View Full Version : Toll Violation on 528 in Orlando

On my way to TV today from the airport in Orlando, I accidentally drove through a Sunpass lane on 528. I am in a rental car. At the first tollboth on the Florida turnpike I got a card from the toll booth attendant which has the address on which to mail the check for violating the toll. Of course my checkbook is back home in Illinois, so I won't be able to take care of this until I return on 6/17.
Leave it to me to violate a Florida state law within 24 hrs. of arrival. :ohdear:
Anyone know offhand what the fine will be for this? Mea culpa.

Why not just mail them a USPS Money Order?

I don't know but when I was driving south, I was somewhere near Newark airport when my gps went insane. I ended up going around and around and when i realized I was about to cross the GW and go back to NYC, I crossed over a cone divider to go through the toll I had just gone through 5 minutes earlier. The amount calculated for the toll was increased by $12 for a penalty for crossing the cones. In my case, it was worth it. The GW would have been $12.

Thank you for the idea about the money order. I still have to find out how much the fine is. I may check the web site. There is a phone number on the card given to me by the toll booth attendant, but I'm betting that phone number is not answered on the weekends.

Call the number....I had a friend a year ago do the same thing...accept they threw a dollar in because it was unmanned where they went through and they didn't have change. Got a $52 toll violation/fines, after talking to them got it down to $28...not all that sure what was involved but the rental car agency was part of it. :( Basically told them if they had called right after they got home (the number on the website) the charges would have been next to nothing. But they had no idea and felt they were okay cause they threw a bill in :( Live and learn...

First of all, don't pay a dime until the bill actually comes your way. I did the same thing in a rental car and never got the bill. Came to find out that agency had a transponder for that car and it only cost me the actual toll amount ($1.50 i think plus a few bucks for the transponder rental use).

If you went through the toll illegally without a transponder, then the license plate is captured and the owner of the car (the rental agency in this case) will be sent the violation. They will then bill you. The fine for those tolls is $100. There are signs everywhere!

But don't just send Sunpass any money assuming you owe something. I would think you could use a credit or debit card if you needed to anyway.

When I picked up the car at the Orlando airport, Thrifty wanted something like $7 per day to have a transponder in the car. Since I don't plan on using the turnpike or 528 until I return to Orlando in 9 days, I wasn't going to pay $63 to only go through approx. 8 tolls round trip, so I declined buying the transponder. My bad for not seeing the lanes where you pay cash on 528. I did the same thing about 10 years ago near my home in suburban Chicago. I wised up fast and got an I-Pass right after that.

Well I got that fine both ways as I totally missed it in March. The rental car company sent me the bill, two of them, it is in the small print that you have to pay the fine AND the administration fee. You pay it through the rental car company as the bill will go to them. I paid $25.50 x 2!

I ran one on the 408. I have sunpass,, but forgot to put it on the windshield, so it did not pick it up. THey mailed me a ticket along with a photo of the back of my car showing my plate.. the ticket was for 1.50 the cost of the toll. If I did not pay it within the specified days given,, it would add like a 25.00 penealty. That was it. paid the 1.50, all is good.

On a rental,, they would mail it to them reg. owner,,, they would find you.

Send a PM to Bill-n-Brillo. They are on their way home today but he was telling us last night that this happened to him and I don't think anything further happened. Also this happened, I think to Gigene.

Not to worry Laura. Come and see us.

Also...there are no toll roads coming from Tampa and it is about the same distance here and sometimes cheaper to fly there.

Russ is right...they will send the bill to the rental car company. The rental car company will, in turn, bill you. I had the same thing happen to me, on my first trip to TV and I got billed about $7.00 for a missed toll. I normally rent from Enterprise now and they tell you to just go through the Sun-Pass lanes and they will bill you after the fact.

I'm headed to Chicago in a couple weeks and the I-Pass is already neatly tucked into the console of the car... ha ha I hear they have raised tolls recently :(

Welcome back and have a good visit!

I thought if you forgot to use the transponder and you had that license plate registered with the transponder you could give them that info and they would simply charge the account the normal toll.

We rented a car in western NYS. While in Canada visiting family we asked the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The route they gave us was a transponder only toll road - no toll booths. We got a bill from Hertz, toll plus an administrative fee. I thought it was reasonable considering it happened out of the USA with a car rented in the USA.

