Hi Villagers,

I am a TV wannabe. I was just wondering - what is it like living there yearround, i.e. what is it like in the summer?

Thank you.

I visited last July/August just to see for myself and I tell you it wasn't a whole lot warmer here than in Ohio before I left. You can feel the sun is more intense if you are sitting out in it but you can always cover-up or find shade. I truly believe that the longer I live here the more used to the heat I will become but it is entirely tolerable now.

BTW, I met a fellow from Georgia when I was here in January and he swears it's cooler here than in Georgia in the summer. He also mentioned that there seems to always be a wind blowing here. I am from the NE Ohio area where we get lake effect snow and I am so glad to finally be here, permanently.

Best of luck with your decision.

Well so far its been cooler than MD and the Mid-Atlantic....of course lately it's also been wetter.....so far been here for 8 months and nothing to complain about...even this current rain. Just gives me time to catch up on my reading!

Yesterday in Kansas City area it was 101, Wednesday is forecast for 102 and Thursday 103, all with relative humidity 75 to 80%. Just looked on weather channel and TV is forecast to be in the 80s all week, albeit with chance of showers most days.

It was 100 in Joplin, Mo at 7:30 this evening. I spent the entire summer in TV in 2010 and 2011 and it was NEVER 100 and even when it was in the 90s, taking the golf cart was doable. Nothing was doable outside in Joplin today.

One of the biggest differences from many places up north is the duration of the heat. Whereas up north the heat waves come and go and typically don't start until mid June and are typically done with by the end of August, down here, the heat starts by the end of May and pretty much stays that way through September and mid October. That being said, I found that you do get acclimated to the heat ... but you do look forward to the days in October that "only" get to 89.

Another Georgian who pretty much agrees with that assessment. Average temperature year-round and average temperature in summer are higher in TV that ATL but the summer temperature range is about the same and the breeze in TV makes many a summer day more pleasant.

Most of my neighbors in the ATL burbs are northerners. Sometimes, the first couple of years they don't like the summers and by the third or forth year, they say you couldn't pay them to go back up north to live.

I lived in the panhandle (pensacola) for three years and south Florida for seven years. The summers were hot, but I LOVED IT!!!!

Other than the weather there are no problems getting a tee time at any time, $6 twilight golf on the big courses, go out to eat at any time, get a seat in the squares withiut having to save them hours before, neat light shows with the thunderstorms, quiet, uncrowded muli-modal paths, less traffic on the streets, lots of energy from the visiting grand kids, friendlier home town all around 'cos if you are here you ARE a FROG!

Summertime and the livin' is easy.....

Hi Villagers,

Veronica -- I am also a wannabee. I have visited TV during the summer for the past 3 years -- just finished renting in TV on 6/17. I wanted to experience what the weather is like in TV during the summer as if/when I do move to TV, it will have to be as a frog. I just paced myself and did my walking for exercise before 9:00 a.m. I live in suburban Chicago, and for 3 days earlier this month when I was in TV it was warmer in Chicago than it was in TV. And this Thursday, it is supposed to be close to 100 in Chicago.

If you can rent in TV for a week or two or a month during the summer, I would recommend it. It is pretty easy to find reasonable rental rates during the summer; even weekly rental rates are available in the summer. Good luck!

Having moved here from Long Island almost 3 years ago I think the humidity is less. As for the heat it's here for a longer period of time then it was up north. That being said I love it. I bike early in the morning, hit the pool in the afternoon or a movie or happy hours. I wouldn't trade this for anything. There is a saying " it may get hot but I don't have to shovel it". I don't think you'll regret the summer heat or the warmer winters.

I am just a first time summer Florida resident, and we still have many months of hot weather to come, but I like it so far. Imagine having TV mostly to yourself. It is so peaceful here without the crowds.

We awake early to get our walk in before breakfast. A 15 minute cart ride with the windshield down cools us off quickly. Then it is time for a shower and breakfast with the Daily Sun. Sometimes we stay in the A/C, and sometimes we go back out for golf, or for a swim. Evenings are lovely. Sunsets are fantastic. Market Square is relaxed and uncrowded. Restaurant specials for drinks and meals are very attractive. We like to go for a cart ride at dusk and marvel at the complex cloud patterns and colors in the sky.

Gatorade, shade, and a breeze are good bets for keeping from getting overheated.

Don't forget to wear a wide brimmed hat and strong sunscreen!

Being from Maine we are used to harsh weather conditions for several months of the year. In Maine it was cold and snow. In Florida it is heat and humidity.
At least here you can go outside without layer upon layer of clothing and big heavy boots.

Veronica:

I spent some 40-45 summers in St. Louis. Widely known for its heat and humidity - the British government once paid its St. Louis-based consulate staff tropical pay - I found when I came to TV that:

1] The high temperatures here usually last for a longer period, but

2] The evening humidity is lots less even before the sun goes down.

So, after a little period of adjustment, it is really much more comfortable here than it was up north!

And, in all my seven years in TV, I've only seen a couple/three 100F days, whereas there were often a half-dozen or more each year, there.

I graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1968, it was built in 1923 and the building never had air conditioning. We never thought about why our school didn't have a/c. In fact my elementary school and my junior high didn't have air conditioning either.

When I flew out of Tampa Int'l in 1970 on my way to Korea the waiting room was park benches outside with a chain link fence separating passengers from the ramp. When it came time to board they opened a gate and we walked onto the ramp and up portable stairs.

We didn't have air conditioning in my home until I was in the 9th grade when my dad had a window unit installed in the living room. We did have a whole house fan in the hallway ceiling that kept it fairly cool at night.

Yesterday I was in a doctors office and the receptionist said her electric had been out all night and she had very little sleep. She said she had been up all night running out to her car so she could run her car air conditioner.

It's all what you're use to. Before moving here a year ago I lived the last 22 years in Baltimore and I found it much hotter there, especially in July and August.

I am a wannabee who has visited TV in the summer months twice. I personally tolerated the heat well. In New York/CT, the temperatures can go to 100 with 95% humidity which I found to be unbearable.

A friend of mine always says, "why do you want to go to FL? It's so hot in the summer. I repond with, "what's the differecnces if you have to stay in A/C in the summer or stay indoors in the winter to keep from freezing?"

I can't wait until the day I am permanetly in TV!!!!!

I look forward to living in TV no matter the temps! Today driving home from work in Houston the temperature on my car read 113 degrees. And yes - we have high humidity almost always. I'm envious of you Frogs dealing with the heat or the rain. Don't want to wish my life away, but I'm really anxious for December to get here!
