Will it become a real paper with this change?

Have you seen what has been happening to "real" papers these days? They have become so thin that they aren't worth reading. I'm happy with the Sun just the way it is - cheap, lots of local interest and with a subscriber base large enough to incent advertisers to keep us aware of their services and provide the occasional coupon. I'll get my "real" news from the internet like everyone else.

You are on target NJblue. We dropped our local paper. All it had was "OLD" news. Breaking news is on the local television stations and they also send an email to inform of immediate breaking news along with weather statements. In depth articles are on the Internet, but then who needs in-depth anymore?

From a wannabee - I enjoy reading the Daily Sun while I'm visiting. I get to know what is going on in TV. Enjoy the stories about what the residents are doing -- clubs, volunteering, etc. I mostly skim the harder news stories as the news is already 12 hrs. old by the time it hits the newspapers.

I agree with nj blue...the papers have shrunk in page size along with the print. The cross word puzzle squares are so small i cant fit the letter in the box.

I wonder who the papers are kidding....no way can they stay afloat cutting bck the way they have/ Fortunately there is a large advertising base here in TV......I guess that is why we can read "The Village Sun". I just wish they would change their editorial policies to provide a more balanced objective reading ...this would include everything from the news covered, politics, and editorial page. readers are not dumb...they can make their own mind up.

Oh and leave the crossword puzzle/Jumble/games in BIG print.

I find it hard to beleive the Morse family would sell the Sun. It is primarily a marketing tool and a tool for promoting the Villages and Villagers. If they sell it they would have to pay the new owner all the money back and then some in advertising costs. Besides the fact they don't need the money and it offers them a terrific forum to promote their businesses and point of view.

All kidding aside, it seems like the Morses are selling off a lot of things. Hope this isn't a portent of things to come when the build out is done. The one thing that I always would ensure that TV has good amenities, etc. was the fact that the Morses would still have their thumbs in many pies, especially around the squares. That won't be the case if everything is sold off. Sure hope all of this selling is simply a diversification to subsidiaries and not a sell off to get rid of properties.

BTW, WVLG Radio was sold last year to the "next generation" Morses. (The children of Jennifer, Tracy and Mark Morse.)

It's "located" in Wildwood, FL. at less than 1000 watts. The station was changed from WHOF to WVLG in 2000 when The Villages bought it. Who remembers that?

if it is factual that Phil M is buying it there are a couple of things to keep in mind. He is the current publisher and knows the operation and it's profitability....hence it must be a good deal and a raise in pay I bet.

He is joined at the hip with the Morse family, always has been...I do not know if he is family or married into it or not....but after the sale they will remain joined at the hip.

I thought for sure there was going to be a surprise like we the residents will be buying it through the CCCD or VCCCD ot the what ever combination of C's 'n D's and other letters. That it will be a cash generator to the fund and hence there will never ever be a raise in amenity fees and maybe a possible reduction depending on profits returned. If you buy this premise, I got two more for ya'.

Does The Shadow know?

The Shadow smells a rat.

Real estate for sale signs have been used from the beginning to sell houses. In a year period not long ago the TV sales office was selling more that 3 pre-owned homes a day 7 days a week.

Another tool used was The Sun, both tools for selling house discarded in the same month assuming it is true. Gary M. is a business wizard and a business wizard doesn’t discard the best tools in the tool box.

Theory, they know bad news is coming from the IRS soon which would result in people on the trolley seeing a depressing amount of homes for sale as current residents exit. The trolley riders will see the for sale signs as a red flag. The solution, conceal pre-owned listings, signs and printed and concentrate on new home sales to build out.

I'm happy with the Sun just the way it is - cheap, lots of local interest and with a subscriber base large enough to incent advertisers to keep us aware of their services and provide the occasional coupon. I'll get my "real" news from the internet like everyone else.

The Morse clan are definitely selling off assets quickly and quietly. Today was the last day of operation for The Villages Taxi, which they have owned and operated forever. Another alarming sign is their lack of interest in building any commercial space. It's been five years since the newest Publix opened, before that there was one opening every year. Who knows? This could all be speculation.

From a wannabee - I enjoy reading the Daily Sun while I'm visiting. I get to know what is going on in TV. Enjoy the stories about what the residents are doing -- clubs, volunteering, etc. I mostly skim the harder news stories as the news is already 12 hrs. old by the time it hits the newspapers.

that's the only reason we get it, to find out the goings on around the villages, as a news organ it is a worthless POS!

Well, yeah ... that's what a newspaper does ... And The Daily Sun is an outstanding paper for it's market ... I will also point out it is OPTIONAL.

I hope any new owners continue the tradition of excellence.

It is "The Happy Paper" not a POS! If you want real news buy the Orlando Sentinel,(news will be 12-20hrs late) watch TV or the internet. At about $55/year what would you expect? Take it for what it is.:duck:

Nobody's forced to buy the Daily Sun.

People choose to buy it to know what's going on in THIS community, not the crime infested ones we left.

We're not waiting breathlessly to find out how many arsons, murders, child rapes and abductions occurred last night in Detroit.

Here's a novel idea: Google "newspapers in the USA". It will yield 218,000,000 results in 0.22 seconds.

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, is the truth" Sherlock Holmes.

I have avoided posting on this thread because I don't really care who owns the Daily Sun or if a change of ownership will change the paper's content.

I am interested in what is going on in the background because the Developer is quite a good "illusionist". I suspect that the ownership of the Daily Sun is only important because of the allegations by the IRS that the Developer has total control of The Villages. The Developer while giving the impression that he is relinquishing control always finds a way or a person he can utilize to front his inititatives. For instance he places on the Boards people who have workd for him in the past. Do a history check and see how many past VHA presidents hold such positions. He also controls the county via Sumter One. Why do you think he fought so hard not to have it repealed. There are other examples but most villagers could care less. I feel certain that if there is an effective change in the Daily Sun's ownership it is a) because of the IRS Audit and b) that said change in ownership will be nominal only.

Why do so many people complain about the Daily Sun. This is still a free country and you have every right to subscribe to any other newspaper. There are plenty of them to get your fill of doom and gloom. I find it refreshing to have a paper that is a little more upbeat and enjoyable to read. No one is forcing you to take it. FWIW, on page A2 of today's (June 21) paper it still shows the publisher is "The Villages of Lake/Sumter Inc" and not Phil Markward.

When they change that tag line or make the announcement, I'll consider it official.

As many others have speculated, I doubt this will change the tone or content of the paper which serves its purpose as a community paper. Hey, I can go through it in about 20 minutes each morning to know what's going on in our hometown.
