Just an FYI:
Last evening around 7:15, as we were leaving Mockingbird Lane, we saw a raccoon run between two houses and go up a tree. It was light out and my understanding from a prior experience is that if a raccoon is out in daylight, he is not well, and a good chance rabid. I spoke to the gate keeper at Sanibel entrance and there was a community watch person. I don't know if they called animal control - presumably they did...but if you are in that area with a dog or out walking on the golf course, you might keep your eyes open.

Not likely, according to several sources:
Wildlife in Crisis Guidelines - Rabies - Don't Panic (http://www.wildlifeincrisis.org/guidelines/rabies.htm)
If I see a raccoon out during the day, does it have rabies? Active during the daytime. (http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/blog/raccoon-day-rabies.html)
Raccoon biology and information Procyonis lotor (http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.net/raccoons.php) See Myth #5
Up here in Ahia, we live in a rural area - lots of trees, crop and livestock fields.....and animal life. Coons seem to be out and about around here all the time. Though they're primarily out at night, it's not at all unusual that we see them during the day time.

Thanks bill . Last year , we had one wobbling around in our yArd and animal control came and said if they are out during the day you need to be suspect. Maybe the combination of looking drunk and daylight was the prob. Thanks for the links .

We live in a small town outside of Seattle. I have seen multiple racoons walking down the street mid day. Every year they are born in our shrubbery and I know it is fall when I look up and there are three babies and a mama staring at me. It often means they are hungry. Sometimes it means they are sick but I always notify the parents whose kids are at the bus stop that racoons are walking around. One night at 3 am we thought we had burglars and my husband got up (I had the phone just in case) and there were two raccoons that came in through the dog door and were having a 3 am snack of dog food. That was a little dangerous....He chased them out with a broom. I saw a whole new side of my CPA husband! He was so brave!

be very careful if you leave your dog, out door in your yard. Also be careful about your doggy doors..had a neighbor who had a racoon come into her home thru one of those doors....
