Recent rainfall and sinkhole activity in The Villages is of course terrible for those affected by it, but does all that rainfall increase your peace of mind that your property is less likely to be affected in the future by a sinkhole now that it has been tested with all that rainfall?

I'm no sinkhole guru, but I would think that if your property had the potential to have a sinkhole, that there's a good chance that it would have surfaced with the storms we just had. I'm interested in hearing what your thoughts are about this?

A valid question. But I don't feel any better or any worse. There is a lot of activity under the ground and you can never tell if these rains might have made a different underground tunnel or waterway that is branching off in a different direction.

No, the water underground is eating away the limestone ceilings all the time from what I read.

Depends how thick that ceiling is I suppose.

No, erosion takes time. A new underground fissure can open up anytime there is a lot of force on it.

I'm a Nuc so you'll have to bear with me here. Without going into what I do or where I am, I have a team of Civil and Geo Tech Engineers who gave me this opinion. With the type of structure we have in central Florida, a rapid rise or fall in the water table will expose weaknesses in the sub structure. Thus the holes. I couldn't understand the difference between this liquification and how they described what they thought was going on at the bottom of the pond that drained. It's something different. I didn't ask but I think they would agree with skyguy79 about how our property has been tested and survived. I feel sorry for the people who sustained damage.

I know that our home in Belvedere Village is fine for now. Our neighbours and our Homewatch Company tell us that all is OK. But we back on the Churchill Greens Golf Course with ponds, so I am worried. There seems to be a lot of sinkhole activity in surrounding areas. I feel that sink holes can happen anytime, anywhere.

I'm just wondering .... for years after we purchased in 2007, I heard absolutely nothing on the subject of sink holes. And now, it seems to be a frequent occurence. And not just with the recent rains.

The two homes are supposedly next to one another on the 2800 section of Manor Downs. It looks like they border a pond or ponds on Churchill Greens.

Bare, your house is not on Churchill Greens, your old house was. I am pretty sure you are now on Belmont. Manor Downs is about 1/4 mile west of the old house. Sandy & Geno told me no problem in the hood where we are so far.

I would make sure I had sinkhole coverage and pray that it won't happen to me.

Our friends lost their dream house to a sink hole in TV. So they rescued what they could, sold it as is and bought another home in TV. That was good enough for us. We are building in Fernandina unit 206.

Seems from reading the threads here, that sink holes are mostly a problem around the ponds. Is that the the case? I assume they can happen anywhere, but most of the ones I read about appear to be near water! :22yikes:

It does seem that ponds cause a lot of the problems. But perhaps it is the water acquifiers and not ponds. I think that the sink hole, or castrophobic ground movement, in Sunset Pointe was in the front yard. We very much enjoy backing on a pond, watching the birds, and having the frogs sing us to sleep at night. I think that developing a sink hole is probably as likely as losing your home to a tornado or to a lightening fire. Acts of God. :pray:

Are there no perils in NYC?
Look at the threads, those that say you can get insurance. PM that person and get a phone number of the agency and give them a call. Then you will get the straight answer. I would even call two or three.

NY has its share of perils but I'm talking about a peril in TV that before last weekend was not so common. Not having a way to mitigate it is scary.
Our desire to move to TV is very strong talking and dreaming about TV every day. We want our move to go as smooth as possible and our new home to be protected against all that can go wrong. Doesn't everybody??
I have already contacted our sales agent and asked him to provide us with some insurance agents. Lets see what they say.

they have to disclose it the law, and if they don't when an insurance company does a quote it comes up then

Sink holes are caused by several things. Disturbing the top layer of soil (digging ponds) is a strong contributor. Drough, flooding and natural causes also come into play. Lots of questions answered on this website:

Then all the sinkholes would have been found in prior storms. Seems that they are a risk of living in this part of Florida. I would stay away from the ponds (just a guess no facts) if I was building. I would also get sinkhole insurance that would pay the cost of repairing the small ones that pop up without damaging the home. Also make sure it will repair your home if it was damaged by a sinkhole but was still habitable.

I have a lot on hold in Gilchrist on a golf course, but not particularly close to a pond. Well, I am not entirely certain of that as I have never seen the lot! I know a pond is nearby, but not exactly sure where. Anyways, I had some reservations about everything after hearing all the sinkhole news. I feel SO terrible for those who are adversely affected. But in the grand scheme of things we can all have something catastrophic happen in our neighborhoods, no matter where we may live. I got through Hurricane Wilma with under 10,000 in damages, survived a tornado in Tampa, and a microburst in the Chicago suburbs. None of us have any guarantees. I am excited to live in TV, and this will not change my mind. However, I will definitely be looking to obtain sinkhole coverage!

Florida law requires the seller and any adjacent property to be sold must disclose this type of problem...
