View Full Version : Really ugly new paint for houses

Over the past few months, I have noticed some really garish and, frankly, ugly new house colors south of 466. There is an orange house, a blue house, a pink house, and today's addition a particularly ugly green house :yuck:. Isn't there some kind of covenant to protect other homeowners from these lunatics? You can't have lawn ornament, the color of your door is managed, but, hey, it's just fine to paint your house an ugly color, totally out of balance and asthetics of an entire neighborhood and it's just fine! :cus:

The colors always look better on the color chip. It is too bad that people don't have the guts to stop the painter when it becomes apparent that maybe the color selected isn't just right. They may have to pay "double" for the paint but at least a corrected color comes out a lot better!
Anyway, some of the colors aren't any worse than what is on a lot of painted driveways or the old and faded driveways.
I guess to each their own.

We're out of towners. We have a lot south of 466. Aren't all the homes in that area newly built? also, aren't the home colors restricted to certain schemes?
We don't think we'd like to be pancaked between a pink and a green house.

I noticed that the "trim" on my house is almost the same color as the base color......maybe I should ask them to repaint it a nice purple or lime green! That would make it stand out a little!

When your house is purple, pink, or orange, it makes it so much easier to locate it after dark!

We live in Sanibel and haven't seen any different color homes here. As the other poster said, I also thought the house colors were controlled. When we built, we could only pick from certain colors and none of them were too outlandish.

Last time i checked, siding was a h*lluva more expensive than repainting.Have not seen any bold or outrageous colors on the new homes.I would love to know the Villages we are talking about, since the developer seems to use lots of neutral colors so he can appeal to the majority of the potential home buyers.

I think some of you are a bit confused. They are not speaking of new homes, they are talking of homes which have been re-painted due to fading. Remember, the paint that is put on all of these homes only last for a certain period with our stong sun.

That explains it. The homeowners, perhaps, got tired of the neutral beige which is the predominant "look" and opted for something original.
To me, it would depend on whether or not it's just "trim" as an accent color or the entire house is orange.
Or perhaps they are from another country altogether....where brights are acceptable.
We were once coming down the coast of Nova Scotia into Peggy's Cove and all along our journey were multi colored homes.......bright cobalt blues, purples, reds, you name it........the Nova Scotians did like their bright colors.........it probably cheered them up during the long bleak winters..........I believe these were people of French ethnicity. We've seen similar bright colors up in Old Orchard Beach , Maine where the French Canadians love to vacation.
As someone else said, "BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER".
I realize it's popular on the HGTV show where they showcase new homes to buy, remodel, etc...........as far as BRIGHT COLORS on the walls.
For instance, red walls with bright yellow accents..........similar to what we saw in Florida. Up here, it's usually boring white on the walls.
Perhaps these home painters are "ahead of their time" with the "look".
We stick with pale gray with all white trim for our exterior.
In Arizona, everything is beige stucco look.
Again, since it is a free country, I would assume that home owners can choose their own colors to repaint with.........or is there something in the covenant that says otherwise???? I'm curious to know.
Just give it a little time......the sun will fade the strong color very quickly ;)

That's so true....; words of wisdom. Just give it a little time.
Bright orange would no doubt fade into a soft apricot.
Again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
But purple would fade into lavendar?
Again, we saw a lot of bright blues, purples, greens, reds.....every color of the spectrum.....right next to each other but facing in different directions at Peggy's Cove. I think we were coming down from Halifax.
I have Canadian cousins.........so , live and let live.
We bought a Florida condo once where you weren't even allowed to hang a wreath on your front door at Christmas time.

If this burning question of new paint color restrictions is keeping you awake at night give these folks a call. I think you will find there are no restrictions.

Were they vertical or horizontal? I think the orange gives a nice ZING.
I wish someone would take a quick photo on their I-phone and post it.
I thought that all the homes in The Villages were beautiful as was the landscaping along the highways and biways plus the neighborhoods themselves.........we didn't see anything garish at all, not even in the historic section which was quite nice.
Believe me, we drove to every single village and new construction village to be. So, in a month's time plus 4 days, we did see it all.
That being said, this discussion reminds me of why we came back to Vermont from Florida 18 years ago and also 37 years ago, the first time we lived there.
New Englanders have more freedom to be individuals.
We do not have strict zoning either.......for good and sometimes for ill.
Up here it is more "live and let live"..........it seems to work as everyone respects their neighbors' privacy and right to decorate as they please.
Like anything else in life, there are pros and cons to my above statement.
You can drive past someone's home down in town and see a zillion hanging baskets that need weeding "hanging from their front porch" and even "colorful homes" that stick out like a sore thumb....or multiple parked work trucks, motorcycles, etc.
IT'S AN IMPERFECT WORLD. But, that said, I would assume these homes are as much the homeowner's castle as those that are perfectly decorated and / or "architecturally perfect" inside and out.
It's not the house that makes a "home" but the people within......so to be charitable I would say, we all have the right to decorate in which ever manner it would make us joyful.
From what I've read the past year or so, it even seems like for some Villagers, it is their very first home..........quite a different experience than those of us who have bought and sold a half dozen homes in our long lifetime of marriage.
Those of you who have had children and grandchildren.......have you ever noticed that when kids draw homes / houses, they always make them bright colors???? That is pure joy. They haven't learned yet about the rules and regulations.

If the owner does not have a problem with the color, what possible could the neighbors be troubled with, after all,we all have different tastes.

There are no rules that govern the color or even the heights of homes. ARC is a toothless tiger with very minimal authority. A good example is a britht deep blue home on the side street at the Tierra Del Sol restaurant.

Ah no my fine friend. You can choose the color and other things but try to build something outside the setback lines or put a herd of flamingo in the yard. They wil fine your fanny.

Well, buddy, I guess you didn't major in Economics. People paid $250K plus, in fact, a lot plus and there is some expectation that there will be an aesthetic balance in a neighborhood such as the ones in which we live. What is particularly galling is I am aware of a case not too far away in another Village where a homeowner was in the process of selling their home so they could upgrade when another homeowner painted his house a ridiculous color and the sale was scratched..to this day. This occurred over two years ago. How do you think the feelings are on that street? My take is if you want to do your house in bright colors outside the harmony of your neighborhood then move to Curacao or Vermont. I've said what I have to say so enjoy. You don't like that? I don't care! See around the Square..I'll be in a bright colored shirt and then I will go home to my appropriately colored home which I love.

Even though I said earlier, "beige is boring", I agree about the dreaded possibility of someone making it impossible for a neighbor to sell their home because of some new garish paint color.
We've seen this happen in other communities and when the neighbor gives all the rest of the neighborhood the finger by painting with a garish, oddball color, there's war in the camp. It is NOT worth it.
I thought I read somewhere that if a homeowner here in TV wanted to do a paint color that's already not in use in the neighborhood, the person about to paint had to get a consensus from the rest of the neighbors. But when I read the ARC page, there wasn't anything about paint colors.
Definition of GARISH
a : excessively or disturbingly vivid <garish colors> <garish imagery>
b : offensively or distressingly bright : glaring
3 : tastelessly showy : flashy
