctors. Lots of good therapists, etc... here too. Don't worry, you'll find a situation that will work for you.

We've been here for a year now and I must admit that healthcare has been the biggest challenge! As probably everywhere, there are good, bad and indifferent doctors and we just had to weed out a few in the process. We did not want to stay in NC and i can only think we would have encountered the same problems no matter where we relocated. I think we are happy with our current doctors. We did have to make a trip to The Villages ER with a high blood pressure event. We were treated very well during our 5 hour stay. The problem seems to be there's not enough beds nor staff for their ER visitors. We have since been advised to go to the Leesburg Hospital for ER but we are in no hurry to try it!

I would think I might be tempted to go to Mayo or Shands for something really complicated!

First of all there are only 6-10 in the whole U.S.A. that can compare to Mass General and three of them are in the Boston area (Brigham and Women's, Beth Israel, the Lahey Clinic). I'd stay out of the Leesburg hospital as I know four people who have had surgery there and ended up with infections . . . the Villages' hospital is fine for small problems but I'd go to Monroe in Ocala, the Shands (UF) in Gainsville, or the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville for anything major. Monroe actually has a good rating against infections, is closer than the other two and has doctors along route 441/27 that work out of that hospital.

The medical care here is alright, but NOT what you are used to. If you have some serious issues that have been treated there, perhaps you can continue to fly up for check ups.

Excelence is like beauty....... in the eye of the beholder. We have been here almost 2 years and are still trying to find the right Drs. for us. One of the major problems you will find for most physicians in the area is that they have 2 or 3 offices in various locations. If you need to see your Dr. on any given day, chances are he/she will be at one of the alternate locations. If you are a veteran, the VA Clinic at the north edge of TV is very good in my opinion. They have been to me at least. However, if you need surgery, they can't handle it there. I recently had to go to Lake City VA Hospital for surgery on my foot.