Yes, tolls in Illinoise went up this past January 1 -- they have doubled. The state of Illinois is just about broke. Fortunately I normally only use the tollway once or twice a month. I love living in Crook County (a/k/a Cook County).

The new state motto...Illinois where our ex-governors make our license plates.

They do that here in IL if you have an I Pass account. In fact, you don't even have to notify them, if/when it comes up they deduct the toll fron your account.

Congrats.... You have to feel good about that!

We sold our last home there in 2008 on a relocation to Germany. Thank God, my company had a good investment protection program, which I used extensively :D

Have a good trip....

That's the way I heard it worked also. First one is a warning only, so wait until you get a bill. You may not have to pay anything.

Go to the sunpass website. There is alot of information on the site including how visitors with their own car or rental cars can temporarily use sunpass options.

I did the same thing. In about a month I got a picture of my license plate and a bill for $3.25. Originally, it was a 75 cent toll. I paid it on-line by credit card and there wasn't even a surcharge.

Thanks Mike. Good trip to you too. We put our place on the market on March 27 and had a contract on May 19. It was priced for today's market which meant we took a hit like everyone else is doing. Being here earlier than expected makes up for it.

Safe travels.

I did the same thing when we first moved to Fl. Just got in the Sunpass lane accidentally and could not move over due to traffic. After a couple of months I got a bill showing the picture of my license plate for $3.50. Paid it online and that took care of it. I was expecting a fine of $100. Was happy to see I only owed $3.50.

Gracie,

I seem to remember tolls coming from Tampa on the Veterans Expressway which starts right at the airport. There are probably better ways to get to TV but it was my first visit so we took the nearest road.

I came back from Tampa a few weeks without any tolls. At least I hope not:)

I am happily envious for everyone who either did not have to pay or paid a few dollars. Dollar rent a car charged me automatically through my debit card before I even knew why $25.50 x 2 as I did the same thing both ways not knowing I had even done it once. There was no discussion to be had, they said it was in my contract and since I refused the toll pass they sell, I had to pay the total $51. I never left TV with my rental the whole time I was there and in fact parked the car except for one trip to Cane Gardens for dinner and used the golf cart I had loaned to me for all my other trips. So I guess beware of Dollar Rent a Car or be smarter than me, or actually, both.

The same happened to me a couple years ago in a rental car the sunpass lane was confusing. The rental car company sent me a bill for $10. Most of which were administrative charges by the rental company. They get the fine in the mail as the owner not you.

Called Thrifty yesterday -- they have a "ticket and toll violations" department. In about 4 to 6 weeks I will be getting a letter from Thrifty detailing the $25 administrative fee plus the cost of the toll I missed on 528 which will be charged to my credit card. Oh well live and learn.

FYI: The woman at Thrifty said that all tolls in Florida will be cashless by January 1, 2013. She said that the tolls in the Miami area are already all cashless. Don't know if this is true or not, just reporting what she said.

Will have to think about this when I return to TV in October as I don't want to pay $6 a day for Sunpass when I may only use 528 and the turnpike when I'm leaving the airport and returning to the airport in Orlando.

You can get a Sun Pass that you can only use on one car. I forgot the exeact fee, but was given a Sun Pass credit for the fee. So, therefore, the Sun Pass was free.

jane032657
06-19-2012, 08:18 AM
Yup, that is what happened to be, twice, once each way. $25.50 for each violation from Dollar rental right on my charge card. It was an honest mistake as I did not understand those side tolls, I thought it was for if you exit there and one I did not even see! But my mistake. No mercy by the rental company.

Schaumburger
06-20-2012, 09:19 PM
If the Orlando area goes to all cashless tolls by the end of 2012, think of all the tourists visiting that are not used to paying tolls and will get hit with toll violation fees by the rental car companies. The rental car companies are going to make $$$ from this.

has anyone ever called the sun pass people to find out if they issue a transponder or other device that can be used when a person drives a rental car? we don't travel that much once we get to the villages, nor would we be likely to rent a car in florida, so i have never had that need to know - might be something travelers without their own car would like to know.
